  1. Thanks for that link - very useful. I asked the library a couple of years ago about when they would have e-books available, and to keep me informed. And did they...?
  2. Now to be renamed the Famous Grouse The OP's also helped to promote the Fox House near Holmfirth: we paid a first visit yesterday lunchtime and were well pleased with food, beer, service and great view across to Bleaklow. It may not have "it's fashion finger on the pulse, with a thoroughly modern country house feel", but I would hesitate to visit anywhere that was being described by someone sounding like a trainee estate agent.
  3. Always good to resurrect the oldies, eh? 2009 2010
  4. Has the Windows 10 freeze stopped happening to people or has everyone learned to live with it? Mine was getting to the point where it would freeze 2 or 3 times an hour, and I decided to bite the bullet and do a clean install (it was originally an upgrade from Win7). 3 days so far, and not one freeze A bit of a pain having to start from scratch and reinstall everything, but it seems to have done the trick, and it does boot faster now as well.
  5. Another one getting hangs/freezes. Been happening several times a day for the past couple of weeks. I suspected a graphics card component (Nvidia Backend) as that was always highish CPU when the hangs occurred, so I stopped that running - but still get the hangs. All my drivers are up-to-date (according to Driver Booster) and I can see nothing in the Event Logs that ties in with these hangs. It's been driving me nuts trying to find what's at the bottom of this, but I'm running out of ideas. Did you people who are experiencing this get Windows 10 via the upgrade or a clean install (mine is upgrade)?
  6. As much as I detest Google for its practices, they've certainly come up with some impressive stuff over the years: the search engine when it first came out, Google Earth, Streetview, and now this. Still don't like them as a company, though
  7. You're not alone according to this thread. It might be worth following that thread for a while to see if HP ever do come up with a solution (unlikely); so far, all that seems to be suggested is to install Windows 10 from ISO/DVD and then install new drivers, but that may be something you have no desire to try.
  8. I upgraded from 7 to 10 today. Took about 45 minutes of anxiety ("sit back and relax," it said!), but mostly OK. Can't say I'm overly impressed with it: boot time is certainly no quicker than 7, and the look-and-feel is not great - though I'll probably get used to it. The only problems I've encountered so far are (a) MS Money wouldn't work because it said it needed IE6 (!) to run, but there's a simple registry fix for that, and (b) I have a Roland A-500S USB keyboard for which there are no drivers (a pity, but no show stopper). Annoyances?: I don't like the pop-ups that appear every time I run certain programs (Privazer especially) - is there any way to say "Yes, it's OK to run this program every time."?
  9. The future's bright, the future's red and white.
  10. Mainstream media are slowly catching up, but the best source for news on that front is Exaro.
  11. FR24 usually provides best coverage and details, but Planefinder is useful, too.
  12. Remove the last 3 characters (which are always number+letter+letter) from each postcode and you're left with what you need?
  13. Up like a rocket, down like a feather always applies...
  14. Something I'm interested in is a list of pubs in Sheffield and the surrounding area that allow vaping. Is there such a beast? All I've found so far is a British Isles map but it's a bit sluggish and I'm not sure how up-to-date it is.
  15. The purchases are tied to the Google account, not to the device, so they can be installed again wherever you want. As I recently discovered. Got my first Android phone, signed in to Google on it, and it quietly went off and installed all the apps I have on my tablet... over 4G as I'd not then set up the wifi... So I used up half my monthly data allowance in an hour before I realised what was happening! Sometimes smartphones can be a little too smart...
  16. No, ISPs are not all as bad as each other. But if you want the best, then it's not likely to be cheap. Even though I'm no longer with them (because I moved to DR in 2011...), I have no hesitation in recommending aaisp. Reliable, no nonsense, technically competent, and a constant thorn in BT(O)'s side. If you're still unsure about who to go to (and if cost is not a show-stopper), give them a call and they'll be quite willing to tell you exactly what they can offer you and when.
  17. Thanks. I've seen loads of meadow pipits before, but never a tree pipit, and I arrived at the latter possibility by a process of elimination. It wasn't calling or flying about, so nothing else to go on apart from habitat (the pic was taken from Stanley Hill, which is not really meadow pipit territory). To be honest, I thought it was a goldfinch when I pointed my camera at it
  18. Snapped this while out this morning. Does anyone know what it is? Tree pipit, maybe?
  19. I contacted the Central Library about this back in February, and got this reply: Thank you for your query. We are currently reviewing the market for e book suppliers, with the intention of offering an e lending service in the next financial year. Overdrive will be considered along with the other companies offering a platform for this product.
