  1. That's taking revisionism to a new level, arguing that Sheffield Steel kick-started western culture. No doubt Shakespeare will wish he'd been a steel worker rather than a playwright so that he might have left his mark on English literature.
  2. That's 6-8 scumbags who will be looking at long prison sentences. They'll be going down for carrying offensive weapons, conspiracy, GBH, wounding with intent, whatever, and possible attempted murder. I hope they get long sentences. Recently on here a few racists have been inventing stories like this to spread poison. However in this case the story is obviously true. I won't tolerate racism but anti-racists and non-whites should remember that black and Asian scum need to be dealt with effectively - that is with long prison sentences and hopefully several severe kickings. It's not as if this trash is doing the cause of anti-racism any good. They are making the streets unsafe for innocent people and causing racism with their savage behaviour. All the best to the victims and their relatives. I hope you all get justice and recover from your ordeal.
  3. So where did the people who went to church live? Or did they only build churches in out-of-the-way places in an attempt to deter the peasants from turning up every Sunday? And did the builders have to commute from miles away by horse and cart to get to the building site?
  4. Yes, cash point when you get there is usually the cheapest option. If you have to take them with you I always find the PO is the cheapest. Just don't use the banks.
  5. Don't be a prude. Unless people strip off completely and indulge in something that they should keep behind closed doors at home then there's nothing wrong with a bit of part-naturism. We get so little weather like we're enjoying now that people should make the most of it while they can. My only gripe is the number of overhanging stomachs (male and female) that get exposed, as witnessed last night outside the Norton. It was like watching a lager-drenched safari park.
  6. There's another post just started about needles off Abbeydale Road. They're slowburners. Racists start threads about crime that aren't overtly racist at first but they become so when they've grabbed people's attention. The posters are in the BNP and EDL. They just want to make racist points but the incidents they talk about are all inventions. This is one of them.
  7. Is this another of those long-running posts that will degenerate into racist abuse? There was one the other day about someone claiming to have been beaten up and run over by an Asian gang in front of CCTV and he hadn't even reported it to the police although he'd spoken to a lawyer. Yeah, right. This is supposed to be in S7 and concern drugs. The poster says it's been going on for 2 years but it's his/her first post. I suspect I know where it's going.
  8. You should try cycling over them. It's not the vehicle that gets damaged I can tell you. Some roads are alright and some are atrocious. Some roads just get patched up again and again so that even if there are no pot holes the surface is still up and down, and others get resurfaced properly. Fitzwilliam Street is a nightmare going down towards Charter Row but going up towards Glossop Road it's okay.
  9. Can you imagine the stories in the Star about parents complaining that their kids' internet access had been cut off by the blackouts?
  10. The police were expecting trouble at the student protests but I don' think they'll be expecting much this time. The average age of the council staff will be 2 or 3 times that of the students and the council workers won't be narked that they've had to get out of bed early to attend a protest or that they're missing Jeremy Kyle. Of course if the council workers decamp to Orgreave it might be different.
  11. You're better off without pre-payment. The tariffs tend to be higher and you run the risk of being cut off if you're suddenly short of money. The best thing to do is work out your usual annual bill and pay by monthly direct debit. They can adjust if you're paying too much or too little. You'll also get a discount.
  12. It hardly matters if the OP is the one who gets his hands on these kids or not. He's the one who's passed on CCTV pictures to whoever metes out the justice and is therefore part of a criminal conspiracy to commit GBH or whatever. Personally I don't blame him for wanting to sort out the little scumbags but to tell everyone in advance is to drop himself in it if the police get involved and can trace the motive for the punishment back to the attack on the cars. Best keep it to yourself next time.
  13. Don't they have to be made of glass?
  14. Greeks? The Romans said it when they were buying a second-hand chariot, but they were 2,000 years ago as well.
  15. There's an article on the case on the Guardian at; http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/2011/jun/17/student-file-sharing-tvshack-extradition. The law dates back to 2003 and so a few present Labour MPs for Sheffield presumably voted for it, the ones who voted to invade Iraq that year.
  16. Is there a system? I don't see many buskers in Sheffield. There's sometimes one near John Lewis and sometimes others at the top of Fargate. And then you get those Peruvians (I think) that bring backing tapes and sell CDs and you can hear from miles away. I've seen them, or their tribute acts, in Norway, London, France, Germany, all over. I can't say I compare other cities' buskers to Sheffield's. There's not much to compare. My preference is for classical music not because I'm into it but because I can't stand hearing someone murder a song by Bob Dylan, Bob Marley or the Beatles as so many of them do.
  17. Some post offices do them. I used the one on London Road at Highfield but it's not too close to S10. They'll ensure the photos are suitable for a passport. They don't use a machine but a camera and then print them for you to the right specifications. I'd go somewhere like that even if it's a bit out of your way.
  18. Quite possibly music by black people - reggae, soul, jazz, rap, etc. Ignore kscott2's quote above. Last May he posted the following; "PHEW I was getting worried nearly a week without a dog p00 thread. Me I love the stuff - its great esp the white ones". He's obviously full of the stuff himself. If your mates are at university then they should contact the students union. Also get them to put the word round among students to boycott the place and let the management of the club know what you're doing. The wider you publicise this, the better. Contact the local press. The Star's rubbish but it goes for human-interest stories in a big way.
  19. It's still one of the most interesting and accurate things the Star has published for a long time.
  20. Imagine what a paddle does when a rower puts it through the water. Now if you walk along the sea shore with the water up to a foot up your legs that's paddling. Think of a paddling pool and how shallow the water is. I'm amazed it's only considered a local word. I wonder what verb other people use.
  21. What about Cherie Blair? She's not unknown to like her freebies despite her very privileged circumstances. I think you'll find well-off people will try to stay well-off through any means they can - tax avoidance, tax evasion, insider dealing, etc, etc.
  22. Go to your nearest advice service and ask them to help you get the money back. Put your postcode into http://www.advicesheffield.org.uk/get-advice/find-an-advice-service. In the meantime don't pay any more and if I were you I'd let your MP know. S/he may or may not help but YW won't like MPs being told what they're up to.
  23. I've seen him a few times over the last few years, usually on or near Division Street. He always has a funny grin and false smile on his face, trying to shake people's hand. I just keep walking. I saw someone today on Norfolk Row who I thought was him - very similar anyway - doing the same kind of trick. Just keep walking. I think he's harmless but may frighten the nervous. But do keep an eye out for a Big Issue seller who was outside Tesco's on West Street last week. He was walking after people with his arms outstretched shouting if people didn't buy a copy. He even had a pitbull tied up. Nutcase.
