  1. My second home from the 60s until it closed. Steve and Edna were lovelly people and the food was top notch with no fuss Sheffields Mithcellin star!!!.They used to serve Yorkshire pud on a seperate plate as a starter SUPERB none of this frozen rubbish. It used to have a outside sign sayng Buters Eating House. I used to deliver the milk in the area not to Butlers but the surrounding area Butlers used the Co-Op if i remember right there was many a time early in the morning before Butlers had opened when Steve used to have a cup of tea ready for me on a cold morning.
  2. I Remember the chestnut men at the top of Snig Hill outside Harralls shop and in Pond Street at the top of the steps where the big city centre map used to be in a massive glass case. It had an index where you could press a button for the city landmarks like the town hall or the fish market ect. The chestnut men always had filthy hands like coalmen but it never stopped me eating them they smelt and the tasted lovelly in the winter weather. Happy Days!!!
  3. Went on hols to Cleethorpes loads of times but i have no recollection of a house full of little people. Where exactly was the house. Can you remember the open air swimming pool the water was like ice it was always freezing. Once saw a beauty contest there when i was about 12. I can still remember i could'nt stop looking at the ladies nipples sticking out in the freezing breeze.
  4. The shop on High Street in Ecco was a lifeline for me. Getting my maggots and going to Ecco Pond or Worborough. The shop was really little and the bloke that ran it was a real Jack Hargreaves he was always giving us tips on how and where to fish.
  5. Thats very sad she used to look after me when i was about 13 with no money. I wanted a Miracles LP and she got it me and charged me virtually nothing. I thought she was indestructable.
  6. Yes the water used to ripple when they went through. Used to fish the Sincel Drain there as well.
  7. The Wtham was a fantastic river and the scenery was spectacular to me as a young cross lad. I can still smell the steam from the trains.
  8. I used to be in Violets on a reguler basis. I usedto go in her old shop where the big Park roundabout now stands just down from the Rag and Tag market before she moved to Matilda street. She had an amazing stock of old soul imports she was great. Does anyone know if she is still with us.
  9. Can anyone remember The New Formula!! They used to pack venues incl The Black Swan and working mens clubs there must be someone with memories of the Formula. Its really good to hear that Peter is doing well and posts on the forum, he was a great player and a real character
  10. Is there any footage available of their appearance on Op Knocks. I seem to remember that John wore a long cape on the show.
  11. I can remember him well i hope he's well. does he still perform
  12. The Playboys were a really good group. The bloke on keybords was brilliant i think his name was Bobby Campbell he used to sing the Four Tops songs. I remember the first time i saw them in the Blue Bell in Hackenthorpe i was about 17 they were fantastic and i went to see them whenever i could after that. Always for free i can't ever remember putting owt in a collection for them.
  13. Yes the trains were always full. We were lucky being near Wadsley Bridge and with it being where the train left from we always got a seat, having said that further down the line if the train was full my big brother would make me stand up to let one of the old lads sit down (would'nt happen know). Can anyone remember the lady at Southery who used to sell mugs of tea and stuff like kit kats through her front window. She used to have a wooden shutter that let down into a seving hatch. Coming off the Parson Cross and seeing the scenery and space down in Lincolnshire i always said i would like to live there one day and now i do. The train track is now a cycle route which follows the old train route. It goes from a place called Harby just above Lincoln and runs all the way to boston. It is really worth a visit you can walk or cycle and see all thats left of the old stations.A good place to pick the route up is Washingborough that will cut out having to go through Lincoln town centre. There is a fantastic tearoom with old photos and memorabelia in the old station at Bardney where they play the sound effects of the steam trains. Its called the Water Railway look it up on line or go there it will bring the memories flooding back.
  14. I live in Torksey and the best BB is The Black Swan guest house in Marton about 2.5 miles from Foss and .5 mile Trent. There is a great pub bang opposite the Black Swan 01427 718878. ishing on foss can be a tough water its very clear try to fish after heavy rain or on a cloudy day. PS Loads of Pike
  15. Two mighty groups in the late 60s/70s. I think New Formula were from down south and they played the WMCS and were regulars at the Black Swan, i may be wrong but i'm sure the lead singer only had one arm. O'haras Playboys were the big thing on the clubs for years they were great, but bottled it when they got a slot on opportunity knocks. They did Gary Puckets young girl but John Ohara had'nt got the big voice he was a great singer but that was not the right song. Anyone got any stories about seeing these two great groups, sorry bands in todays speak.
  16. Nice memories of the rag boat race. My granparents lived on the ABC streets they lived at 33 Driffield Street. We used to watch from Hillfoot near to where Osbourne Mushet Tools were. Great days all for student and Sheffield charities. Also we always got a copy of the Twicker magazine.
  17. On to my 2nd wife in1997 we bought a 2 bed terrace in Hillsborough for £34,000 sold it 2007 for £127,000 bought a park home in Lincolnshire. We now are mortgage free and happy.
  18. Don't forget how Dusty started singing Island of Dreams with the Springfields. It makes you wonder how great she would have been had she lived. By comparison go to you tube and watch Judith Durham of the Seekers singing The Carnival Is Over sometime last last year to say she's well into her 60s and singing live it as good if not better than the record. Check on Helen too her voice is still superb deep and husky even if her jazzy stuff is not for me she is still on top form.
  19. Agreed Dusty could sing but she wasnt sexy with it. I remember Dusty comparing an early 60s ready steady go with all Motown artists and to be honest she could sing with the best of them. I read her autobiography and it was sad how she ended up. But she left a great musical legacy, i think her last single was son of a preacher man.
  20. I was in love with Helen too, she was number two in my top three along with Judith Durham at number three and top of the list Francoise Hardy(french bird with the sexy voice). Oh and then there was Marrianne Faithful
  21. Does anyone have memories of the early morning weekend trains that used to run full of fishermen from Wadley Bridge Station to the rivers in Lincolnshire. I was a youngster and my brother used to take me on Sundays. The trains were always full and used to run through Saxilby then through Lincoln on to the river Witham. My memories are a little hazy but i can remember Five Mile House, Bardney, Sourhery and Stixwould. I now live in Lincolnshire and would love to hear any stories of what is one of the happiest times of my childhood.
