  1. Don't know where you could buy these in Sheffield at uber short notice ie tomorrow. But they are on amazon and ebay at very short notice. BTW very good investment. We had two packs of Copags which lasted almost 4 years in our poker club
  2. Was it this documentary? http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=3dc_1190562978 Bad picture quality here but still great TV. Gary Bushell is a Muppet. Some things will never change eh?
  3. Having a broken ankle I've not had a chance to see the barriers etc in all their glory. But looking at various images of the city centre over the last few days on friends FB pages I was struck by the symbolism of it all. Liberal Democrats - The Party Under Siege
  4. You are right busman. Journalists will only generally cover stories which they think are newsworthy, depending on material at their disposal e.g. it's generally out of the ordinary This is to protect the newspaper against libel proceedings. The more you can narrow down the identity of the felon concerned, the less likely someone of the same name can sue you. In criminal proceedings...Age, address and other particulars are published to avoid 'identity confusion'. Anyone, present at a trial, is allowed to report certain personal details of the accused/guilty [if OVER the age of 18]under the principle of 'absolute privilege.' They might... but equally they might not. The law assumes anyone can attend in person to see justice dispensed. Getting details over the phone is a bit haphazard. If you are a victim of crime the police should really let you know what happened in court. If you don't get any joy through Her Majesty's Court Service ...get onto the cops. If you were the victim then you will have a crime number to refer to, named investigating officer, family liaison officer in serious cases.
  5. I think the 'contemporaneous reporting' clause in contempt of court legislation only pertains to 'active' proceedings. If the newspaper solely uses this column to give a round-up of convictions (therefore cases no longer 'active')....yes it's lazy...but probably kosher.
  6. If you look on the back of the V11 renewal reminder it says "If you apply online in the last few days of this month you will not be committing an offence if you do not display a tax disc for the first five working days of the next month." Presumably the assumption is your disc will have arrived by post within these five working days.
  7. Not a planner's fetish. Developers employ architects who have this current fetish. Planners have minimal input in this kind of thing. To be fair they did kick up a stink when that horrible beige/brown cladding started going up on the St Paul's tower...but that was more on the basis this was a landmark building and said cladding was a huge departure from the stylish sleek shiny edifice originally promised. Have to say I agree about this cladding though. Not exactly classic design and will date very quickly (and fade etc). Looks a bit 'Play School' to me. Jessop development near Hendersons is a good example of this.
  8. I can't help reading a thread like this without thinking about David Aaronovitch's book "Voodoo Histories:The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History" Amongst other things he tries to characterise common features of conspiracy theories. Some interesting quotes "Conspiracists are always winners. Their arguments have a determined flexibility whereby any new and inconvenient truth can be accommodated within the theory itself. So, embarrassing and obvious problems in the theory may be ascribed to deliberate disinformation originating with the imagined plotters designed to throw activists off the scent." and.... "belief in the conspiracy makes you part of a genuinely heroic elite group who can see past the official version duplicated for the benefit of the lazy or inert mass of people by the powers that be. There will usually be an emphasis on the special quality of thought required to appreciate the existence of the conspiracy. The conspiracists have cracked the code, not least because of their possession of an unusual and perceptive way of looking at things. Those who cannot or will not see the truth are variously described as robots or, latterly, as sheeple — citizens who shuffle half awake through their conventional lives." ..and finally... "A final polish is given to the conspiracists' illusion of authority by the use of what is imagined to be secret service or technical jargon, as though the authors had been in recent communication with spies or scientists. Interesting words and phrases include "psyops" (short for "psychological operations"), "false flag," and more recently "wet disposal," meaning assassination." Any of this sound familiar folks? Nice little write up here http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123127032
  9. I use T Mobile Internet dongle. Signal fell-off really badly a few hours ago. Then fell to nowt. Then in last hour it's come back to full strength again. I'm assuming there was some kind of outage.
