This is typical of the council - accepting second best. This is why it is supposed to be the City of Sport, yet all the sporting events go to Manchester. It has an airport whose website says "Please note:There are no scheduled flights operating from this airport." A road system comparable to the Eastern Bloc. A world famous furniture shop that's turned away because a well-past it department store doesn't like it. A redeveloped canal waterfront which provides nothing but nice scenery from the windows of solicitors and other business.

The builder should have done this. If he is not working to building regulations he should be stopped. It's probably of no use to you (being in Manchester), but this company is outstanding. They take two to three weeks and everything is included in the price - including all the fire doors, and mains wired smoke alarms. The team works long hours and from my garden can see at least seven or eight of their conversions. I don't use them so can't really comment, but it is my understanding that the tram is a far superior form of transport over a bus - faster, cleaner and doesn't clog up the roads or get stuck in jams. And considering the ticket is cheaper than an equivalent bus one (ok, you are limited by the routes, but if you live on a tram route you're laughing), I think it's pretty good value.

The best dentist I've ever known is Dr Limb, Balmoral Road, Woodhouse. I'm not sure about waiting lists, but if you are willing to pay he may be able to squeeze you in. They are good, but quite expensive. If you want external storage it's much cheaper to buy your own hard drive and external USB2/ firewire case. I have a second hard drive in my PC and use Norton Ghost or Powerquest DriveImage to backup my system. That's probably the cheapest and most reliable way to go.

Whether or not the council or other city centre shops want the Ikea or not is beside the point. I know of a few people in Sheffield who have to make the trip down to Nottingham or Leeds to go, wasting petrol and time driving. My mum likes the place but doesn't have a car, so she can't get there without a lift from my sister. The council needs to remember the other side of the coin - if you're not bringing people in, you could be driving your own residents away because of the sheer lack of amenities.

The modems are very poor quality, which is why they are free. It may be a good idea to get an internal ADSL modem, or a decent Netgear router. Do you have all your ADSL filters installed correctly? I've heard of a few cases similar to yours and it's been the filters not installed that's been the fault.
