Your memories of the sheffield "tigers" speedway
Freebooter replied to mh01's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
On the subject of "before my time" I have just remebered that my parents went to Owlerton in the very early days. One of the names they mentioned that I have not seen in the forum was Smokey Stratton, there were some more, I may remember and will post. -

I remember Guy Allott and probably once, but not now, knew how he was related to Tommy Allott. The others were before my time I think. -

Forgot to mention, I remember the helicopter ride, right from when it was new I had to have a go, loved it. I remember that over a period of time the rotor blades at the back stopped and eventually the main one failed and I think were removed, I often wondered how it still went up and down with no blades. Ah simple soul !! -

I had two main era's of Redgates, first as a young child around the mid / late 50's I had a train set and liked to visit their layout. As I got a little older and the set developed into a layout. I well remember the brown overalled man who looked after the layout and carried out repairs. As I got a little older, Regates was an important call when my pal and I made our regular Saturday trip into Sheffield. We were keen on Meccano at that time and later when we had started working, Scalextric, we did start working at a young age ! -

Oh yes! I remember that, I also seem to remember a quite large and sophisticated racing car, possibly battery powered? -

I remember the Fitzallan Square toy shop but didn't think it was Redgates. Think I will side with the Bottom of Eccleshall Road Idea. -
I remember seeing a band at one of the "Eastwood" clubs, (could never remember which was which) And the lead Singer / Guitarist did the "plectrum tricks" I recall they were very good. I recall he sounded a bit Rod Stewart, nowt wrong wi' that though!! Wernt impressed with the Plectrum tossing ! Fancy finding out who he was after all this time!

I was a regular at Owlerton from around 1960 onwards and have many fond but fading memories. I am sure I have Sandor Levai' s autograph on a programme, I have most of them under the desk ready to be put on ebay - eventually ! I think I started going very shortly after Guy Allott's accident. I know this thread may be a little cold now but I will keep putting a bit on if there is any interest. Incidentally, My Parents used to go when the track was literally cinders, they remembered riders including Smokey Stratton and Frank Varey as a rider, there were others but memory fade has just pipped this one!
