  1. Before moving to The Oval we lived in the prefabs on Hinde Close, Wensley St, we left because my Mum was scared when my Dad was on nights, he worked in the steel works, with just me & my little brother in the house....that was when we moved to the The Oval, I think it was the late 1940's .
  2. It was built above Hillards , the supermarket . My little boy was approx 2/3/4 yrs old when we first went there , he was born in late Dec '68.
  3. I lived on The Oval from 1948 to1966 & remember them well, when we walked to school from The Oval , we went down Eyncourt Rd & the pre-fabs ran across the bottom on Hucklow Rd, Happy Days !!!
  4. Do you mean the ones that were on Hucklow Road backing on to the park?
  5. I think people are getting mixed up here, the problem was not for people who are already registered on the site but for new members who want to join, as far as I know no one has reported joining SH recently, correct me please if i'm wrong.
  6. I remember the killing at the East House pub on Spital hill, but can't remember the details.
  7. I lived in the Cannon Hall pub from 1973 to 1981 and as far as we could find out from Whitbreads the old hall was converted and added to, this was very obvious when you looked " behind the scenes " . The large room on the left was a new addition with mens & ladies toilets , through to what used to be a concert room, we lowered the ceiling & changed it into the lounge & when you walked towards the back door from behind the bar & turned & looked up you could see where an extra room had been added to give the living quarters 3 bedrooms, kitchen, lounge & dining room. The ceiling was arched with plaster motifs. That left the original building being used for the tap room & the snug, an extension was added for the tap room toilets. Happy Days .....!!
  8. What about the one in Firth Park , that was pretty high ....!
  9. The owners of the Venus & the Coach House in the Wicker are now running the Venus in Dinnington, they still do those wonderful steaks & are well worth a visit.
  10. I think that Change Alley was a short gennel from Fitzallen Square to Norfolk Street but I can't remember what was on it !!!
  11. I know exactly what you mean...... for instance when we went to look round the Oval on the Brushes estate in Firth Park where I spent my childhood, all the roads look narrower & the houses smaller then I remembered but I think the trees having grown at a tremendous rate had some thing to do with it !! It just goes to prove that you can't go back & expect everything to be the same ......
  12. I came across this in a search of the webb, it may be worth a try : nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-place/houses.htm Good Luck !!!
  13. I think you may be thinking about the Gambit, but that was around the corner at the top of Commercial Street on the left hand side. Any one else have any ideas ?
  14. My Mum used boil it in milk wth sliced onions , I hated it like that but enjoyed it cold with salt, pepper & vinegar on it .
