  1. hi does anyone know of any autism friendly dentists in the sheffield area. i have a 15yr old who has taken to thumping himself in the face and over the weekend he has wacked himself in the mouth so hard that he has broken a tooth. Visits to the dentist are a nightmare, not only can he not bear anyone or anything near to or touching his head he also has a fear of strangers and being in an environment that he is unfarmiliar with. infact any dental work he needs is usually carried out under general anaesthetic at the hospital.this proccess usually takes weeks to organise but we need to see someone now. thanks for reading this, julie x
  2. i have suffered from coldsores for more years than i care to remember. i have found that the thing that works best for me is to hold an ice cube on your sore for as long as you can stand it, do this several times a day. This works a treat for me, they are usually gone within 2 days. julie x
  3. i also live in s26 (kiveton park) but we are under rotherham council and have the worksop dialing code for our telephones and to complicate things further we're only just in yorkshire!
  4. i have just registered , awaiting approval. lets hope it proves to be a popular forum.
  5. well done maryjane i'm so happy for you julie x
  6. i must admit i am incilned to agree with fingers, could you have been misdiagnosed.it's all to easy for busy gp's to write a prescription for some happy pills.it worries me that you say you have been on anti depressents for years, i would be even more worried if you have been on the same meds for years on end without regular reviews.maybe your meds aren't working as well as they use to , if your on the same stuff and same dosage maybe your body has got so use to it it doesn't have the desired effect anymore. i would go and see your gp love explain how you feel, insist on getting some kind of assesment or counciling and if you don't get any joy from that gp insist on seeing another one. good luck, julie x
  7. hi jason, a little bit of info about melatonin for you. melatonin is not a medication as such it is a natural hormone that the body produces that basically tells you when its time to be thinking about winding down at the end of the day and going to sleep. melatonin can be bought over the counter in most countries but not the uk. it is also used to combat jet lag. we use meltonin for our autistic son who pre melatonin slept on average 2 hours a night. at one point gp's would not prescribe it,now some do some don't. we get ours via a repeat prescription from rotherham hospital pharmacy.it's a great alternative to sleeping pills as it doesn't give you that groggy headache that sleeping pills tend to when you wake up. i would seriously ask your gp if you could have some. good luck, hope you get it sorted soon. julie xx
  8. hi jason, i was just wondering when was the last time you had your medication reviewed, surely your gp gives you a check up at least once a year. if i was you love i would make an appointment and discuss your sleep probems with your doctor, i would ask them about the possibility of being prescribed melatonin as a sleep aid. i would also ask them if the medication you are on should be changed. nimrod is right try not to worry about not sleeping , the more you get stressed out about it the less likely it is to happen. julie xx
  9. hi everyone, just venting my spleen here! I have a 16yr old with aspergers who has been offered a place at freeman college in sheffield.this is fantastic news it's what he really, really wants to do and for the 1st time in his life he has actually felt possotive about a learning environment. Now for the bad news, the learning skills council have refused to fund his placement so we now have to appeal against their decission. I was wondering if any of you have been in this situation and if you can offer me any tips or advice on how to conduct our appeal, we'll only get one shot at this so i am anxious to get it right. julie xx
  10. why do people always assume that adults with learning difficulties want to do gardening, it does my nut in. my 15 years old special needs son is forced to gardening every week at school and as a result he now refuses to go out into our garden which up until september was one of his only pleasures. rachel, have you tried asking your clients families what they enjoy doing, that might give you some ideas.
  11. yes they're called music in motion. i will send you their phone number later today.
  12. i used the buses last week for the first time in years. out of 10 journeys i only came across one driver with a bit of an attitude problem. the thing that struck me most about the buses though was how filthy they are.don't they employ cleaners anymore?.
  13. to pussy galore, just incase you are giving some concideration as to wether to contact autism partnership i forgot to mention that we got full funding from the lea to cover the costs. We are under rotherham though, we were the 1st family in our area to do aba so i didn't think that there would be much chance but the people involved were very supportive especially the educational psychologist. julie x
  14. ooops i didn't mean to sent that !!! as i was saying we did a 3 year aba programme with our son. we we're with autism partnership who are based in seal beach california. these people were highly recommended by people, organisations, families, profesionals etc. i think aba is more for autistic kids than others. if you look on autism partnerships website and drop an email to either julia peacock or elizabeth thompson i am sure that they would be able to give you some useful advice as to what is available out there. just be careful though there are a lot of horrible people out there who pretend to offer people help and all they really do is take your money and run. julie xxx
