  1. Congratulations! I had blood taken at my first appointment (last May). I distinctly remember it as the teenager in ahead of me fainted at her blood test and kept me waiting nearly 2 hours for my appointment! The first midwife appointment is called the 'booking appointment' and it's basically an hour or more of questions. The midwife will ask in detail about you and your family history and carry out lots of basic checks - weight, blood pressure etc, and will then book you in for your twelve week scan at the hospital. Good luck with everything .
  2. I attend a Methodist church and I find the Methodist church, ministers, and congregations on the whole very liberal and inclusive. I can't promise but I would be shocked if you felt judged or excluded in a modern Methodist congregation. ---------- Post added 10-03-2014 at 09:38 ---------- I just saw the previous reply. I'm part of what was the Crookes Valley congregation and is currently trialling a merge with Broomhill Methodist http://www.beaconmethodist.org.uk/index.php/locations/broomhill
  3. This years Big Issue knitathon will be held on Saturday 16th November at the Methodist Church The Beacon at Broomhill, from 1.30 -3.00pm The aim is to knit 6 inch squares which will be sent to the Big Issue Foundation where they will be sewn together to make blankets. (although there is a request this year that we sew squares together in rows of 12, so sewers are as important as knitters !!) For more information see www.bigissue.org.uk/BigKnitathon The website also gives patterns for textured squares but garter or stocking stitch is fine. It's an ideal way of using up part balls of yarn. If you don't have any spare yarn there will be materials provided on the day There will also be coffee, tea , biscuits and hopefully buns for sale and all proceeds will go to the Big Issue Foundation. Last year's event was very successful and it would be great to meet up again this year. If anyone needs further information please reply or email ginger gill@talktalk.net. Thanks
  4. The Cystic Fibrosis trust has appealed for people to knit legwarmers made of natural fibres. They plan to sell them online next Christmas to raise funds. Apparently kids with CF benefit from lots of trampolining and legwarmers are ideal for this. I heard about it on BBC Sheffield a few months ago. http://www.cftrust.org.uk/pressoffice/news/stknit
  5. Thanks to those who came along yesterday. We knitted about 30 squares and raised over £70 for the Big Issue! Unfortunately we didn't crack the 25 people needed to be counted as part of the Guiness World Record attempt, but a good time was had by all.
  6. We're looking forward to the knitathon this Saturday! I should have said we have some craft activities for little children if you want to bring any along.
  7. Hi all The Big Issue Foundation is running a Knitathon this Saturday across the UK. It's an attempt to break the world record for the most people knitting at one time across the country, while raising money for the Big Issue and contributing towards blankets for those in need. We will be knitting 6 inch squares which will be sent away and made into blankets. Our small 'Knit and Natter' group are going to host a knitathon at Broomhill Methodist Church on Fulwood Road. It will be from 1.30pm this Saturday 17th November, and it's a free event open to everyone. We're expecting a mix of all ages, from students to families and pensioners. You don't even have to be able to knit, as we are happy to provide basic guidance. We have some needles and yarn, but please feel free to bring your own. Bring kids too, we will have a small craft (pom pom making) activity for the little ones. The more people the better, because we need a group of over 25 people to be present for an hour from 2pm, to be counted as part of the World Record attempt! Tea, coffee and cake will be available for a donation towards the Big Issue Foundation. Any questions feel free to message me
  8. Have you tried knitting double thickness in the toes? I'm not sure what it's proper name is but you knit one, slip one across one row / round and then slip one, purl one (or knit if it's in the round) across the next row/round. i.e. each knitted stitch is slipped in the next row/round, each slipped stitch is knit/purled in the next row/round). You end up doing twice the number of rows/rounds that the pattern states ; but you end up with double thickness fabric. Might help!
  9. Fantastic, more knitted squares would be brilliant. And bring along as many people as you can
  10. Our small 'Knit and Natter' group are going to host a Big Issue knit-a-thon at Broomhill Methodist Church on Fulwood Road. It will be from 1.30pm on Saturday 17th November, and it's open to everyone. We're expecting a mix of all ages, from students to families and pensioners. The more people the better, because we need a group of over 25 people to be present for an hour from 2pm, to be counted as part of the World Record attempt! We'll supply wool, needles and guidance to those who need it. Tea, coffee and cake will be available for a donation towards the Big Issue Foundation. Any questions feel free to message me
  11. We're having it at Todwick village hall, less than 10 minutes away over the M1.
  12. I'm getting married in a few months' time and we are going to be on a tight schedule on the day. We're getting married in the Beighton parish church and I wonder if anyone knows any particularly scenic locations we could use nearby for photographs? (I want to avoid Rother Valley Country Park on a summer Saturday afternoon!) Thanks!
