  1. Sorry if I am going a little off subject by venturing into the 1980s In the 1980s I can remember Crompton and Moore being in the very end shop at the bottom of Sicey Avenue next to the Church , on the other end of that block was Kwik Save . Crompton and Moore must have been there well into the 1990s and now it is quite a "Posh" Electrical shop in Ecclesfield. There is also a Crompton and moore in Frenchgate Centre in Doncaster. For some reason I never felt welcome in C&M at Firth park , maybe the character of the area was changing , so went and spent my money at Ecclesfield
  2. Yes I like Pete Townsend and The Who . Yes I also like "Substitute"-- The Song ,it reminds me of Wagging School in the 1970s -- I think it's about some sort of drugs experience. However it's not got anything to do with Shiregreen Cemetery and the mis-orientation of a monument , or am I missing something.. Regards Rooby Doo
  3. I only just got to see the memorial today while visiting the grave of a family member. The memorial is in the shape of a compass ,however the northern point is pointing south and the east is pointing west ,am I missing something or has the monument been mounted 180 degrees from the way it should have been installed ? 5. I originally come from the North-West of the city and have walked on Loxley Common a good number of times. On the Long Lane side of the common just below the golf course on the Bradfield side of Long lane, above Myers Lane there is an area covered in what I know as Colliery Shale. Looking around on the site I cannot see any obvious mine access points. I would guess the access would be gained by an adit of sloping drift because the mineral seams will not be far below the surface level. I can remember in the mid to late 1990s Long Lane collapsing into a mining void and having to be closed to traffic for a while , a couple of months if I remember correctly , the sides of long lane were shored up by pilings while the road was dug out and remade. The normal seam I believe that was mined locally was the Halifax Hard Bed Coal seam that has Ganister as its Seat Earth , when I have seen an example of this seam the Coal was about 12 inches thick and the Ganister about half that , from this I would sumise that it was the Ganister that was the reason for mining and the Coal was a by-product. As a youngster myself and friends used to go down the abandoned mine below the Robin Hood Pub , at that time the entrance was clear and the remains of the steel trams tracks were still there , we would take torches and go in about 100 yards or so. There was also the remains of an engine house just off Greaves Lane , just above the entrance to the mine. There were tales of people going further into the mine and emerging above the Robin Hood Pub or in what I Know as Marriots Wood (between Stannington College (site of) and the R.H.Pub) , also there was supposed to be a route right through to Rivelin Valley (sounds a bit fanciful tome). A couple of times we used the top entrace to the mine workings , above the R.H Pub and again ventured into the Adit for about 100 yards or so , I know we would completely loose daylight and turn the torches off. Now all the entrances that I know of have totally collapsed. There was one of the mines that operated up until the mid 1970s and that was at Ughill but that would have been too far for us to go as kids.
  6. The road that the shop is on is actually Deep Lane , however a lot of people know it as Grange Lane , that's because after about 75 yards it does become GL .Deep Lane used to continue heading up towards Shiregreen running almost parallel to Bellhouse road however about 40 years ago the road was closed and covered over , it you dig down there are the remains of the road still there. The place where the Adult Shop is going to be (it opens 27 July2013 I think) is Seaton Park Industrial Units (or was?) , there have been all sorts of things there over recent years , a motor bike shop , a place making steel and wooden fencing , up until a few years ago Cintride Drills were made there (very good quality drills in my experience). The name of the new store is (I think) "Girls and Boys and Toys" ,,like Redgates I think--Hmmm. Going back to Deep Lane , the lane that was closed would have been very steep , does anyone know why it was closed , was there a junction onto Ecclesfield Rd.The Odd numbers on Deep Ln go right down to the bottom of Bellhouse Rd however the even numbers stop half way down towards Ecclesfield Rd , this makes it a nightmare for delivery drivers as there is no road between the "odds and evens". I was told and I have no proof for this that Deep Lane was once a supply route for Coal , Ironstone etc from Thorpe Hesley towards Sheffield , now Grange Lane which is the continuation of DL is a natural short cut between areas of North Rotherham and N.Sheffield.
  7. I saw a Deer on Thursday evening,I live on Lower Shiregreen and had decided to take the dog for a walk up to Morrisons at Ecclesfield,so we set off about 6.30pm,down Deep Lane onto the old railway track that has been converted to the TransPenine way and headed towards Ecclesfield , after about half a mile there is a large mound of clay blocking the path , however just before that there is a turn-off onto Butterthwaite Lane, I took this, then over the bridge that goes over the active rail line. The dog was behind me and as I went over the bridge I caught sight of what I at first thought was another dog , so naturally I wanted Levi my dog on a lead, then I noticed a few things about this "Dog" , that it was light brown , was very large , had long legs , didn't have a tail and its face didn't look very "Dog Like" in fact it wasn't a dog at all , it was a 4 foot tall Deer. I went to use the camera on my mobile but by the time it had turned on the Deer had gone.I had heard of there being Deer in the area before but had dismissed it as tall tales. Now I am a True Believer, and the only type of wine I partake in are Wine Gums..
  8. I went to the Asda next to Chaucer School today 17-May-2013 , there was a sign on the railing of Chaucer School saying that the Car Boot had been cancelled.
  9. Found something at this address about Brightside Colliery http://www.rotherhamweb.co.uk/h/extracts/oct1865.htm Happy Christmas everyone
  10. As far as I know the CB is on at Forge Valley School (Myers Grove) tomorrow 15 Sept 2012 , seller 8am buyers 9am.. Then on Sunday 16 Sept 2012 the CB at Wellington Street (to the rear of Debenhams where the old (1970s) fire station used to be(now a car park that is ideal for wet weather) is on , last week I arrived at 7.45 and the CB was just about completely set up. Also for Sunday morning there is one at Tesco on Infirmary Road , last week I walked from Wellington Street to Infirmary Road and it only took 20 mins (I am not the quickest walker nor the slowest).... Happy Car Booting!!
  11. I didn't see the closing ceremony and I did contrive to miss most of the events , but to describe the finale as "Bad Karaoke sung by Drunken Hair Dressers on a night out" is most amusing. For those with a mild case of Olypium poisoning what is the cure? For contestants with severe cases unfortunately they are doomed.
  12. How many Billions for 2 weeks ? Not a con , are you serious ?
  13. Which Hyde Park ? The one in Doncaster . Wake up and realise what a con these events are.
  14. Thank God it's over , 2 weeks of boredom , it's just another excuse for people with a lot of money to make more out of " Normal " people
  15. I only spotted it yesterday (30-Aug-2012) as I walked off Skelwith Rd onto Holywell Rd then went to drop down Colliery Rd , saw it from a distance and went to have a closer look. For a piece of sculpture 4000 pounds is not alot of money, however what is it to commemorate? The Colliery or the unfortunate deaths of those poor chaps in victorian times. On closer inspection it is obviously a cheap copy of the real thing , but what do you expect . I don't know when the the colliery closed but it must have been a long long time ago , there were a series or collieries along the Don valley heading towards and past Rotherham , heading North-East as the seams get deeper I can think of off the top of my head Jordan Pit, Holmes Colliery, Aldwalke Main, Cankclow(Rotherham Main),Roundwood and probably alot more that will come to me after I have posted this.In reality Sheffield has not been a heavily mined area by comparison to Barnsley and Rotherham , Sheffield mines were often small and often Drift or Adit types ,alot were driven in the search for Refractory Clay(Gannister) found as the Seatearth of the Halifax Hard bed seam...Any way Happy Miniing I'm gunna av mi brekfast then it's off to Dingleland(Barnsley)...
