  1. My great-great grandparents, William and Mary Windle, were living at 46 Charlotte Square, Sheffield at the time of the 1851 census. Can any help with whereabouts this was please?
  2. My great-great grandparents, William Longden and Ann Mason, were married at Watery Street or Watery Lane methodist church in 1860. Can anyone advise if this building still exists please?
  3. Does anyone know exactly where the Hyde Park cricket ground was in Sheffield? A number of important games were played there in the nineteenth century. I believe that it later became a greyhound track, and was eventually used for housing. What I can't find is details of the names of the roads that were built on the old ground.
  4. Thanks Mr Blue Owl. Yes, I used to be taken to watch Ecclesfield Red Rose as well, but I'm sure there was another team who played on the same pitch, called Colley Rovers.
  5. Does anyone remember a football team called Ecclesfield Colley Rovers? My dad used to take me to watch them in Ecclesfield Park in the early 1950s. Any info about what league they played in and what happened to them would be appreciated.
  6. I can remember the Styans in Firth Park, which is one of those listed for Bellhouse Road, in the early 1950s. Many years later I was introduced to an old relative, who told me that "The last time I saw you, you were climbing up Styans window." My grandma's sister, Auntie Rosie, used to keep an off licence just opposite Styans.
  7. We always used to sing a carol called "Sweet Bells". I think this was sometimes called the Sheffield Carol, and I know Kate Rusby has recorded it on a CD. Does anyone else remember this one?
  8. But how disappointing it was to learn that Jay Silverheels' real name was Harold Smith! Perhaps not quite so alarming as John Wayne starting life as Marion Morrison though.
  9. One of the highlights on television for me when I was a youngster was the Lone Ranger. You could always tell the bad guys because they wore black hats!! and wasn't "Tonto" the Spanish word for "Stupid"? I also liked "Bronco Layne", especially after he signed for the Wednesday.
  10. I was at Rawsons Infants School in Ecclesfield from 1953 to 1957. Does anyone have any photos of the school - now knocked down - and any information about the history of the school please? Or indeed were any of you there at the same time? I do know that the school crest in stone was found in a skip and is now in the churchyard at Ecclesfield, but other than that I don't know anything about the school.
  11. I was born there in November 1948. I knew that it was located in Burncross Road, but had no idea of the exact location. If anyone has any photos they could post that would be really good. Now in my 60s but still very proud to have been born in Chapeltown.
  12. Don't recall Wednesday playing the Blades in 1952-53 - the Owls were in division one and United in division two! They didn't play in the cup so would welcome clarification on the 7-3 game. Wednesday reserves played at Bramall Lane that season and Dooley scored twice in a 3-1 win.
  13. My dad used to take me to Hillsborough in the 1950s. I recall being passed over the turnstile if it was a friendly gateman, or underneath if he wasn't! The first game I can actually remember was against Lincoln City on Boxing Day 1958, when the Owls won 7-0. I think Redfern Froggatt and John Fantham both scored twice in this game. The keeper was Dave McIntosh, and I can remember him fluffing a goal kick and someone in crowd shouting "McIntosh, tha couldn't kick the skin off a rice pudding". Happy days! I was also taken to see Yorkshire play cricket at Bramall Lane - apparently a football team also played there in the winter months.
  14. I have a photograph of my grandad - Arthur Harrison - in a team photo, with the caption "Birley Carr FC 1909-10". Does anyone have any information about this team please.
