  4. Hi there I am a mum of 2 little girls and I teach NCT classes in Sheffield. I just wanted to let you know that I am running a short antenatal course (5 weeks) in Crookes starting on the 22nd July - at the moment this course still has some spaces left. NCT courses are a fantastic way to meet other expectant parents and take some time out to think about your priorities and options. I always try to adapt the course to cover the topics you want to discuss, but I usually cover: Pain relief (natural and medical), stages of labour and when to contact a midwife, caesarean and assisted births, coping techniques (breathing and positions), choices and decisons. There is a class all about breastfeeding and we will also cover; coping with a newborn, practical babycare, emotional impact of becoming parents, postnatal recovery. Plus anything else you feel is important to you. The full price for this course is £137 per couple, with the option to pay for NCT membership on top of this. NCT is a charity and we want our courses to be open to everyone, so we offer very generous discounts off the full price for families on lower incomes. Fully discounted places start from around £14 per couple. For further info please PM me or see the website: http://www.nct.org.uk/course/17481113 Thanks for reading!

  6. Hi there Are you expecting a baby in July or August? I still have 2 spaces left on my next NCT course at Wadlsey Church Hall. It starts on the 1st June and runs over 3 Saturdays (1st, 8th and 15th June). There is also a separate breastfeeding class on Thur 13th. http://www.nct.org.uk/course/17019974 NCT courses are ideal if you want to meet other parents in your area. Classes are interactive and parent-led so you can find out about the issues that are important to you. The course will cover: labour and birth, pain management, massage, breathing, coping techniques, caesarean birth and other medical assistance, choices and decision making. We will also cover the changes that a baby will bring to your life and relationships, nappies and bathing, different approaches to parenting, safe sleep and baby communication. Full price is £170 per couple (with optional NCT membership on top) but massive discounts are available if you have a low household income. If you receive full benefits you could get the whole course for as little as £17.
  7. Hi there are some lovely playgroups at the Longley 4G centre if you want to meet some other mums there? http://www.nct.org.uk/branches/sheffield-rotherham/home-birth-support/nct-nearly-new-sales/babytoddler-and-coffee-groups
  8. It is worth getting an electric Medela pump if you are going to pump a lot. Medela sell a range of different sized breastshields (the bits that look like funnels that you put over your breast). If you get a cheap one like tommee tippee it might not actually fit your breast very well which can cause bruising and soreness. Breasts are all different shapes and sizes so it's really important to get a pump that fits you well - it is possble that you might be lucky enough to have breasts that are exactly the same size as a standard breastpump but it's equally possible that you might need a larger or smaller breastshield. I'd definitely agree that it's a good idea to get the hang of breastfeeding first of all - if you start pumping too soon it can cause engorgement and also giving babies bottles too soon can make them refuse to breastfeed. Once you have got breastfeeding going well, then it might be worth speaking to a BF support worker or an NCT BF counsellor to get information about the best times to start pumping and introducing bottles. Anyway best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and birth.

  10. Yes things are looking positive, it seems likely that this course will go ahead. There is still a month to go so we may get more bookings over the next 4 weeks, but if not it will be a nice relaxed small group with plenty of time to discuss all the topics you want to cover. I look forward to meeting you! Clare

  13. Hi Beaubell In Sheffield there are various types of antenatal classes - NHS classes, NCT classes, hypnobirthing, Lazy Daisy and yoga type classes. All of these will cover labour and birth but some of them only do very limited stuff about the baby (eg yoga - is mainly about physical skills for birth and relaxation). So you may be best going for NHS classes or NCT. I teach NCT classes and a full length NCT class will cover labour and birth and also a good range of postnatal topics such as nappies, bathing, safe sleep, approaches to parenting, breastfeeding, emotional changes, where to get support etc. At the beginning of the course the teacher will ask what the group wants to know so she can cover the topics that are important to you. We also run postnatal courses which you go to with your baby once he/she arrives :-) - and you can get info on sleeping, parenting styles, coping with crying etc For more info on the courses in Sheffield please see http://www.nct.org.uk/branches/sheffield-rotherham/courses NB the course prices vary, discounts are available for families on lower incomes and also you can pay by installments Hope this helps! Clare NCT Teacher
