  1. My granddad was a little mister he made scissors and had a workshop near Glossop Rd my mum used to take me there to watch him at work when I was little.

Hi did your granddad have any help IE: 'scissor dresser' as that was what my mum was.

  2. A very quick search online reveals the name of the daughter born in 1953 was Edwina C Booth.

However it appears that this family of Booths are not linked to my Booths - it is quite a common name in Sheffield.

I wish you well in your search for information.

Thanks for looking. I'll keep trying.

  3. I have a huge amount of information about Booths in the Sheffield area.

Could you give me more names and dates please ?

The mother was Sylvia nee Housley. 19 years old in 1947 lived at 19 Powell Street. Father Leonard Housley. She was a scissor dresser.

Married Gordon Booth. 22 years old in 1947. He was a bus conductor. His fathers name Walter Booth. lorry driver. Lived at 53, Fawcett street.

Married at St George with St Stephen Sheffield 1947.

There is also a Rita Stevens/ Stevins or it could be 'flechins' or someting else, can't read the signature properly. that was a witness as the marriage.

Sylivia went to St Stevens School in Sheffield, until age 14.

She had 2 boys Terence Gordan Booth 5 in 1953 and Stephen Howard Booth 3 in 1953. Then a girl born at Netheredge Hospital in 1953.

I have no idea where they went when Wentworth Street was demolished.

  4. Hello AEGALE,

I know someone by the name of Terry Booth who used to live in Watery Street which is not a million miles away from Wentworth Street. I lived in that area myself in the 1950s and got to know of him when he became our paper boy and have recently come across him again after all these years.

I don`t want to give you any false hopes thinking it might be who you`re looking for as he is a little older but there`s always a possibility he could be related. He comes in our local now and again so if I should see him I`ll ask him if he`s got a middle name and go from there.

Watch this space as they say!

    Hello again AEGALE,

Sorry I don`t have any good news for you. I`ve spoken to the Terrence Booth I know and he says that as far as he knows he never had any relatives who lived on Wentworth Street.

There was a huge slum clearance in the `60s and people were split up from their neighbours against their will. However, some went to live in the recently built Park Hill Flats and Hyde Park flats along with their neighbours. When these flats were being built they were described as `streets in the sky` as each deck was given a name as a street would, except they called them rows, e.g. Norwich Row etc. Maybe the Booths you are looking for went to one of these.

Perhaps it would be better if you started a new thread entitled `Looking for Booth family` and you might get a better response. There`s always someone out there who loves to help in situations like yours.

Good luck with your search and don`t give up!

Thanks for trying. I' ve done as you suggested and started a new thread.

At 13/14, they'd have been either in their last year at school or getting ready to venture out into the world of work.

I think up to the mid 1940s it stayed at 14, when it was raised to 15, from 14, (1944 education act?) and then in about 1970 it was raised again, to 16.

Hi I've tried to send you a private message but your in box is full.

  5. Can anyone help please. The 'Booths' lived at 184, Wentworth street. I believe they went there in 1947 when they married. Had 2 boys. in 1953 the boys would have been 5 and 3. Sylvia, the mother had a girl in 1953 at Netheredge Hospital. I've lost them and have no idea where to go.:help:

  6. Yes, your memory is good!.:) Old directories show "Mrs Emma Sladen, grocer" at 190 Wentworth Street. Pubic records show that Emma Taylor died aged 92 in 1959.

That would be about 4 doors away from the family I'm looking for. They were at 184 in 1953. Any idea where they went? (booth)maybe a different name. Would have been 4 of them . Mum dad and 2 boys.

  7. My uncle and family lived on Watery Lane from the 1930/40s until the houses were demolished and my mothers family lived on Wentworth street and Matin street in the early 1920s.

    Their name is Brindley.

I realise it is a bit later but in the 1950's my mother lived at 184, Wentworth Street. Before she married she lived at 19, Powell Street. Do you know of anyone who may know her? Booth is the married name, nee Hounsley.
