  1. That's a very lazy explanation. Like I have said, if you are prepared to pay, you can source very good quality steels. Our steelmaking capability is very weak compared to other countries, such as the Chinese who have invested heavily in very modern equipment and infrastructure over recent years.
  2. Hope he doesn't if he doesn't even know that different grades of stainless steel exist.
  3. Nope, stainless steel can actually rust. In fact, since you're not sufficiently educated to know, here is a free lesson. It is primarily chromium that makes steel stainless. You’re looking at something like 12% for it to impart its “stainless” properties. This minimum amount is required for a stable Cr oxide layer to form, it is this layer that prevents rusting. However, if stagnant water is present, then this oxide layer can break down over time and allows rust to form. Now, if you have higher levels of Cr, then your stainless properties will obviously improve with a thicker or more stable layer of Cr oxide being formed. Other alloys added to the steel can also improve corrosion resistance, such as molybdenum. A high Mo content can improve pitting corrosion resistance. A high nickel content can produce a group of stainless known as austenitic stainless steels. Probably the most common one being Type 304 which can be found in decent cutlery. You may have noticed some numbers found on your knives and fork, such as 18/8, which in this example means that the stainless it was made from contains 18% Cr and 8% Ni. Some cheap stuff might have 13/0, which is 13% Cr and 0% Ni. As I say, if the manufacturer isn’t willing to pay for a decent stainless grade of stainless, then they simply will not get it. Any steelmaker who makes stainless steels can make the vast majority of grades available, but you must be willing to pay for it. Here endeth the lesson.
  4. Your so called default position has come and gone TWICE. It's never going to happen. Just live with it.
  5. You still don't get it. There was nothing wrong with the steel, If the UK manufacturer wasn't prepared to pay for higher grade stainless, then why would they get it? You make anything to a given price point. Metallurgy is driven by chemistry, not geographical borders.
  6. There are so many things wrong with your statement. Firstly, it is not Spanish steel that is at fault. It is the UK manufacturer that decided to source low quality stainless steel. There are many different grades of stainless steel, ones such as 316L are decent with high levels of nickel, chromium and molybdenum. It is a simple matter of you get what you pay. You were cheap and deserved what you got. It really is that simple. So don't needlessly turn it into an obvious rant about anything foreign, it makes you look pathetic.
  7. The banks that were bailed out were viable businesses. British Steel is not.
  8. Told you British Steel wouldn’t be rescued. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48365241
  9. Scunthorpe is saved from collapse is it? Bye bye 5000 jobs.
  10. You give me an another uneducated person who has an honorary doctorate in engineering.
  11. Is the safety of the patient at risk? You are being very disingenuous with that pathetic remark. I know many doctors and nurses who would overlook their religious obligations if the needs of the patients come first. They don’t just leave the patient hanging to go pray like you make out. So why don’t you take your racist implications and put them where the sun doesn’t shine instead of trying to smear our dedicated health professionals.
  12. The government isn’t even putting its name to save Scunthorpe. Can’t tell the difference?
  13. Sheffield Forgemasters has had a loan agreement brokered by the government with Rolls-Royce, Babcocks and BAEs underwriting the loan from US bank Wells Fargo. Scunthorpe will not get this treatment.
  14. Your view is already being enacted upon. Scunthorpe is not considered to be nationally strategic. Meanwhile, Sheffield Forgemasters is and has been financially supported. Therefore, Scunthorpe should be allowed to collapse. It is of no national value.
  15. Failing businesses should not be propped up by taxpayers money.
  16. Rightfully dismissed. You can’t force a religious opinion on anyone no matter how well intentioned.
  17. How are Leavers going to spin this as good news for Brexit in the election? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48347371 Oh yes, your so called working class are getting what they want right? Bottom line is you don’t know how to get that unicorn you were promised. Just let the grownups sort this out.
  18. You know what you just said is total and complete rubbish right? The rail networks for example can very easily be placed back into public ownership. The cheapest way for any government to do it is to let the franchises expire and not put them out to tender again. Also, how do you explain the nationalising of the banks during the financial crash? Wait, were we still in the EU when that happened? Ok, you need a history lesson. There has NEVER been a government that didn't occupy the centre ground. It has always been between the centre-left or centre-right. The Tories or Labour do not have exclusivity of this standing. Labour is lurching to the left and the Tories to the right. There is a great void in the middle for the Lib Dems and Change UK to take advantage of.
  19. I am already creating a nest egg so that I can send both my children to university. By the time that happens, I think it will be around £60k a piece. That is how much I think a good education is worth. I don't want my kids to start adulthood with any form of financial inconvenience overhanging their heads. Having said that, I need to see what the student loan structure is going to be then in order to determine what benefits there maybe to taking out a loan versus paying it off straight away. Parents’ need to play a far more active role in their children’s education. I can help by virtue of my engineering degree. I have been though the system and know what it takes to succeed in it. We are an absolute disappointment in the PISA ranking. We are 23rd! Why on Earth is that even acceptable when we have world class universities? The Scandinavian countries knock us out the park and the far east Asian countries are ridiculous. Why is it the Chinese Gaokao, which is their version of our A-Levels considered far more highly. I am not even saying a bit, but massively. A grade A* in A-Levels is worth 56pts. The Gaokao equivalent is 64pts! http://factsmaps.com/pisa-worldwide-ranking-average-score-of-math-science-reading/
  20. So an educated person being able to earn more, such as doctors, engineers and scientists need to be revolted against? Really? So you don't believe in an educated society and all the advantages that come with it?
  21. The vast majority of people who fill menial jobs are people with a significantly lower attainment of education. To say otherwise is just an outright lie. Why on Earth would I want to earn ÂŁ50k/year fitting toilets when I can earn far more being a chartered engineer?
  22. Employers do not think it is sufficient in professional positions. So ask yourself this, a person with only five GCSEs is going to be able to achieve what exactly? I do not consider myself elite, I am a realist. I appreciate the fact that higher education is needed if you want to make a decent living.
  23. Unsurprising. In a similar vein, we can't use Lenovo laptops (includes the Thinkpads) because of security issues.
  24. I used to watch it because of Terry Wogan's commentary. Graham Norton is just as good.
