  1. Don't know about York, Ousetune, but Doncaster is still party-town on race days.
  2. How about Gremlins? "No matter how much he begs...never, never, feed him after midnight..." But you never see Gizmo wearing a watch do you? And what does he do if he goes to the North Pole?
  3. go to itvplayer homepage and type it in the search box, just worked for me...
  4. Plotholes always seem to occur whenever a film gets chopped to bits by a studio. James Cameron's "Aliens" made far more sense when the Special Edition was released years after the original. The scenes where Ripley discovers her daughter has grown up and died in the 57 years of her absence make more sense of her descent into depression. Plus, the story of how Newt ended up where she was becomes clear with the terrifying scene of her parents' discovery of the alien spaceship.
  5. She's an oxygen thief as it is, please don't give her the oxygen of publicity...it only encourages her.
  6. It was a brilliant series, and I learned a lot from it at the time, about world events and pop music. Some of it is on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WWF6lRIuf4
  7. Cheating, no two ways about it. Also hypocritical, seeing that players look furious if anyone in the crowd so much as clears their throat when the player is about to serve. The screeching players yell out just as they are about to make contact with the ball, and in doing so prevent their opponent from hearing the racket hitting the ball. This makes it much more difficult for the opponent to judge how hard the ball has been hit, whether spin has been applied etc. Cheating.
  8. I remember the head of Channel 4 once saying that they landed the rights to Serie A almost by accident. They enquired to the Italian FA about buying the rights for Paul Gascoigne's debut for Lazio, but were told that this wouldn't be possible, but they could purchase the entire broadcast rights for the league. When C4 asked for a quote, they couldn't believe how cheap it was. Bearing in mind that David Platt and Des Walker were also playing in Italy, they simply couldn't believe their luck. They also calculated that the sudden disappearance of top-flight live football from terrestrial TV would leave a big demand for Sunday afternoon live football. I also remember a few other things from the late 80s about the European Cup. I remember it became a common thing to hear that it was becoming harder to win the UEFA Cup because of the strength in depth, the effect of having the 2nd 3rd 4th placed teams from the top leagues. And also, Berlusconi was initially demanding seeding the first two rounds of the European Cup in order to virtually guarantee a passage to the quarter finals for the big teams. Don't get me wrong, his intentions were certainly not in the interests of football in general.
  9. I can't stand people who middle lane hog, trundle along with nothing in front ofn them on the left. But the motorways are getting busier, and most are three lanes moving at similar speeds in rush hour. Now, on the M25 in it's busiest sections, they have put up signs asking motorists to "maintain constant speed, stay in lane" or something like that. Isn't that the opposite of what today's announcement is demanding?
  10. Sorry JB, but England have been with Nike for years since the yanks bought Umbro in 2007. All that has changed is that Nike have recently sold off the Umbro brand to someone else, hence the change in name on the shirt. Deceptive, eh?
  11. There are currently very strong links between the BNP and a certain loyalist paramilitary group. When the former UVF brigade commander Johnny "Mad Dog" Adair was forced to leave Northern Ireland by his own organisation, he ran straight to his friends in Combat 18 in Bolton. The BNP are intent on destroying the peace process.
  12. I don't mind it too much, but I agree the blue is too dark. I'm just glad that England have a shirt that for once doesn't try to make them look like the '66 team or a public schoolboy's team.
  13. So often I hear people comment that the old European Cup was better than the Champions League, in that it should be just the champions, a straight knock-out etc. I've just read on this forum a comment that the Champions League was "Berlusconi's dream". This is a fair comment, he was one of the big drivers of the Champions league idea, but I think for good reason. In the late 80s there was a desire by UEFA to sell the TV rights to the European Cup on a season-by-season basis, rather than match-by-match. Pay TV was coming, and Berlusconi, as head of a media group, was arguing that the European Cup was no longer an attractive proposition for the TV companies. The 1990 European Cup proved him right. In the 1989/90 European Cup, the first round saw Rangers drawn against Bayern Munich, and were knocked out. Then in the second round, Real Madrid were drawn against AC Milan, and were also knocked out. This was during the ban on English teams, bear in mind. Therefore, there was no British representation after September, and no Spanish representation after October. No way were the TV companies going to pay up front for an entire season without knowing that their teams would be playing. This is what Berlusconi described as "not modern thinking". But unbelievable, the TV companies did agree to pay up from 1992/93 onwards. The carrot was the introduction of the group stage. Having agreed to pay for a season long completion in a lump sum, the TV companies must have been dismayed when they saw the 1991/92 European Cup play out. This was the first season of the group stage, and the last before the TV deal they'd signed was due to start. Germany, the biggest TV audience in Europe, saw their team knocked out before the group stage even began. Still, the TV companies will have had their fingers crossed for 1992/93. ITV had paid a fortune for the rights to show the competition from the group stage onwards, the English were back, everything was set. Then came the draw for the 1st round, Leeds vs Stuttgart. Bye-bye the Germans, another year's deutschmarks down the drain for German TV. 2nd Round Leeds vs Rangers, CSKA Moscow v Barcelona. Bye-bye Leeds, bye-bye Barcelona. ITV were devastated, and were lucky Rangers got through to the group stages, or it would have been a case of "Tonights Coronation Street is at 9.30 while we go live for PSV Eindhoven v IFK Gothenburg." This is why the TV companies, quite rightly, demanded changes to the competition format if they were to be expected to keep paying an absolute fortune for TV rights. They wanted guarantees that their clubs would be involved, leading to more entrants from the top countries etc. So, there may be too many games in the Champions League, but compare this to Liverpool's European Cup campaign of 1977 1st round v Crusaders 2nd round v Trabzonspor Quarter Final v St Ettiene Semi Final v FC Zurich Final v Borussia Moenchengladbach so that's European Champions after 9 games, with no matches at all between October and March. All I'm saying that no TV company is going to pay anything for a season like this, especially as the first round could have been the end of the line for Liverpool had the drawn not been as kind. I believe the Champions League is flawed, but still far better than the old European Cup. If you liked the old format, then all you have to do is imagine it starts every February with a 16 team knockout.
