  1. Hi Wrawbyfred. Yes Martin Hawk lived opposite Bank View Farm where Susan lived and was in the same year as Marie and Susan. I don't remember milk being delivered from a churn, we had milk delivered by John and Vera Clarke who lived at what was the old Grouse Beer House at the bottom of Strawberry Lea Lane. Susan Garnetts parents had (I think they were Guernsey cows) and they would occasionally give us the full milk with thick cream on top which we could shake into butter. Our bread was also delivered by a Mr. and Mrs. Hogg and they sometimes had the miniature Hovis brown loaves, delicious. The weekly shop was delivered by Jim Sherwood from Evans shop above Totley School. Despite all this, my mum still had to shop most days as there were five of us kids, and it's a long way from where we lived to the shops. Do you still live in the area, I can't remember if you said or not.
  2. So sorry to hear that the Fleur is being demolished. Let's hope the new houses can be afforded by local Totley people. Remember the bands of the Joe Cocker era and also in more recent times The Acoustic Angels. Their brilliant guitarist Carey Bayliss of course is an old Totleyite and a friend of my brother. Remember the Hawk family very well as they were one of our close neighbours living on Penny Lane in the Bents. Martin I think was the oldest, Robin was in the same year as me at Totley All Saints, and the youngest was Alan. I have a class school photo with Robin.
  3. Hi Dreb, don't worry about repeating yourself. We're supposed to do it at our age, people expect it. There are so many threads now that none of us can remember what was said previously. (Well done you for starting the forum). Mick has asked me to mention some names to see if they stir any memories. Dick Salt who lived at Owler Bar and Peter Dawson from around the Hillfoot area also Trevor and Hilary Vaughan from Moss Road.
  4. Hey Dreb, Sorry about the dog bite. Spoke with Mick and he remembers you very well. He recalled when Fuff had his accident and was in a cast and you all used to go and play cards with him. Also your visits to Miss Trotts girls school...... Neither of us could bring to mind the people you mention except Stubby who was a good friend during our teenage years. He joined the army and became a cook I believe. Would be nice to find out what happened to him and Sid Smith. Mick went to Art College in Batley, but afterwards, for some reason decided to join the army also. He served in Germany and later in Ireland during the troubles. He left the army many years ago and went back to the art again. He recently retired after many years as a Screen Printer. I went into nursing and retired early after nearly 30 years. A number of Totleyites came under my care from time to time, even an old school teacher of mine, which was a bit unreal.
  5. Hi Dreb, Thought it was about time I looked at the threads again and yes I do remember you as a couple "Ned and Dreb" always together. I remember for a while we all used to hang around in a group in Green Oak Park and around Totley Rise. Pam Beever, Becky Law, me (Liz) Sid Smith, I think Gillian Coffey from Dronfield also. There were a couple of guys from Dore and I can only remember one, knew him as "Bill Boiler". I remember taking you all back to the Rifle Range once. (got into trouble for that). Happy days. ---------- Post added 18-11-2015 at 16:03 ---------- Hi there Wrawbyfred, there's no way I can figure out who you are by your name. Yes I am Marie's sister. We live many miles apart now but as with all my sister we keep in touch almost daily and yes she is well. Marie left Totley C of E for King Egberts after passing 11 plus. Her best friend was Susan Garnet who lived at Bank View Farm in Totley Bents. Both were big pals of John Perkington. Would be nice to hear your memories.
  6. I don't recall him running the Post Office, but I know John and his wife Pauline had a greengrocers shop at Green Oak, somewhere below Main Avenue. It's now a private house. Pauline is still involved with the Totley History Group.
  7. John Perkington was a big speedway fan and very serious about it. He used to give a gang of us in the Bents a lift to Owlerton Stadium to watch the races. Can't say I was keen on the smell of the fuel they used and can still smell it. It was exciting though.
  8. Remember Jeremy Woodhouse at Totley All Saints School, only in the Juniors as he moved schools when he passed 11 plus. He was never boring and always seemed to enjoy life, and with his mates, was always in trouble. (I think he was the only boy who got the cane "every day" or it just seemed like that). I remember him getting in trouble for putting those cardboard toy coins into the sweet slot machine outside Perkintons Post Office. Hope he learned the error of his ways.
  9. Does anyone know the name of the Chinese Restaurant that was in Fitzalan Square in the 50s and 60s. Remember you went down some stairs.
  10. The only person I recall is a Jeremy Woolhouse who was in the same junior and infants at Totley C of E School. about 1953 to 1959ish.
  11. I have lived in Portugal for many years but before I emigrated I used to play music at the John Thomas (Bell Hag)pub on Manchester road Crosspool every Tuesday. I found out recently that the owner and my friend John Chidlaw suffered a major illness. Can anyone tell me what happened to John and if there is a way to contact him. Thank you.
  12. Hi Fatrajah, I remember Susan Gonsior, she was in the same year as my brother Mick Cooper at Totley All Saints School. I think I have a photo of her somewhere. He says that as far as he can remember she went to work for some big food retail company (?) and travelled abroad with this job. That was in the 70's. No idea what happened to her after that time.
  13. Hi. Sadabbot, I don't recall all the names you mention, but remember Becky Law who was in my year at Totley All Saints School, she was my best friend for many years until she got engaged and sort of left our group who knocked around in Green Oak Park. Gillian Mangles was a friend also, although we went to different schools. We shared a boyfried at one time (Phillip Oldham, who lived in Dronfield) we both chucked him later.
  14. The years approximately 1961/2 ish. I was born in 1947 and attended All Saints C of E School. 1952 to 1963. Pam Beever had a brother Michael, they lived on Lemont Road, Becky Law lived on Aldam Road, also remember Michael Wright (Bergy) Roy Stubbs, Stephen Wrigglesworth, Syd Smith, Gail Billing. They were the people who hung around in Green Oak Park. Happy days. The park was always well looked after and we were always careful not to annoy the "parkie".
  15. Just reading recent posts about the prefabs in Totley. Had friends who lived in the prefabs and on Aldam Road. Spent time after school and weekends in the park at Green Oak, even though it was a bit of a treck to get there. Can anyone tell me if it is still there, or has it been developed into something else? Would also like to know if anyone I know still lives in the area. Pam Beever, Becky Law (married now).
