  1. Typical of the Sheffield Forum that the council are damned if they do and damned if they don't! If they didn't build the new market they'd be accused of letting the town die and the castle market being a disgrace yet by building it the very same people are complaining it's too new and shiny and the council shouldn't be spending money on a new market! Some people will just complain about anything and everything! I for one can't wait for the new market and congratulate Sheffield Council on showing some ambition for once.
  2. I saw them putting up the signs yesterday, called Akbars downtown isnt it? Funny that it still has a seperate takeaway though, wasn't sure if it was an official Akbars or not.
  3. Sharrow Vale Rd in Hunters Bar is our Lark Lane. Also consider Nether Edge, Broomhill & Crookes for the similar kind of life you're after. Woodseats, Meersbrook, Hillsborough & Walkley all decent family areas whilst Sharrow is more inner city & multi cultural with great restaurants but a bit more crime.
  4. They've missed mine for the second day & my recycling since Friday (in Sharrow).
  5. According to the budget report it will cost £150k to renovate Woodbourn and £75k per year to run it but Don Valley would need £1.6m to renovate and costs £500k per year to run.
  6. I live here and so far (touch wood) haven't had any problems, though did see a police raid on Friday night when I went to the shops! The closeness to town, great restaurants, the cremorne, and 24 hour shops definitely make up for any downsides though. Feels more like a busy district on inner London than most places up north, know that's not for everyone but I like the feeling of living in a big city rather than somewhere more quiet. I like the diversity too and hearing different languages, though know most people on this forum would consider that their idea of hell!
  7. No they are lovely but then could've either gone up through Walkley, Crookes & Broomhill, down Ecclesall Road & Ecclesall Woods & back up Abbeydale Rd or Chesterfield Rd & finish on Arundel Gate or outside the station. I watch the Tour every year & stages always finish in the hearts of beautiful cities, not grim dual carriageways in industrial areas. ---------- Post added 18-01-2013 at 00:29 ---------- Or else along the Riverlin Valley then past Ladybower & back into the city through Hathersage & Eccy Rd, or if they couldn't go through Derbyshire then from the Riverlin Valley up to Fulwood & Rustlings Rd & then Eccy Rd into town.
  8. Have to say I'm really gutted with the route through Sheffield, a real opportunity to show off some of the best of the city but instead it's going to loop around some estates & finish in an area of industrial dereliction.
  9. This keeping anyone else awake? Anyone know why it's out? Up for work in 4 hours so hope it finds whoever it is looking for soon!
  10. A word of warning, Middlesbrough had a very similar music festival to Tramlines called Middlesbrough Music Live that was a great success and bought a load of money into the city, then the council cut funding and they charged £12 for the ticket, the festival bombed and ending up dying, and in the end the city lost out.
  11. I live just down the road in Sharrow and really like Nether Edge & go jogging there all the time. Lots of lovely treelined streets and the shops and market are good. I believe the smaller terraced houses the other side of Abbeydale Road have a few problems but most of Nether Edge is preferable to Hillsborough for sure (I don't know Handsworth).
  12. I've been in a similar position myself having moved down to Sheffield (am a Sunderland supporter), been around a few games so far at Bramall Lane, Hillsborough and a couple of non-league. I really like both Bramall Lane and Hillsborough as both are proper old football grounds, since I live a lot closer to Bramall Lane, plus it's generally a bit cheaper (and beer is a lot cheaper!) I've been to see them more. Suppose if you're moving to Hillsborough, Walkley or up that way then Wednesday will be best for you, anywhere along Eccy Road, Abbeydale or Woodseats and United will be more handy.
  13. Bit of a long shot I know but noticed on the Sheff Utd website it said entry is £10 for those knowing season ticket holders who can quote a season ticket holder's customer number when buying their tickets... Sadly being new to Sheffield I don't know anyone with a season ticket yet but was wondering if any kindly Blade might fancy PMing me the customer number as I fancy a bit of football today (was gonna go to Sheffield FC v Gresley Rovers but it's off in the rain).
  14. Still had the old signs up when I went past last week & didn't look that inviting from the outside.
  15. Hillsborough has a few decent options, a spoons in an old swimming pool (few decent ales on), the New Barrick on Penistone Road is a good Castlerock pub, the Hillsborough hotel, and then plenty of rough pubs that might be alright for a swift one.
  16. I can see that line becoming a tram train if the line to Rotherham is a success.
  17. I think the flats look really nice design wise, and the ones I've seen for sale look spacious and well layed out, seem to be around the 100k range for a 3 bedroom so not particularly cheap, which makes me think perhaps more students are living in them. I know they're next to lots of student halls so bound to be noisy at times. Had a walk through and most of the kids and mothers in the playground seemed to be of south asian or somali ethnic origin. Did you know they were featured in an episode of Out of the Blue where a young family's baby had died & they tried to cover it up?
  18. When you say the Libertines, what you actually mean is the drummer right (not that he's not a nice fella)?
  19. I'm going to have my ashes scattered at Forge Dam I think, so watch out if you're playing in the Porter Brook downstream.
  20. Sounds like most people recommend the Parkway then even though it's a fair bit longer than coming through North Sheffield I guess it's a lot faster as a trunk road so will save me time.
  21. Aye so that definitely rules out coming through Hillsborough! Sounds like the Parkway is my best bet even though it's a fair bit longer that way.
  22. Am driving a van down next Saturday from York to Sheffield as moving house & need to arrive roughly around lunchtime. Seems to be a few different routes I could take & was wondering if anyone had any experience of the traffic/road conditions on each and which would be the least painful way into the city? a) M1 round Leeds, off at junction 36 and using the A61 through Grenoside & Hillsborough & round the inner ring road counter clockwise to London Road. b) M1 round Leeds, off at junction 35 and using A6135 (Barnsley Road) through north Sheffield and Burngreave to the Wicker & then round the inner ring road clockwise & past Park Square & the station to London Road. c) M1 round Leeds, off at Junction 34 & down Meadowhall Road & Brightside Lane to the top of the Wicker & then as above. d) As above off at Junction 34 but over the viaduct, round Tinsley roundabout and along Sheffield Road & through Attercliffe until the top of the Wicker or along Effingham road to Park Square & then as above. e) Along M1 to Junction 33 and then into Sheffield along the Park Way to Park Square & then as above. f) Avoid the M1 & Leeds altogether and use the M18 & then either junctions 31 or 33 (as above). I'm guessing Meadowhall is going to hell with the Christmas shopping so would I be best avoiding it altogether & either leaving the M1 at junctions 36 or 35 or taking the M18 and approaching from the South?
