  1. Does anyone know if this is happening again any time in the near future, please..?
  2. Hi all Am looking to install something in my back garden to give us some protection from the sun (not at the minute!!!)., probably 3 x 3m, not sure on shape etc and after some recommendations, if anyone has had similar done at home or work...? I seem to remember seeing an ad for a company in Sheff that specialise in this but can't find them on the web. If anyone knows what I'm on about, please let me know! Many thanks snapper
  3. UPDATE: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/newreply.php?do=postreply&t=735060
  4. Walking to Broomhill today from Sharrow via Boots on Eccy rd... Pollards to re-open a retail shop on Eccy Road, top end, where masterchef were (briefly) and then it was a bakers/coffee shop (independent) then nowt, now a sign up saying "Pollards - soon to open" (or something similar!) thumbs up! hopefully there'll still be a great selection of coffee to buy cheers snappy
  5. I would like to know about this too! It looks like it'll be earmarked for infill resi development and I believe at present it is still designated as Green Belt. cheers Snapper
  6. Hi everyone Relatively new to the forum and to sheffield. I live in Nether Edge down near the Sharrow end and we have been listening to and - once - watching the Nether Edge Owl(s) at dusk for two years now. Can anyone confirm that there is more than one, or one pair? I used to live up at the Hospital end of Nether Edge and we used to hear one there too so I am presuming there are a few nesting in or around Kenwood House/Marriot Hotel/Rundle Road somewhere.... Any info greatly appreciated cheers Sheffsnapper
  7. Bas man, thanks for posting this info. I had seen a couple of pics of the buildings immediately adjacent to the line that diplayed "POST OFFICE" signage and was confused about how the PO ended up having an office there! It amazes me that not enough people used the station (I guess this is why it closed.?) Is it correct that Heeley was one of the few stations in the UK at the time that had the ticket office at a lower level than the platforms? cheers snapper
  8. Wow, that was an interesting read ! I personally think that this area feels very very old. The history of the area too is very odd, and it is still an odd place, if you include the stretch from the old water tower to the bottom of Soughley Lane. I was very very intrigued by the story of the training camp, the trenches on Hill 60 and Quarry Hill and the later POW camp. I find it very, very odd that part of that site is now used as a traveller's site... I always wondered what the HUGE wall was all about, now I know Apparently this site and the parts to the west and east were used as a horse-racing course. So, the reason for my post is that while I was up at Redmires yesterday in the blazing sun, I was hanging about at the sluicegate and the 'plughole' wondering a the enginnering marvel of it all (sad person that I am!). Then the strangest thing happened - I started to hear noises, music, conversation coming from inside the plughole. There was a mum and her cute baby also milling around at the same time, and I asked her, was I mad, or could she also hear music coming from the hole? And she said yes, she could hear it, and yes, it was more than a little strange. I suggested we'd been transported into an episode of "LOST" and she laughed at this. But we both felt a bit uneasy. Of course, I am sure there is a perfectly plausible explanation for this, I note that the 'Works' associated with the reservoirs are close by and I presume there is a tunnel from these works to the area at the base of the retaining wall for the upper dam (and therefore also close to the base of the plughole). How deep is it? Has anyone climbed in? I fancy having a go, but my partner says no way! It was very eerie... Then we walked up to Stanedge Pole and scared ourselves in the woods when we stumbled out of the trees to be met by a sheep coming down the track from Stanedge Lodge. Does anyone live there now? It looks like it should be owned by the people that own the plantation - Forestry Comm. I presume...? What a BLEAK place to live 24/7 - Googlemaps shows a trampoline in the garden so I presume it's occupied... Fascinating stuff guys!!!!! I look forward to people's response on the singing plughole thing... cheers Snappy x
  9. Hi guys I'm new to the forum, and have been living in Sheffield for 2 years now. I am an urban historian and photographer and my favourite pastimes are climbing and walking. in trying to dig up some info on the old Cricket Pitch in Stannington I came across this string, which really interest me. In my experience with 'place', it doesn't seem to matter what the map/local authority/bus companies, Ordnance Survey or even Her Majesty's Royal Mail think. I would say (subjectively) that place and place-names are what the local people deem important. That is to say, folk from the same physical geograhpical area are entitled to say they live wherever they want to call home. For example, some folk living in the local authority housing in this area we're talking about here would say they live in Liberty Hill (as per the OS maps), while some would say they live in Woodlands View, and some would say they live in Stannington, and some would (maybe?) say Rivelin. Remember, it all depends on the context of the conversation you're having. If you're describing to a non-Sheffielder where you live you might say Stannington, but speaking to a person from Sheffield you might say "I live on Deer Park Road" or "The Deer Park Estate" (as examples; I'm not sure the Deer Park estate actually exists!). I suppose what I'm saying is that place and place-name is a matter of personal choice and is therefore entirely subjective and always an area for heated - progressive - discussion! cheers!