  10. Well I have to say, after giving up on this here forum for a month (for mental health reasons), when I read the thread title I thought it was the usual bozo front post from a BNP wing-nut. Imagine then my surprise, dear readers, when it turned out this conversation has actually been conducted in a light-hearted and entertaining fashion. A great reminder that not all posters on SF are a bunch of knuckle-scraping misanthropic morons. God I've just realised I'm actually letting a chink of negativity into my post...after a few seconds of logging on!! Stupid boy!! I've been brutalised by SF. Anyway...keep up the good work chaps. Carry on Wilson...and put that away Pike!!
  11. "Last time we had snow grit box at the bottom of my road was full of household refuse...dumped by some knuckle scraping Neanderthal whose wheelie bin was full. Think I'll take a peek again. I wonder what I will find!! Just been down and ....well.....the same bags of rubbish are there" Well that's my post to this forum on 2nd Feb 2009 I have asked the Council on numerous occasions to re-fill the grit bin at the bottom of my road since then. The result...nothing. The same tired old bags of refuse are still there as of now (2010) You see my house, like many others in this fair city, is situated upon a street with a bit of a gradient. Not a very steep slope it has to be said.... but the road is busy enough and steep enough to create havoc. During the last lot of snow various numpty motorists thought my road was passable...but the screaming over-revved engines and the smell of melting clutch plates suggested otherwise. We had the cops round when 3 cars got involved in an unholy mess... dancing on ice. Took 2 hours to shift 3 cars. Did the local constabulary shut the road down on safety grounds? I think you know the answer! I would grit the road myself, however this does rather require a supply of the stuff. Despite the valiant efforts of the road gritters on our major routes during Jan 2010...I am still waiting for the grit bin refill I asked for a year earlier. Am I being ungrateful or outrageous in thinking the following ......waiting a whole year for a grit bin refill is NOT acceptable Huh? Really??
  12. Cabinet member for Children's Services and Lifelong Learning is Cllr Andrew Sangar. Big decisions on Education would be generally be made by the Council Cabinet. However, these decisions would be informed by/scrutinised by the Children and Young People Scrutiny and Policy Development Board Details for this board can be found here http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/council-meetings/scrutiny/childrenandyoungpeople
  13. I use Cross Country everyday to get to and from Leeds....same line. In terms of reliability pretty good. Maybe 1 or 2 seriously late every month. Such trains usually get priority when it comes to log jams. Any hold-ups usually down to scrotes nicking copper cabling. If cost of fuel is equal to train fares I'd always get the train. You can relax, do some work or have a kip. In the car....loads of stress due to crap drivers and no chance to chill out before the rigours of the day.
  14. Love the avatar. You are WORTHY OF LAUDATION. 99.99% of the fishes in this particular pond probably won't know why I'm typing these words. Not one to go off-topic but couldn't help it. That's the way we all go! Oh and Starchitect probably deserves the SF award for the most well observed, objective and internally balanced post of the year. By the way - did you know 99% of SF posters give the rest a bad name?
  15. I too thought it was devoid of much content. Moffat packed 300 percent more storyline into the shorter format during 'Blink' (the one with the weeping angels) Actually it took quite a lead from Carpenter's remake of The Thing...especially when one water zombie was pumping water into the "new recruit" water zombie. My 10 year-old son thought this episode was 'sick' and was genuinely scared by it at times. Family tradition heh heh. However Dr Who is primarily for kids...and this had the big scare factor while still serving it's real purpose...to kick off a story arc regarding the mental degeneration of the 10th Doctor and the inevitable regeneration that is to come. The fact the Doctor had no answers to his moral dilemmas in the episode, was indecisive, made all the wrong decisions etc was very interesting. Such flakiness usually only comes AFTER a regeneration. So Davies is playing this back to front. Usually a regeneration follows an heroic, selfless alomst suicidal act to save the world...not some state of internal collapse. My Prediction: The 10th Doctor will plough through the Xmas 2-parter in the same vein of dysfunction up until some key moment where he'll atone for these weaknesses by saving the Universe...but only when it's too late for him (and possibly a.n.other...) Looking forward to see how they do the regeneration though... Knock four times on the ceiling if you want...er... the Master
