  1. Hi, I'm quite new to Sheffield, so I still have lots to learn! I'm a professional musician and I've just formed a new ensemble with young talented colleagues called the Band of Music. Here is a little about us: The Band of Music is a new group made up of established and experienced baroque musicians who wanted to get together, play beautifully the music that they love and communicate it to as many people as possible. Their members play together with all the country's leading period ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Sixteen, the English Concert, The King's Consort, The Gabrieli Consort... Plans for their first CD are already afoot. Its early stages, but we're looking for a concert venue where we can test out some repertoire and build performing experience/exposure together. Our idea is: to put on free concerts with a retiring collection in aid of a charity, or perhaps in aid of a church fund. We would hope to take some money to help cover our travel costs, but that is all (we are spread across the country, and travel is so expensive at the moment). Essentially, it would be a chance for us to develop and perform some programmes that we could then market to a paying audience in the future. If anyone has any suggestions, or if you are connected to a church that might be interested, please let me know, we would be delighted to hear from you! Thanks in advance. Tim
  2. great, thank you everyone, I'll check out some of those ideas
  3. Hi, I'm pretty new to sheffield, and was wondering if anyone knows if there is a student publication (either hard copy or online) where you can advertise services. There must be some uni students who would like to learn the cello and now would be a good time of year to find out... Thanks in advance
  4. Hi all, probably looking for 3 beds, I also need a room big enough for a music room for teaching and rehearsing, but classical so noise isn't too bad. Transport links are important, I frequently work in manchester, Leeds, York, and could do with being handy for the train station. Not that I'm picky or anything Thanks!
  5. Hi, I'm thinking of buying a house in sheffield, budget is probably up to about £200k. But I'm new in town, and I don't really know where's a good bet. Where would be the best places to look with that budget? I'm looking for a house, not an apartment, and I'd rather stay west. I really like it around Ecclesall Rd of course, but maybe that's not the best in terms of value for money. Does anyone have any good tips on where to look that I might not have considered? Thanks
  6. Hi, I have to meet some friends at Jury's Inn later and I'm looking for a good bar to take them to nearby. It needs to be open late, but I'm not looking for a club or anywhere really noisy. Any ideas? I'm new in town so don't really know anywhere yet. Thanks!
  7. * * CELLO LESSONS * * Hi everyone, I'm new to Sheffield and looking to build up some cello students in the area. I'm a professional cellist with performing experience from early music to a world tour with Sting last year, and I teach at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and Yorkshire Young Musicians in Leeds.* I believe learning an instrument should be fun and as teachers we should ensure it stays that way. I have experience in working with complete beginners through to teaching university students at both Manchester and York universities. I would love to develop a community of cellists in Sheffield that can play with and to each other in concerts! Give it a try! Prices 30 mins £15 1 hr £25 Fully CRB checked and trained in child protection. Can also help with finding an instrument if you don't have one. Email: timsmedley@gmail.com Tim
