  2. Hope there's some dripping cakes or I may have to nick some from t' Legion, Thursday. (Quiz neet). Looking forward to friday's reunion
  3. Next Saturday's Star are doing the article about Grimesthorpe in the Retro feature.
  4. Hi John. Welcome to the threads. It,s good to keep in touch with people from Grimesthorpe. Some people I know, Some I don,t Know. But we laugh in the good times and we share the sad times. Im sure there will be plenty of people at Steve's funeral next Friday. On a happier note there are usually 2 Grimesthorpe reunions at the Ball Inn allegedly the last Friday in March and the last Friday in October.I'll be in touch, keep checking the threads. Once again welcome to the threads, I know Steve got a lot of enjoyment from it.
  5. Some very sad news in the Sheffield Star tonight. The announcement that Stephen Highfield has passed away. Ex Grimesthorpe lad and contributor to the threads. I grew up with Steve through Owler Lane Infants School, Grimesthorpe Junior School and Owler Lane Secondary School, being in the same class for many years. He is on the school photos on pages 204/205. Any one who knows him will recognise him We both went to Wesley Hall Methodist Church and the youth club and concert party. Steve was always full of fun and clowning about. The concert party rehersals were an entertainment in themselves with him around. After church services on Sunday nights, like all good Methodists we all went down to the Ball Inn for "supper" I havn't see Steve for many years but I spoke to John Dale, his brother-in-law on many occasions Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Janet, his wife, and all his Family and friends
  6. Brian's team name was The Sermon Sleepers (can't think where that came from) Some of the other team names as of 1968, were "Pilgrims, Philistines, Corinthians, Petre's Angels, Romans, Holy Terrors, Sine Nomine, Charioteers, Righteous Bros., Numbers, Exodus. That was the old Church Bowling League, made up of teams from Wesley Hall Grimesthorpe Road, Petre Street, Hatfield House Lane, Burncross and Mount Pleasent Methodist chuches. The league is still in existance today but under the name The Friendship League. I'm led to beleive that it is the country's Longest surviving bowling league, It's about 44 years since it was formed. Nowadays there are only 6 teams still bowling, including Linda, My wife. Brian Gill still bowls, as far as I know he is the only original mmember still bowling. Mike McDonald being another of the bowlers from the early years of the league. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to all his family and friends.
