  4. When The Mother Folkers(http://www.facebook.com/themotherfolkers) last played at The Cobden earlier this year, something magical took place. Over 150 hardy souls crammed in to shake, to swing, to sway and even to mosh. In a folky kind of way! The ciders were flowing, feet were tapping and a great night was had by all. Read about it here (http://nowthenmagazine.com/issue-47/live/) More of the same is to be expected so dont be shy to come and see for yourself why this band are rated so highly. 5. Unfortunately, DJ Felix Goldfinger has had to return to his secret hollowed out mountain lair (near Newcastle) and will be unable to spin his magic at this event. However, his partner in DROP THE BOMB Sir Wixalot will be weaving his magic spell instead.
  6. One week to go folks and another wee review..... It’s hard not to find yourself nodding along with Stanley Odd. Combining social speculation with bursts of catchy hooks; it’s refreshing to hear a hip hop act that actually sings about something relevant. It’s more Caledonia than California, politics over posing. The rap collective’s second album has them sounding as fresh and surprising as when their first tunes landed in 2009. Critical acclaim and major festival spots has failed to water down the six-strong group’s unique sound and lure them into the creative wilderness of mainstream hip hop. Essays could be written on the themes and songs of Reject. Second track ‘Antiheroics’ is a stinging rebuke against the apathy that is rotting at the heart of Britain. Veronika Electronika’s (best name ever) mysterious voice provides camouflage for the ferocity of MC Solareye’s rhymes as he unleashes both barrels on the electorate, pronouncing, “Of course you’re being watched/It’s a modern fact/Putting an X in the box/Says you’re watching back”. ‘Marriage Counselling’ finally provides a worthy musical take on the upcoming Independence vote. Free of petty prejudice, it sees Stanley Odd willing to look society square in the eye and weigh up the pros and cons with a simple call and response structure. Packed full of quotable lyrics, perhaps “An alcoholic, sectarian, illiterate lout/I’m providing the medicine/You’re just spitting it out” is the most sobering way Scotland will be described this year. But Reject‘s finest moment comes on ‘Get Out My Headspace’ – an absolute rejection of the mundanity and absurdities of modern life. Accompanied by an unassuming synth line, you can feel the group blowing off three years worth of patronising aspersions with the song’s rebuking chorus of “The top 20 pop chart/Get out ma headspace/Hip hop is not art/Get out ma headspace”. Just about everybody gets a blast of their ire – scene-sters, politicians, bankers, illicit journalists
There is a video here but be warned there is a little swearing in it
.so we are simply posting the link for you! It is an album that spans so much more than hip hop. It is about 21st century life rather than a product of its genre. It should be huge, but whether it will or not will depend solely on the prejudices of music fans – will you give it a try? ‘Get Out Ma Headspace’ is available as a free download from the Stanley Odd’s bandcamp http://stanleyodd.bandcamp.com/ Hundreds paid £7 to see this band at The Liquid Rooms last night, but its a free show at The Cobden next Saturday.
  7. "Reject", the new album by Stanley Odd came out on Monday. A wee review of it is here..... http://louderthanwar.com/stanley-odd-reject-album-review/ They are definitely worth checking out.....
  8. We have been a bit quiet in recent weeks on the live music front so now its time to be back with a BANG! Scottish Hip Hop act STANLEY ODD will be appearing at The Cobden on Sat 29th September from 9pm. http://www.stanleyodd.com Also, DJ Felix Goldfinger will be spinning a mix of hip hop, funk, soul and electronica from 8pm til late. So, who exactly are Stanley Odd? MC Solareye, aka Dave Hook, joined fellow vocalist Veronika Electronika, Samson the Snake, AdMac, Scruff Lee and T Lo back in 2009 to create the Edinburgh-based outfit, and together they have been creating quite a buzz in the Scottish music scene. Their 2010 debut album Oddio was met with glowing reviews and September 17 sees the release of their much-anticipated second album, Reject. As the title suggests, the new record is a collection of stories about rejection and rejecting. With a crushing lack of employment opportunities and a questionable government, many of us are examining the society in which we live. Hook is too, and his unmerciful tongue targets current social and political issues as well as some personal and emotive topics, which are especially evident in Carry Me Home. He raps in his native accent – refreshing in a genre so often plagued by transatlantic tones – but for Hook it is a simple matter of integrity: “Basically what I’m trying to do is tell an honest story,” he says, “and you can’t do that in a fake voice.” Summer festival appearances at the likes of Insider and Wickerman saw Stanley Odd broaden their fanbase – it wasn’t so much about playing to people who weren’t hip-hop fans, more a case of playing to people who didn’t know they were until they saw them perform. Their inspirational live shows are truly something to be reckoned with and they are rumoured to be lining up collaborations with certain folk musicians. So far, the new album has been positively recieved by the critics and you can exclusively listen to it here- http://www.thepopcop.co.uk/2012/09/hip-hop-is-our-folk-music/ Support live music and hope to see you along for a night that might not be what you expect- but it will be fun! 9. Was that the rainy night the Laudrup brothers were in? They are both Great Danes after all. And that plaice always smells of fish....... (I'll get me coat) PS. Love The Washington.
  10. Correct me if I am wrong but I think most of them were commissioned? Also, the one opposite the fire station (site of new market) has been jumbled around and is now unreadable. There was one one the side of delaneys, but think that has gone too.
  11. Just a reminder that this is tonight. If you like The Beatles, give these guys a listen.....
  12. Tried Shapla last night for the first time and thought it was wonderful. Good service and food which tasted fantastic. One of the best meals out I have had for a long time.
  13. How about...TRAMpoline, exTRAMarital, pasTRAMi, sTRAMash and ulTRAMarine? Probably best to avoid trampish though....
  14. Were you one of the lucky 200+ that turned up when this Fab 4 played at The Cobden back in May? We are delighted to welcome back one of the best Beatles tributes in the country. As always its free entry and the fun starts just after 9pm So, as well as bringing your dancing shoes, we hope you are also in good voice. Altogether now..." Hey Jude, Dont make it bad, take..... "
