  1. I have just been down to the scene. The road is closed at the traffic lights on neepsend and Rutland road to just before Arthur's skips. It seems to only be closed to cars and not to pedestrians as I walked through and no one tried to stop me. I spoke to a fireman who looked like he was packing up and he said there had been a fire at the top of the hill but didn't give much more away than that. There is a river of petrol running down the road next to the skate park and they are collecting it just outside the gardeners rest pub in what only looks like a giant paddling pool. There is a fire and rescue incident van set up and a few fire engines and ambulances. They seem to have it all under control now by the looks of things
  2. I shut all my windows because the fumes were overwhelming and I started to feel dizzy. Phoned the environment agency and they advised to shut windows until they know what it is. River has returned to its usual dreary Don colour but still has a film of oil on top.
  3. I live on neepsend lane and have all my windows open. Just this min got up because I were laid in bed thinking what is that awful smell? Smells like paraffin or petrol? Hearing sirens right now and heard them an hour or so ago. I will go and see if I can see anything out there. ---------- Post added 19-07-2014 at 06:35 ---------- Just had a look at the river it is orange, a huge slick of oil or something all over it, and it's that that is causing the smell. I'm at the start of the five weirs walk so the river in front of my flat comes all the way through Hillsborough, so it must be a factory or something that is near the river that has exploded?
  4. Hi sorry but I had to have a bit of a giggle at the posts thinking the stones were some ancient ruins, I remember distinctly the 'children's play fort' being built in the mid 70's. it was part of a new facelift to the park. They dug out the hillside behind the back of the swings put in the slide and the steps to the side of it and also the play fort and various stepping/balancing stones. The park was up side down for quite a while and my friends and I couldn't wait till it was finished so we could go and play in it. We had hours of fun in the fort. I remember the smell of the brand new cement and sandstone. Mystery solved!
  5. Thanks Mecky are they made out of a meringue type consistancy? I haven't come across anything like the maxibar since the mid 70's nearest thing is a crunchie but a much much lighter texture. I will have a look in M&S Thanks!
  6. Hi they were called Maxibar puff candy and were in a white wrapper with green writing and some diagonal stripes at the end. They were really cheap which meant I could get one of them and some toffee nut popcorn as well with my spending money. I once thought it would be a good idea to pour milk into it to make a mint milkshake but the outer chocolate was so thin that the whole thing just collapsed I was distraught that I had wasted my weekly pocket money by this doomed experiment!
  7. Hi Nina hope your well? did you receive my message the other day? To PM you have to click on the persons name/handle eg Jo-jo28 a drop down menu will appear select send a private message. If you haven't seen the PM I sent you will have to look in your inbox Hugh thanks for the info Jo
  8. my great grandparents lived at 194 Wentworth Street so if while researching I hear of their good friends the Booths, I will let you know. Btw I know they were there in 1934 as its the address on my Nan's wedding certificate. My gt grandfather's named was Walter Mordecai Timm. Good luck in the search Jo-Jo
  9. Hi funnily enough I have had this past week off to decorate. I used Dulux Once, which they should rename Dulux Trice! The already white ceiling needed two coats and the ivory walls needed three coats! Like you say if you try and apply a thick coat it ends up patchy as it is difficult to get an even pressure all over. I really dont believe a true one coat product exisits. Jo-Jo
  10. WOW! so you are related to me as Walter is my Gt Grandfather too, this is fab I would love to see the family tree as its something I was going to start doing. I will go to my dads (who's mother, Vera is Walters daughter) and get the certificate that I remember seeing. I dont know much about the Timm family, only that they all lived around upperthorpe and Kelham Island where I now live. Please let me know more or PM me to arrange a meet up thanks so much Jo
  11. Hi Hugh, thanks for taking the time to look that up. You are right, I remember seeing on my nan's either birth or wedding certificate it said Walter Mordecai Timm - father. It was my dad that said his grandfather owned the beerhouse. Could it be that Mordecai Timm is the father of Walter Mordecai Timm? I believe their house stood next to the old wash house on Daniel Hill which is now a little green/park area. Also do you have burial records of them and if so where are the buried? I wouldnt mind having a wander up there if there are actual graves. thanks Jo-Jo
  12. Best - Hintlesham Hall, Sudbury, Suffolk http://www.hintleshamhall.co.uk/ Worst - Passage to Indian which used to be on Crookes
  13. If I see Vicky I will ask her if she still has that fab photo of the trio and will post it on here. Phil was also motorbike mad and so was I, he often took me for a spin on his Honda Superdream out in Derbyshire. Ben accidently knocked it over in the garage and snapped the brake lever off I thought Phil would go mad but he was fine about it, bless him he was a good dad!
  14. hi Jen, got mum sat with me now rattling the skeletons out of the closet!
  15. hi I now have my mum sat next to me, Ann Levers, Normans daughter. They lived two doors from each other when they were children and both of them went to the same organ tutor from the age of five. It was Normans profession when my mum was a child, playing for silent movies in the Albert Hall top of Cambridge Street, now Cole Brothers.
