  1. My wife Julia Bennett(nee-spooner ) worked in medical records .The manager was a Mr Scott .She remembers the names of many people who worked there .later she moved to the new hospital building.I used to walk up from my work at Viners to meet her then walk all the way together up to Crooks where we lived
  2. Some confusion has arisen George Spooner was the brother of Joe Spooner. Joe Spooner was the father of Tim. I married the the daughter of George Spooner I believe Tim to have been in his early 30.s when he died. .I cannot however be exact. Tim would have been the last of the Crookes Spooners, unless anyone knows differently. Perhaps some one else has a date. If any one has any further data concerning this local family I would be pleased to hear ldm30
  3. I am glad you remember Tim. He was a good lad.I can remember being his navigator in some rally using that self same MGTD . Charging about in the rain ,snow and ice in that open car in some wilderness or other. Very brave of you to go to Oulton park in a nippy!. Now for the bad bit. Poor Tim died young .I cannot give you a date but I would guess he would have been in his early 30's . He never married. I cannot now recall what the cause was .. Strangely his father died at very nearly the same time .Both were gone in the space of approximately 2 weeks. He had 2 sisters ,Joan and Pamela but I lost touch with them many years ago. The Spooners were a very old Crooks family .I believe if you walk by first farm you can still GS (George Spooner) 17?? . engraved on a wall in the house side. There is also a Spooner wheel in Riverlyn. Thank you for your interest. Mike aka -LDM30 ps; I married George Spooners stunning daughter Julia.
  4. I worked at Vineers for some years. It was amazing just how skillful the people were and what lovely things they made - To watch a fluted silver bowl being made was humbling,as was the creation of a multi armed candle stick -ldm
  5. thank you for your interest.I think that the Spooner road in Broomhill predates George who was born around 1900.I do not know who it was named after .I do however know that a family of Spooners lived there in the 1890s. They were however very humble people as far as I know so it was not named after them. Something of a mystery ?
  6. Perhaps it is not a question of right or wrong.Just maybe it is a question of what can we afford?
  7. Pam was one of the daughters of Joe spooner-thanks for your interst
  8. IRON MONGER .The Spooner who lived on western road was the older brother of George. His name was Joe.Thankyou for your interest
  9. The man who almost built St Antonys road single handed was George Edward Spooner He had al vehicle workshop on Toftwood road in the 1920s. St Antonys road is named after a well that can be found on the allotments .The Spooners were resident in Crooks for hundreds of years .I believe first farm has "G.S" for George Spooner on a gable. There is also a Spooner wheel in Riverlyn. In the 1880 I believe they were carters based in Crookes .I knew George well. A good man.He had a daughter called Julia Lylee.Thank you for your help and interest ldm30-mike
  10. How strange we should share the same experience. My dad fought in Africa. He served from 1939 to 46. Worked as driver for Sheffield Corporation. A simply gentleman I remember with love and pride. I seem to remember a story about an American bomber crashing in Endcliffe Park??. Did it happen???
  11. thanks for the data I used to box there with a lad called Ray Antcliffe He was so much better than I was .He could hit me whenever he liked but he was never where I thought he was.It was a good school and gave many of us a second chance.I still have my 2nd class diploma!-ldm30
  12. thanks -give me a little time to collect some numbers.Kind of you to help ldm30-mike