  14. Looking on Google Earth, the ground is an athletics track beside the airport runway, with just one stand. I imagine that any visiting team with a large travelling support will cause the game to be moved to another ground. But where? Don't think Spain will be willing, so I assume that Tangiers, across the water, will be the choice. There's a 45000 all seater new stadium there built for Morocco's World Cup bids. When Gibraltar were denied UEFA membership in 2007, there was a serious suggestion that they might join the African Confederation.
  15. Gibraltar at last have had their application to join UEFA approved after years of trying. They have been confirmed as being in the draw for Euro 2016. Congratulations to the Gibraltar FA, one of the oldest Football Associations in the world. The only stipulation is that Spain and Gibraltar cannot be drawn to play each other.
  16. May I just point out. To name and shame individuals working for the company involved is unfair and uncalled for. They are following policies and guidelines set down by their employers, and could land themselves in trouble by not following them. Thankyou to the employee from KNOWHOW or taking the time to give the company's side of the argument. I'm sure your employer didn't tell you to do it, so the argument that the company is practising a public relations exercise is absolutely ridiculous. Please be aware, for a company to accept a product from a customer, they need to be sure that the supplier is going to give them credit for the return. If the supplier has already said it is not under warranty due to damage, this obviously wont happen.
  17. Spot on. Paul Kaye that is, used to that "Dennis Pennis" red carpet interviewer character.
  18. I still remember him as "Elvis" in Only Fools and Horses - Rodney's assistant at Cassandra's dad's printing firm.
  19. Heat was gripping - the scene where De Niro has to walk away from the love of his life without saying a word is beautiful. But in Righteous Kill they are both far too old to be believable. Pacino had the task of having to rescue his career in the late 80s, where De Niro has stayed at the top of his game throughout his career. So for me, De Niro, for Casino, Goodfellas, The Godfather Part II. But one more Pacino performance to celebrate - Dog Day Afternoon, the empathy he attracts for the thoroughly depressing character is a work of genius.
  20. Reminded me of one of those spoof US newsroom movies from the 80s.
  21. Keys and Gray are brilliant on a morning - some of their features and interviews are superb. Last weeks feature on the new Duncan Edwards biography was particularly excellent. Why on earth anyone listens to BBC 5-live is beyond me. Any station which builds Robbie Savage up to be some kind of retired world superstar has to be treated with contempt. The guy was a barely Championship-standard player who happened to be Welsh, so got a few caps for doing nothing. Oh, and he has a stupid haircut and ridiculously overpriced clothes. As for commentary, I've just watched Dundee v Ross County on BBC Alba in Gaelic. I didn't notice it after a few minutes - shows how much I notice the commentators.
  22. To me, it's just a pointless tournament. Bit like having Oxford v Cambridge boat race on in the middle of the Olympic regatta. I can get into a golfer struggling his way round 72 holes in different weathers, looking over his shoulder at the leaderboard and agonising over ever shot. But each time the Ryder Cup starts, I just get fed up of the hype and the often irrelevant golf being played. When Rory McIlroy came along and made no secret of his disinterest, I thought it was the end for it. But here we are, the papers full of it as though it were the Open.
  23. It's a good way to celebrate their history. Their songs still sound fresh and original, and to see Brian Wilson with them is great. As usual, Jools looked like the cat who got the cream when he sat down to play. The last time they toured was when Carl Wilson was dying of lung cancer, but carried on playing with them right until near the end of his fight. There are some pretty harrowing live videos of that tour on YouTube where he can't stand up and is visibly singing in agony. To see them back is a great tribute to his memory.
  24. One of the funniest men I have ever seen on the big screen. His Dreyfuss character in the Pink Panther films was the work of a comedy genius. Legend.
