  1. Does anyone know about trains to Manchester. The National rail enquiries website says the local stopping service is leaving on time, but when you read the service update on the Northern website it says all trains are cancelled. I've been on hold for half an hour to get through to national rail.
  2. I commute by train every day. I chose to live walking distance to the station so I don't have to rely on bus/trams, allowing me to squeeze every last minute of my day. I've given up buying my tickets on the day and collect them beforehand as the waiting times at the ticket machines and the counters can vary so much. I've lived all round the country and I've never had to wait as long as I do at Sheffield. If the main station's in London can get people through quickly why can't Sheffield. Fix the broken machines, fit some new ones at the back of the station and employ more staff at peak times. At other stations where they don't have enough counters, staff stand on the concourse with their machines, Sheffield has empty counter after counter.
  3. The problem is that there are very few routes from town to Norfolk Park, City Road. With Duke Street being one-way as well, Granville Road will be the only option.
  4. I've had to walk past a pair of young men taking drugs, the problem is I didn't realise what's going on until I was half way down the tunnel, I had to decide whether to carry on walking or turn back and go round the road. This has only happened once, but it's not a situation I would like to find myself in again and I don't use this bridge unless I'm with someone.
  5. I've not had any trouble, feel completely safe walking back from freinds own my own at night. No good pubs and not many shops, but it doesn't bother me because I tend to go out in town at night and shop once a week at the supermarket.
  6. There's plenty of space to pull over on Shrewsbury Road, behind the station. You would need to come out the back and walk along the tramtracks or up the hill a little. It is a one-way system though, so if you were heading back into town it might not be that good for you.
  7. I saw a bird of prey dive-bombing another bird over the city centre today (about 5pm), could that have been a buzzard?
  8. I've tried several times to pick up my tickets (that I booked on the internet) from the machines at the back of the station, but it only seems to allow you to buy tickets. If the barriers had been in place I'd have had to go to back to Granville Square to get round to the front of the station.

  11. I've commuted to Manchester by train for the past two years. It's not that bad. It's expensive, a monthly costs £280 but there are 2 fast trains (55 mins) and a slower stopping service most hours. The East Midlands Train can be a nightmare (2 carriages instead of 4), but I always get a seat on the TransPennine Express. From Crosspool it would be better to drive to Dore and catch the train, not quite so many stop at Dore as you move out of the rush hour but they are still quite regular. I've never driven to Manchester but workmates do. Most use Woodhead pass as it's safer and quicker. To be fair I often turn up at work in a much better mood than them.
  12. They don't need big cars because they use snow chains. Can't see Abbeydale Tesco stocking snow chains in a hurry.
  13. Im sorry, but I can't see how this is a good thing. A better service on the Sheffield-London line doesn't help those passengers crossing the country from Liverpool to Norwich, even if it is only 3% that use the service. Perhaps if East Midlands Trains had announced to it's passengers that they were at risk of losing the service some of them might be more inclined to start using it a bit more. East Midlands Trains are alienating their passengers, there are alot of unhappy passengers at the moment and they seem to be making things worse.
  14. East Midlands Trains have outshone themselves this week! I was told today that refreshments will not be available on the Liverpool-Norwich line from this Friday, as it is not cost effective. As from Friday several people will be made redundant and you will not be able to buy a drink on a 5h train journey. This is on top of the fact that they routinely lay on 2 carriages instead of 4 and failed to give a complete Sunday service last week because they didn't have enough drivers.
