  1. Hi Everyone, I don't know if you can help but in short You may have in your time seen a Man pushing a pram around the streets of Sheffield no matter the weather, wearing his green wig and waving his giant foam hand. For nearly 30 years, John Burkhill has dedicated his life to raising money for charity - and he says he won't stop until he's raised £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Support. Now for the first time, John has put together thanks to the people of Sheffield (via a Crowd Funding website) his auto biography. Full of moving memories and Yorkshire humour, it's the fascinating tale of a unique life. The book is on sale at £9.99 in Waterstones (Orchard Sq, Meadowhall)< Both Football Clubs Shop and The Moor Market. Plus Amazon (Search John Burkhill) WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please can anyone who loves John and what he does, he is a total Sheffield legend, help us spread the word. Every penny from every book sold goes to his total and I am also looking for places who make take a few copies to sell for us. Sorry for the blatent plug, but we want to make this work for John. Rob
  2. Hi Everyone - brilliant news about John. He is a legend. I met him on my second day of working for Macmillan. He is a lovely man with a heart of gold and nominating him for this was our way of saying 'Thank you' for doing what you do. Whatever the weather he pushes that pram, but not only does he raise money he also inspires so many people to do the same. He really is one in a million and I'd be amazed if Queen's Honours didn't happen at some point - although I'm not sure the Pram would be let into the Palace Anyway, I hope you can help me with something. Today I was with John for a launch of a very unique in aid of Macmillan. We all know that John has always walked alone, but he is going to lead a one-off walk on Sunday 17 June - Father's Day (3miles or 10miles). It's called The Sheffield Walk and we're asking people to walk with him, but it's a walk with a difference...you can wear a green wig and foam hand, and help us invade Sheffield with our own army of ‘Mad Walkers’ for the day! You can find out more here - http://www.macmillan.org.uk/sheffieldwalk I would really appreciate it if you could help to spread the word about this walk, as for every walker that takes part and raises for example £75- that's three hours of nursing care we can provide here - so it's the most meaningful miles people will ever walk. You can see a pic (sorry if link doesn't work I'm a bit rubbish at this!) of the launch photo... http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002416606162&ref=tn_tnmn#!/photo.php?fbid=263482387075646&set=a.125505154206704.27737.100002416606162&type=1&theater Thanks everyone. 3. Hi all, I've nominated John for the Olympic Torch...from what I understand it doesn't matter how many people nominate for the honour - it is one per person. However, a supporter has Emailed me and said they've set up an online petition for John which I'm sure he would be very touched by. Link is here if anybody is interested. http://www.petitiononline.co.uk/petition/macmillan-olympic-torch-lets-have-john-burkhill-fundraiser-carrying-the-olympic-torch-2012/3094 Rob - Macmillan
  4. Great idea re; petition - would anyone be willing to set this up? Rob
  5. Hi all, Came across these posts and thought I'd post a John update. His latest challenge is in two parts. He will be setting off from BBC Radio Sheffield on Friday 29 July at 9am and walking to York – a distance of 58 miles. He will arrive in York on Saturday, where he may have time to put his feet up in the evening, before entering The Jane Tomlinson Race in York, which is another 10K. Amazingly, John is even thinking of walking back on Monday. Just so you know, John has now taken part in over 854 races including half marathons, 10K runs, marathons inc. London 20 times and Sheffield half marathon every year since it began. His target is to raise £250,000 and he's determined to get there - he's just reached half way as you can see by going to Just Giving and searching for Mad Man with the Pram. Also, we are have submitted an application for John to be our Torch Bearer for 2012. Fingers crossed. And if John has inspired any of you to do something for Macmillan let me know - don't worry you don't have to do 68 miles! :-) Rob Turner Fundraising manager - Sheffield Macmillan Cancer Support
  6. Hi Scott, Did you manage to enter the three Peaks Challenge? Would be a shame if you didn't. I'll be there on the day at 5am signing people in :-) If you couldn't get around the transport problem, would you be interested in organising your own sponsored local walk with a few friends for Macmillan? Rob
  7. This years Macmillan Coffee Morning takes place on 30 September so there should hopefully be loads of coffee and cake being served up wherever you lived. Just started to look for hosts now, but last year we had over 500 so would be great to top that. Rob Macmillan Cancer Support - Sheffield
  8. Hi all, I know some of you missed out on the Sheffield Half, but if any of you are considering entering the 10K in October, Macmillan is looking for runners to enter the Race and run for TEAM Macmillan. If you're interested either drop me a message or going to the macmillan website and searching for Great Yorkshire Run I wanted to post early as if you're like me, then you'd need to start trainiing although I might might wait until after a sunny holiday :-) Rob

  10. The Great Yorkshire Run - 10K, Sheffield Sunday 9 October 2011 If you fancy doing the Great Yorkshire Run, once you've registered please Join Team Macmillan and take part in the Yorkshire vs. Lancashire running challange! With up to 10,000 runners expected to invade the city for the 10k event, entrants will be asked to pledge their allegiance to either Yorkshire or Lancashire. The winning county is calculated by the average finishing time of all runners competing the 10k course in a time of less than 70 minutes. Every entrant will be sent printed red and white roses, for them to decide which one, if any, they would like to wear on the day. So please sign up to Team Macmillan and raise money for those affected by cancer, and show your mettle in the steel city. Remember, it's not when you finish that matters...it's why. To Join Team Macmillan you need to have already secured your own place from the event organisers, then register on the Macmillan website - click on fundraising - then Running. Or call 01246 810 301 Thanks everyone and good luck with your training!!!
  11. Hi Scott, Thanks for the tip on Ben Nevis! Will let you know how easy it was once I've done it...sure my legs won't feel it was easy but I'm looking forward to it. :-) As I'm new I had to ask about the transport question, and sadly we aren't able to provide transport for people to and from the walk. I hope you can find a way around this as we really appreciate your support and would love to have you as part of this walk. Rob
  12. Hi everyone, New to the forum and to Sheffield! I'm the local fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support and we've organised a challenge event you might be interested in taking part in. Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge on Saturday 9 July. The challenge involves walkers climbing a total 2,153 metres and covering 23.5 miles up Pen-Y-Ghent followed by Whernside and finishing with the unforgiving Ingleborough. Although this walk is challenging, the sense of achievement whilst crossing the finishing line is wonderfully uplifting. Not only will you gain a fantastic personal challenge, you will also be helping change the lives of those living with cancer There is a registration fee of £15 and we'd like people entering to try and raise £191 through sponsorship as this will fund a Macmillan Nurse for a day. It's our centenary year. 100 Years of providing Support for people affected by Cancer so please get involved. You can register online at the Macmillan website or call 01925 846 764 On another I'm a keen walker myself (although I can't take part in this event as I'll be helping out behind the scenes) - but I'm hoping to do Ben Nevis later in the year so any tips welcomed!
