  1. I used SM Construction in summer 2016 for a new bedroom with ensuite with a redesign of our dormer windows on the front. I am also using him again for a kitchen/dining room extension later in the year. The fact I'm using him again tells you everything. He only takes on one job at a time which means you have to wait. I'll have waited 18 months when the work starts on my kitchen in the summer. Worth it though. http://www.smconstruct.co.uk/ Simon is the chap who runs the company. Really nice bloke. The work he did on our house is documented on his website under 'recent projects', as is my testimonial. If you do speak to him, tell him John from Dronfield recommended you. Good luck
  2. The pies (and sausage rolls) found here are by some distance the best I've ever tasted http://openhost.sheffieldpieshop.co.nz/ Bit of a trek but worth it.
  3. I can't comment on Dronfield Woodhouse nor Snape Hill Crescent but I live on Hilltop Road which isn't too far from Burns Drive (10 min walk). The area is lovely, close to nice countryside and feels safe and friendly. I have lived in Dronfield for five years (previously Gleadless for 28 years) and can't speak more highly of it. From what I know (limited as I haven't lived here that long) there aren't any particularly bad areas in Dronfield. I prefer the Hilltop area more than any other but I'm obviously a little biased.
  4. Just popped into this place and I have to say I'm impressed. Their selection of lesser-known UK breweries and interesting overseas beers is excellent. They also have a decent local selection (Thornbridge, Bradfield, Barlow, Acorn etc). I picked up the following: - Mikkeller Brown/Jackie - Siren Craft Brew Limoncello IPA - Brew First Space Man (Italian brewery) - Marble Brewery Earl Grey IPA - Saison Dupont - Bristol Beer Factory Southville Hop - Tiny Rebel Urban IPA ...and six others which are now wrapped up for my brother. It's definitely a very welcome addition to Dronfield and will be my new place to go when I'm staying in and having a few bottles. Really nice friendly couple running the place too. Best of luck to them.
  5. Thanks for the reply. I'm actually an accountant and it's for one of my clients. The R&D spend is large (circa £750k per annum) so I'm wanting to bring in a specialist to get it absolutely correct. The technology behind the spend is rather complex too, so I'd prefer to use someone with experience in R&D tax credits. Do you know of any local firm?
  6. Hi there Can anyone recommend a good and preferably local R&D Tax Credit specialist firm? Thanks
  7. Sorry Zoe, wasn't having a dig! Just wanted to clarify for Set in Stone that losses can be carried back in many circumstances, not just in a company's final year. Glad we've helped him out.
  8. That's not entirely accurate. Terminal losses allow for a company to carry back losses incurred in its final accounting period to any profits chargeable to corporation tax from the preceding three year period. Therefore if Set in Stone has any profits on which a CT liability was incurred in the past three years, there is the possibility of a repayment. Ignoring terminal losses/a company in its final year, a company can also carry back losses against profits from the prior 12 months (this was extended to 36 months during 2008 - 2011). This makes far more sense than carrying losses forward because, in general, CT rates are falling, therefore relief against 'old' profits is likely to be given against profits charged at higher rates of CT. In addition, why wait for relief in the future when a company can obtain cash in the present? The only situation where I can envisage carrying losses forward being more advantageous than carrying back against past profits is if the company predicts significant profits in the future which will be charged at the main rate of CT (24%) as opposed to the small companies rate (20%) which may have been charged in the earlier year. However, this argument will become increasingly redundant as the main rate and small companies rate become ever closer to each other. Steve is absolutely correct regarding the R&D loss surrender. An 11% R&D tax credit is a good idea when cash is required but carrying forward to offset against future profits is ultimately more beneficial as the relief will be given at 20-24%. It is worth noting, however, that the 11% tax credit as opposed to carrying losses forward does increase the risk of 'unwanted attention' from HMRC on the R&D claim itself.
  9. Funny that. I've just offered a job to someone this morning who came from an agency. Excellent service from the recruitment agency, outstanding candidate, excellent role (recent graduate), generous salary and study package. Happy to pay the recruitment fee when the invoice arrives. Everyone's happy. Having worked in a Jobcentre 10 years ago, I can only imagine the quality of candidates and level of service I'd be exposed to had the vacancy been with them. I'll take the recruitment agencies (or 'parasites') any day of the week.
  10. Went here last Saturday for the final time. Very sorry to see this place go. Was a favourite of mine.
  11. Try PHD Mountain Software. Still designed and manufactured in the UK. Reassuringly expensive and worth every penny.
  12. You may want to try posting a thread on http://www.ukclimbing.com Very active forum and quite a knowledgable crowd. Quite a few Sheffield based climbers on there too who may be able to help you. Good luck.
  13. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=accountants+in+sheffield All the best. A very solid career choice.
  14. I moved to Dronfield with my wife-to-be two years ago. We live in the Hilltop area (nearest pub is the Hyde Park Inn, if like me, you navigate using pubs) . No kids, aged 28 and 24 at the time. We've been here two years and we absolutely love it. The place is friendly, the people are nice, it's quiet at night and we've not had any trouble whatsoever. Great neighbours on both sides. We have two excellent pubs within 10-15 minutes walking of our house (Three Tuns and Dronfield Arms). A decent range of supermarkets, a good leisure centre with swimming pool and gym. Transports links to Sheffield are reasonable (10mins by train which generally run once per hour). There's also a bus service which I've not used yet (train is ideal for me). We will probably up-size in a 2-3 years and we will definitely be staying in Dronfield.
