  1. My wife Gillian comes from the steel houses on Cairns Road. number 61. next door down was Derek Norris and further down was her uncle Jack Turton. we lived there for the first year of getting married (1971). by then the prefab bungalows across had gone.
  2. I spoke to the owner loads of times and I thought he said his name was Shah. he said he had another place on London Road which had table cloths, knifes and forks etc. they charged twice as much for the same food. he also said Laycocks paid for him to come to UK in the 60s to do work we would not do and then he worked on the buses. him and another bus working pal started the Islamabad. I used to have vegetable keema bhoona and 2 roti. never found it anywhere else but have had it made in a couple of other places. Slammer was the best. I can still see my brother-in-law running across the road with a tray of drinks from the pub opposite. great days, sadly missed
  3. I was in Molinari's ice cream shop a couple of months ago. spoke to Florence, who was serving in the shop, and she said her husband (who had his own name on his van as MacNeil) was OK considering his age. the ice cream is still as good as ever.
  4. I certainly will mention it and do my best to get you a refund!
  5. there is a C Barber at 38, 1, St Georges Close, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S3 7HJ tel 0114 275 6574
  6. yes you were in my class, this Stephen Ward !
  7. I also went to Darnall C of E from 1957 to 63, when were you there?
  8. The Fireplace shop had a yard at the top of Station Road, Darnall and all the old Yorkshire ranges were taken there for scrap. I must have smashed hundreds of these and they are worth a fortune these days - story of my life!
  9. Just discovered this topic. in the 1950s it was vogue to remove the Yorkshire range (cast iron coal fireplace with oven at the side) and replace with a tiled fireplace. My granddad used to make and fit these and for a while, his showroom was the whole of the basement in Banners on Attercliffe. his own shop was opposite the 'Horti' (Sheffield Horticultural and Floral Institute) at the top of Staniforth Road. he taught me how to make them for what good that is now!
  10. 1 of the Sheffield Nunnery shafts was located under what is now Park Square roundabout at the end of the Parkway (water pump shaft). the main shafts were off Nunnery lane which was on Manor Lane just above where Woodburn road ends now but did not go that far before. the tip had to be moved to allow the Parkway to be extended from its original start point again on Manor Lane just above Woodburn road. it is a slip road for the exit there now. the other end at that time ended at Handsworth and the field next to the roundabout is where the Handsworth Nunnery pit ponies used to graze in summer. take a look at this map http://www.sheffieldindexers.com/Links/Sheffield1890.jpg
  11. I also went to those Judo lessons in the pit canteen and the instructor was George Machin
  12. I think my wife Gillian Allsopp was in your class cos she used to talk of Mick Bradshaw and James Doherty. we met through my cousin Marie Else who was also her classmate along with Neil Hollingsworth. Neil moved to Canada in about 1980 but comes home about every 5 years or so. Marie has a stall in Crystal Peaks market. Gillian's younger brother Peter also went to SJF and I think his school pal was Patrick Malloolly (not sure of the spelling). She complains to this day about the school bus journey from Beighton that went all round Hackenthorpe and Gleadless
  13. In 1980 I took over a premises which formed the corner of Leadmill road and Suffolk road but directly behind the pub. the premises was a second hand electrical parts warehouse (more like a junk shop) and I bought it over from a man called Byron Wright (now there was a character!). one day there was a young guy came to the door and said 'can you look at our electrics next door?' well, I didn't know what was next door and he took me in to what was being converted into 'The Leadmill'. we went up stairs and there was the remains of the 'Esquire' and it just looked like it had been open the night before and everyone had just left! he then showed me the new stage they were building which was, at that time in an open courtyard. he said 'I live there' I said 'where?' he said 'there under the stage!' he opened it up and sure enough he had a bed and all his clobber! would have loved to have been at the Esquire but was just a little too young but did get to the Heartbeat above Silver Blades every week
  14. at the time of the murder, my wife (then girlfriend) were standing at the bus stop outside the tyre place (bottom of Whitby road opposite Cravens entrance). we were interviewed by the police twice but we had not seen anything. they were the same houses that were condemned due to the discovery of an old disused mine that became exposed when they excavated to extend the petrol station.
  15. I have known Sir Irvine Patnick OBE for some years and can categorically say he was mis-quoted. what was reported was unfair, inaccurate and wrong but once it is in the paper, what can you do? you only have to look at how the newspapers destroy peoples reputation on a daily basis. yes there are plenty of angry people till this day but it was nothing to do with Irvine in the slightest. for all you rational people out there he is well and as sharp as ever considering he is past 80. I had lunch with him last week
