  1. Manchester has a huge christmas market with a great atmosphere. Not so keen on the York one, doesn't have such a good atmosphere, just a way to sell tat to tourists in the off season. I did quite enjoy the Sheffield one last year but I'd say Manchester's is the best!
  2. Where are the 2 today? Always thought it a shame Sheffield doesn't have a proper tourist hostel for backpackers in the city centre.
  3. Are you open on Friday as well cityspinner? Will definitely check the store out & the one near the station too (if it's open!).
  4. My friend from Berlin who is a massive vinyl junkie will be visiting Sheffield this weekend, are there any record shops I should definitely take him to? I think he's mostly into indie, electro, post-punk that kinda thing.
  5. Sorry to hear you were abused. It's happened to me in the past too and can be frightening, in answer to your other question though Tesco hasn't shut down, it's doubling in size so is shut for a refit.
  6. I'm going to be back in Sheffield next weekend and follow you on twitter... Will the offer still be running then?
  7. The flat I was looking at was for sale. I recognise the name of that bloke who owns the freehold, just googled it and confirmed as the man who tried to redevelop Donnington Park a few years ago. Did Sheffield sell off a lot of council housing to his company then?
  8. No trains from Bakewell to anywhere I'm afraid! Only place I could think you could afford in the Peak District on the railway with your budget is the New Mills/Chinley/Chapel-le-frith end... Not much in Bakewell either I'm afraid... Buxton you would be able to afford though. Otherwise have a look at the Peak District end of Sheffield (Dore, Totley, Eccleshall etc) or perhaps somewhere just over the border in Derbyshire (Dronfield or Chesterfield) would be OK. Both of those have good train links into Sheffield. If it's just nice scenery and hills you're after then plenty of parts of Sheffield have that too. Oughtibridge is up in the hills and in your budget, or places like Stocksbridge/Deepcar might suit? Or a little further afield (yet linked to Sheffield by train) is Penistone which is a nice town in the moors with it's own cinema and supermarket etc. If Peak District is definitely what you want though I suggest Buxton, Glossop, New Mills, Chapel-le-frith are your best bets of which only New Mills and Chinley are linked directly to Sheffield by train.
  9. Seen a really nice flat on Old Street with a great view of the city centre and really nice inside. Can anyone tell me what the area is like? Know it's quite near Park Hill so it might have a bad reputation but will it be on the way up with all the redevelopment there? Seems close to the city and a bargain price for what it is so wondering what the catch is? Is there a lot of crime in the area?
  10. How much are you looking to spend on your home and what sort of salary are you hoping for? Sheffield also has some really nice areas on the borders of the peaks and these can be a bit cheaper than living in the Peak District's nicest spots... Also outside of Sheffield anywhere along the Hope Valley Railway will set you back a pretty penny but lots of nice cheaper properties in Buxton and the likes of New Mills (direct trains to Sheffield and Manchester) and Glossop. If you've equity from London prices you may be able to get a lovely place up here though. Check rightmove As for car travel you should be OK for all but a few days a year. They grit the main roads so unless we have unprecedented weather like last year it shouldn't be a matter of missing more than a few days at the worst of the weather! Bakewell would be driveable to Sheffield but Buxton sounds like a bit of a mission. Anywhere over that side of the Peaks might be worse in the weather, and those places (Buxton, Glossop etc) are really more orientated towards Manchester then Sheffield. As for the city itself. Well it has some very nice parts and some grotty parts in need of redevelopment. The 90's/00's redevelopment bug did result in some redevelopment of the city centre but not as much as Leeds and Manchester. Personally I think Sheffield is lovely and has great nightlife and culture (particularly music). Also areas like Eccleshall Road have lots of cafes and boutiques and are a bit like an Islington type area (but much cheaper!)... If you do really want to move to Buxton though don't write off working in Manchester. It's a far bigger city than Sheffield and has a lot more jobs. The city centre has been extensively redeveloped and it has good train links to Buxton, Glossop etc. Yes it has some rough areas but if you're communiting in to the city centre or south manchester (where a lot of offices are too) then you won't really ever enter those.
  11. Hi, My friend is coming to visit next month and hoping to take him out into the countryside at Castleton for a day. Seems to be a lot of different companies and a few different routes mind. Does anyone know the return fare (approximately) to Castleton? And can you only use it on the company you travel on (so if it's Hullys then not use First or vice-versa?)... Also I see there is also a route that goes through Ladybower... Would be nice to show off the scenery to him. Can you go one way and back the other on a return ticket?
  12. My mate is coming over from Germany to see me in York but I was hoping to show him a decent night out in Sheffield so have booked into a hotel and want to show off the city as I really like it. He is into his indie/electro and punk stuff and I think he'll really like it up Division Street so going to take him to a few places round there. Am worried that it'll be quite quiet with the students being away and Leeds festival being on though, can anyone recommend any decent places I can take him, and anywhere that will be open late and should show off a good side of the city?
  13. Just seen your place on rightmove, looks lovely and the view is to die for. Sadly probably a little far out for us right now in life for the odd night out in town but in a few years would've probably been perfect! Good luck with your sale.
  14. Not sure where I'll be working yet but will most likely be either the Northern General, Middlewood or Ouseburn Road near Sharrow Vale.
  15. Hey there Sheffield forumers, please be gentle with me on my first post! My girlfriend and me are looking to move to Sheffield soon as I finish my nursing degree. We've really fallen in love with the city! We're just starting to think about what area to be looking for. We know the city centre and Eccleshall Road reasonably well from our trips down but other than exploring by bus and tram a lot of the city is still a mystery waiting to be discovered! We're looking for a 2/3 bedroom house, possibly a Victorian terrace (bay windows would be nice though) in a nice leafy area with a few decent local shops and pubs, near a nice park would be nice and in an area that doesn't have too many problems with crime, reasonable transport into town and somewhere that would be good to bring up a young family would be good too. Our budget is ideally around £120k but we could probably stretch to £150k for the dream property (with amazing views or something to set it apart!)... Having played around on Rightmove it looks like a lot of West Sheffield is out of our reach but these areas appear to be in our budget: Hillsborough: Crookes: Walkley: Nether Edge/Abbeyfield Road: Norton Lees/Meersbrook Park: Heeley: of these are there any to desperately avoid or that stand out from the rest using the criteria that I set out? I was all set up for Hillsborough with the good shops, lots of pubs and access to the park and tram but playing around with rightmove looks like we can get lots of nice properties in these other areas, so what should we know about them?
