  1. Trouble is, I reckon they're all like that on the council, whether Labour, Tory, Lib Dem or Independents. All probably hostile to anything new or tall.
  2. It looks just like the sort of buildings that were thrown up in the 1960s and 70s, and are now being bulldozed up and down the country. At the weekend I noticed parts of these buildings and thought UGH!
  3. So the moral of this story seems to be - if you value your life, keep out of the Blue Ball!
  4. Theres only one way to make up for that - a 40-storey on the Dyson/Sheaf House site.
  5. It seems you and many more of us spoke too soon. It seems to have been rejected, and this at a time when Leeds could be getting a 52-storey scraper.
  6. And this is coming on the day when a 52-storey scraper has been announced for Leeds, which will probably be around 170 metres or 560 feet tall.
  7. Sounds like The Ball is frequented by violent scum and should be converted into a prison.
  8. And as an extra innovation, I read something about there being a proposed restaurant on the 40th floor of City One in Leeds in the Yorkshire Post. Talk about dining with a view for miles around. So City One must be 41 storeys rather than 40.
  9. Looks like Sheffield will never get out of the giant shadows cast over it by near city rivals Leeds and Manchester , and whilst 48-storey 301 Deansgate is going up in Manchester, and 32-storey Bridgewater Place going up in Leeds, and more talls in the pipeline for both cities, like 58-storey Piccadilly Tower and 44-storey Crown Building approved in Manchester, and approvals for 31-storey Globe Road and 40-storey City One in Leeds.
  10. Something that bears what you write out - just look at employment sites like Jobserve or CWJobs (Computer Weekly jobs). Did a search typing in Sheffield on CWJobs - got 95 results. Typed in Leeds and got 388 results. Also for all jobs on Jobserve - typed in Sheffield - 174 results, and for Leeds - 733 results.
  11. So far I've not encountered problems in Sheffield, Leeds, Nottingham or Manchester. To be honest, I've found Barnsley more threatening with more idiots around (despite the fact there's about 1% as many people out and about there) than any of these cities.
  12. Now if Beckham or his wife were to inadvertently stumble onto this thread, they'd come up with the impression that people are as thick as bricks in South Yorkshire. Who has the best life? Him or somebody who lives in South Yorkshire? Which is the best city to live in with the most attractions, the most affluence and the better bars and shops etc - Madrid or Sheffield? No contest. I rest my case.
  13. We hope it changes in November, and that the council aren't as bad as the magistrates, because licensing hours is yet another area where Sheffield is light years behind Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, where nearly every bar stays open till 2 and sometimes 3am.
  14. There's about four Caffe Neros in Leeds, at least five in Manchester and around three in Nottingham. Even Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield have Caffe Neros.
  15. I watched the concert on the big screen in Leeds yesterday. Great atmosphere, especially drinking outside the Cocoon bar overlooking the big screen. Can't wait for the World Cup, when there'll be an even bigger screen (around 8m x 5m) fittted in the recess above the Ha Ha bar to view the matches
  16. Leeds has 21 hotels in its city centre - with at least another six planned or under construction - and nearly all of them are top ones, and one of the planned hotels will be in the smaller (29 storeys) Criterion Place tower. If Sheffield is to attract business then it does need more hotels.
  17. Still, if that 31-storey development doesn't get built at 31 storeys or more, Sheffield will only fall further behind Leeds and Manchester (it'll still be behind, even with that building). Leeds is getting a 48-storey tower next to the railway station, and it is likely that the 41-storey Venture Tower on Wellington Street, Leeds will go ahead soon, perhaps by the end of the year (one of eight or nine 30-48 storey buildings about to go up in that city so far), whilst Manchester is getting loads of buildings going up from 35 to 62 storeys.
  18. What will determine if this new and exciting building gets off the ground will depend on demand. Is there demand for the more expensive flats on say the 25th floor upwards - in other words will people be able to pay for them? I hope there is, and that Sheffield becomes markedly more affluent with more better-paid jobs and gets more city centre facilities - and city centre facilities are what cities generally get judged upon by those wanting to live in the city centre. With the likes of Leeds and Manchester, they'll have no problems selling all the flats in 30, 40 or 50-storey skyscrapers - there are more highly-paid jobs there for starters, and plenty of upmarket bars for professionals to drink and socialise in, plus the sort of shops to buy clothing and personal items in.
  19. Just been to the Ha Ha in Leeds. Not eaten anything there, but it looks very classy inside, and as if plenty of money has been spent on it. And it opens until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights.
  20. Talking of waynettas, if Wayne Rooney started growing his hair, he'd soon start looking like a Barnsley woman.
  21. I've been to Manchester, Nottingham and Leeds several times and seen loads of cracking girls in each city. London's absolutely knockout . Sheffield isn't too bad but Barnsley is terrible:gag:. The women there are generally ugly (one of the mates says "I'm not saying there aren't any attractive lasses in Barnsley, but I've never seen one"), and not particularly friendly either, but the place where I've seen most attractive girls is Italy when I went there in 1994, and as for Barnsley, usually if you do see an attractive girl she's usually an outsider who might have gone into Barnsley for the one and only time in their lives. One attractive girl I saw there had a Geordie accent. They say girls in Peterborough (voted the bustiest in the country) and Swindon (where Melinda Messenger comes from) are nice and attractive, though.
  22. With their new bar in Leeds they'll have to think customer satisfaction matters. One of Sheffields problems is the fact that there are few decent places to eat and drink in town compared with Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham, and in those cities, customers can go to lots of other places if any particular bar fails to deliver on quality.
  23. I haven't been to the Ha Ha in Leeds, but they know they'll have to deliver the goods, as in Leeds they face fierce competition from the vast array of cafe bars, food outlets etc. With cafe bars and eateries like Hard Rock Cafe, Babycream, Nandos, Ma Potters, Browns, If, Sports Cafe, Firefly, Aire, Living Room, Slug and Lettuce, not to mention 8 Starbucks, 4 Cafe Neros, quite a few Costas, 2 Pret a Mangers, 12 or so Subways and many many more in close proximity, its gotta be good. Likewise Ha Ha in Nottingham is also faced with loads of competition.
  24. If you were looking at Sheffield, you could pick any one of 20 or so buildings for the wrecking ball (would be better to be able to pick the lot) - Candidates must be Sheaf House, Dyson House, Park Hill Flats (despite their Grade II listing), Roxy, Odeon, Scargills Castle, half the Moor, Grosvenor House Hotel (ugh), Castle Market.
