  1. Did you live at the other side of me with these neighbours in the middle, they drove me nuts, as I worked shifts at the time. The council were rubbish and didn't want to know neither did the police so I went round and had a polite word (not the first time but I had 8 years of them). Told him I was close to breaking point with him, had a fully diary over two years and suggested they moved house sooner rather than later... and they did! His missus was such a snob too well she thought she was. There's only so much of the Stones Roses blasting out at 4am I can take bearing in mind its all terraced houses where we are. At the end of the day there are some inconsiderate people out there...
  2. As mentioned above the MOT centre on Broadfield Road, I've used them for the past 14 years and wouldn't take my car anywhere else. They are fair and if your car fails on something its for a reason not either covered up and ignored or they don't get you to spend £250 on a repair that really isn't necessary (yes I've been to those garages in the past too). Personally I can't fault them, Rob and Dave who run the MOT section of the business are really clued up guys. There is a mechanic there who took over from Barry Mason (he moved into the old diary a little further up the road) he is called Reg and will repair cars either through the MOT or independently and its separate to the MOT side of things and rents the space. I think they charged £54 which is the actual cost of an MOT in the UK rather than these garges who charge £20-30 and will do anything to find a fault on your vehicle and charge you for it too whether or not its needed. Hope this is helpful
  3. I went to Billy Boy Tyres last year with a puncture and he point blank refused to repair it, bearing in mind the tyre was only 6 months old and had hardly worn plus the bloke I spoke to was blatently rude with it thinking "oh I'll get the guy to spend £30 quid on a new tyre" therefore in my opinion and others on this thread maybe it was the attitude that actually closed him down rather than George Osborne. I went straight round to Kwik fit and they repaired it on the spot and only charged me £9 or thereabouts for the repair no quibble and the best part was it wasn't outside the repairable bit! Never had a problem with it since.... I use a mechanic who advertises on the Forum - Barry Mason for repairs and tyres, spot on service, friendly and thoroughly recommended, really knows his stuff and reasonably priced too especially in todays market
  4. This I do agree with, I did opt for a larger hard drive even though I would probably only use a fraction of it, good point to future proof as programmes do indeed get larger with each new release. This pc does everything I need it for, I'm not an avid gamer so don't need higher end specs. The i3 processor has an accelerator built in so it will push the processor should I need it for my complex programmes that I use. My old pc had a 40GB hard drive and I only ever used about half of it as I have an external hard drive that I use as backup and for storing additional work. Personally I don't know how to build or indeed configure a system and I really wouldn't know where to begin though I can't fault you for doing this yourself. Incidentally happy birthday!
  5. It was the first thing I did after setting up the pc, Windows asked me for a password which I duly entered before it would allow me to proceed any further. I then installed the latest version of Norton, followed by MS Office 2010 professional Plus (all genuine software) plus a few other software packages that I use all of which are genuine. I don't do illegal copies. I noticed tonight that the screensaver comes on for a fraction of a second and if it does thats when I have to re-enter the password again, a real bum pain! I used to use W XP OS and Office and this was easy to configure and set up however W7 is completely different in that even the standard buttons are now in completely different locations and its these locations I'm have issues with as I simply wish to either extend the standing time before the password needs re-entering or disabling it entirely. Where you would think the configuration buttons/settings are they aren't... very confusing With thanks
  6. I purchased my last pc and my lastest pc from PC World and I've always been impressed as they have never tried to sell me something that I would never use. Though I know that they can be a bit pushy if they think you don't know what you're looking at. Incidentally I don't work for them either however I do understand where you are coming from with your enquiry. If you don't require a 2TB hard drive then why buy a PC with one in it, same goes for the processor, RAM and graphics card etc... there are countless laptops in pc world and certainly more choice than the options I had with choosing a desktop model of which there were 11 models. Another option would be DELL, they have end of line laptops at very reasonable prices again however it would depend on the specifications that you would require and what you would use it for. If its for general work, surfing the internet you don't need an i7 GTi model. I use a DELL at work and can't fault it, quite basic too. John Lewis are very good too if you don't wish to shop online and their warranty is spot on, 2 years I think it is, no quibble. Personally I would've preferred to use John Lewis however the PC's were all too higher end specs which I really don't require. with regards
  7. Hi all, Its the Windows password, nothing to do with screensavers. If I leave the pc alone any longer than 12 seconds I have to enter the password to access the computer again which when this is done 20-30 times a day is very frustrating to say the least. I will have a look in the accounts section and see if I can disable it from there, otherwise I may need further advice. PC World were as usual not remotely helpful unless I registered for a £7 a month assistance package.... whatever happened to customer service? With thanks
  8. Opera is very good - the search engine that is. I was using IE6 until last year when I switched to Firefox as IE kept locking up. The reason I didn't upgrade was my PC at the time didn't like IE7 and I had confliction issues and didn't have the specs for IE8 so I was quite happy surfing around on Firefox 4 as an alternative. On my new machine its all go for IE9 and Firefox 10.0.1 and the latter is awesome, fast as hell...
  9. Hello, I have recently purchased a new computer with Windows 7 on it and I have an annoying problem with it. When first switched on it asked for a "Password" and a clue to it which is fine however if the computer is left alone for anytime longer than 12 seconds if I try to use it again I have reinput this password in order to use the pc and this is a real pain in the bum to do this all the time. I am a regular user of a computer however I am completely new to Windows 7 which to say is somewhat different to the previous operating systems. Can anyone inform me how to either disable this function or prevent this from occurring every 12 seconds and to extend it to say 10 minutes. The help menu is completely unhelpful! aaargh! Thank you
  10. Out of interest why don't you take down his registration number and post it on the forum, is this allowed? You can then report him to the Police (but then again he may be a copper) and get some video footage as well. That said there are some really scary cyclists out there weaving all over the roads and in and out of traffic, no lights on when its dark, cycling through RED traffic lights - yes you know who you are! that said there are both good and bad car users, cyclists etc... and don't get me started on motorcyclists
  11. The best... Stainless steel (the process of), Def leppard, Made in Sheffield Cuttlery (Not like Viners cuttlery which is made in Sheffield Taiwan and shipped across), Sheffield Steelers ice hockey and the worst... 2 very embarrassing so called football teams, one or both of which may actually make it up to the next division next season... wow 5th largest city with two rubbish football teams enough said
  12. I once used a 'compatable' cartridge only to find it made me invest in a new print head - ouch! You get what you pay for.. the ink also tends to be quite watery too in the cheaper ones I tend to buy my original/genuine cartidges from ebay these days as they are far cheaper than the cost retail plus if you do ensure that you check with the seller the age of them as inkjets dry up very quickly if left too long
  13. Concerning the nightlife Cairo Jacs closed down (yes I'm that old) The council have never invested in the city, be it Labour, Lib Dems The council have begun shipping out the undesirables to that place called Rotherham as of around 2 years ago There is only one University in the City, the other one is a pretend one formally known as a Polytechnic Lots of countryside and a lot more on the doorstep than other city's
  14. There's no company better in Sheffield than John Lewis, remember you get what you pay for plus John Lewis will price match and give you a far better guarantee than Argos, Currys etc.. People assume they are expensive however they will price match just so long as the other item isn't in the sale or reconditioned.
  15. I've just taken some advice from a friend and bought a Samsung ML1860 from PC World/Currys, its a laserjet which is far better than the inkjet ones. As for cost £39.99 with a 3/4 full toner which will do around 1,200 black sheets. This is only a monochrome printer therefore if you require colour you will have to pay more. It has a USB A - USB B wired connection which are £19.99 in Curry's or just £2.99 with free postage on ebay. Personally I can't fault it plus its far quieter than my old printer ever was and a lot more compact too. As far as printers go, it works out cheaper to buyer the unit and then discard it once its run out of ink as the toners are quite expensive (£64.99 for a full one) however its good for what I use it for and the quality is spot on. I hope this is useful?
  16. I've always had a phobia about visiting the dentist too and go about every 3 months just for a checkup to ensure (hopefully) I don't need any work doing. My dentist is Polish and she is fantastic, very caring attitude and explains things properly. The practice is on Victor Street at Hillsborough though I don't know if they are taking new patients at present especially as she is on maternity leave at present. The replacement male dentist is equally good and is very thorough. I've had 4 dentists, 2 English, 1 Scottish and my current dentist who is Polish and she is by far the best and most competent dentist I've ever been to but then again in Poland it takes at least 7 years to qualify and not 5 like it is over here. The 2 English dentists I had I wouldn't recommend them to anyone as they made a right mess between them!
  17. Scott's pantry is good on Glossop Road though the prices have really gone up over the past year. Used to use them quite a bit when I worked up that way be it for sarni's, salads or an occasional bacon and egg hottie. Good choice and friendly staff too
  18. My enquiry in regards to this is WHY isn't there one pension scheme for all, you get back what you pay in and to turn a phrase simples! For some reason the Unions and University do not want to discuss this... Though the University maybe the "Time's University of the year" they have in effect messed around their lowest paid staff (I'm being polite here). This incidentally affects grades 1 - 5 who are all on the USPS (University of Sheffield Pension Scheme) non academic scheme. This may come back to haunt them, plus taking an 8 year payment break whilst the lowest paid staff are still paying into the scheme belies belief. This is now why they cannot afford to keep this scheme going. Though they have only just realised over the past couple of years that people are in fact living longer... its like "hello where have you been"? (these are academics) All the USS scheme members are safe especially those higher up the tree (grades 6 and above). Manxcat made an excellent comment on this, mess your staff around and they will leave and shoot yourselves in the foot for failing to recruit and retain good staff. I've seen it first hand elsewhere... time will tell!
  19. Dances with Wolves theme tune comes to mind and also the Highlander film with music from Queen, can't get much more opposite than that, each to their own!
  20. Ah we have a Panasonic DVD recorder and we have exactly the same issue plus the added bonus of when switching the thing on it takes around 10-15 minutes to actually start the DVD in order to play one. I sought some advice on this and was informed that it would cost more to repair than it was worth so yesterday went out and bought a standard DVD player with no frills - and it works great, though just can't record any longer
  21. The Nigerian ones are the best, the spellings are awful and they all start with your uncle who has just left you $35 million dollars in his bank account etc.... Delete and don't respond regardless!
  22. Thank you, been meaning to join for a while but never quite got round to it until last night. Thanks for the link
  23. Well I have been using McAfee perfectly for the past 6 years (all purchased through ebay on the cheap and genuine issues) until the 2011 issue which is diabolical and completely user-unfriendly. It has a mind of its own and as for customer support don't get me started on that one... its in India, explain the problem and 2 hours later they are still non the wiser... I've learnt my lesson, disabled the McAfee, uninstall it and go for a freebie like AVG or something similar. I have since found out you only need the branded ones if you download music or DVD's or dodgy stuff, which since I don't and use it for mainly ebay then the free products out there are just as good if not better and offer better value for money as they are free!
  24. Hello, I am looking to purchase a new computer which will come with Windows 7 as opposed to Windows XP that I currently run on my current PC. I have been informed by the staff at PC World that my XP Office package may not run on the new Windows 7 platform. Can anyone offer some advice in this regard please or are they just trying to sucker me into paying an additional amount just for the sake of it. Many thanks:help:
