  1. donated. do you know how much will be need to buy the scooter for Tina. Also as Tina is a retired nurse there may be a charitable organization to help ex NHS employees in times of need.
  2. This is just to say a massive thank you to, in particular, the big-hearted customers and staff and managers at The Royal Standard pub on St Mary's Road, Sheffield. They are donating and distributing many hundreds of Advent calendars for food-banks and other good causes. And thank you in general to all you lovely people who donate to food-banks, especially in winter and even more especially at Christmas. It's shameful that, in such a wealthy country as ours, people should still have to fall back on food-banks. But - having collected about 170 calendars from the pub for the amazing Grace food-bank, based at Lowedges, and for a (very) special school for children with disabilities, I know that even such a small thing can bring a little pleasure into a child's life, even if only for a short time. No, the food-banks are not the answer, but they deal with life as it is, not as it should be. So please keep giving and fund-raising for good causes. It shows just how special the majority of people in this country are.
  3. last year we 'rented' a living tree from Heeley City Farm, we watered it every few days and this year we have been informed that we can have the same tree again, and a bit bigger I presume. the tree kept it needles and we were very pleased with it. The cost was £25, would recommend Heeley Farm.
  4. This is a lovely idea. I'm collecting some for distribution by food banks, but to give some to the refuges would make a big difference to those kids.
  5. Hi Bluesbrother We do some work with the Grace Food Bank at Lowedges, have you had any contact with them, if not we can contact the organisor and get back to you. Thanks for your generosity.
  6. Just got scammed by a guy (same one?) today, Tues Oct 14, in Sheffield city centre - on St James' Street, behind Lloyds Bank on Church St. I was driving when he flagged me down and said his car was parked along the way but wouldn't start. He didn't want a parking fine but was 80p short of a parking ticket. I was suspicious but, thinking the best of people, coughed up... though I did ask him where his car was. "Just at the end there." When he walked off down the side of the Cathedral, I drove round on to Campo Lane and saw him disappearing along Hartshead Square towards Angel Street. Traffic meant I couldn't follow - hey-ho. So if a shortish, fat-ish, balding guy (in my case he was wearing a mid-brown leather-type jacket, black trousers and walked with a limp) asks you for money... tell him you're reporting him to the police. Which I did nearby. And the officer couldn't much care less that a conman was operating on Sheffield's streets, even if taking only small amounts of cash.
  7. we went last night and found it a bit of a mixed experience really, we had two sharing platters between 5 of us (it was the right amount of food) most of the meat was really good but the turkey leg was very black on the outside and inedible on the inside, I did point this out to the waitress and she informed me it was because it was barbecued ! I thought that drink prices were expensive ie £2.50 for a half pint of Chiron and £2.50 for a jam jar of Pepsi. The puddings were kind of thrown together, my grandson didn't like his and the waitress did deduct it from the bill, which was nice. A lot of other people in the restaurant were having burgers which looked very tasty. We enjoyed the evening, we had a very attentive waitress and most of the food was good but I don't think I would go back, not my kind of restaurant really but can see why it would appeal to some. Some very good blues music playing which added to the experience. We had thought of going to Cosmo instead but having read some of the reviews glad we chose Smoke.
  8. I don't know whether or not the Police have a duty of care but what really surprises me is the attitude of some people who have posted on this forum. polski behaved in a very public spirited way, which he needn't have done, and some posters seem to believe that he should have left this lad, maybe to be killed on the road or cause a serious accident where others could have been injured. polskis actions were humane and kind, some people should follow suit.
  9. Bistrot Pierre on Ecclesall road have gluten free and vegetarian options, they also serve meat so could provide an answer to all your requests.
  10. Thanks for that information Mr Bloom, I didn't realise that was the reason for the lights, it is good to pass on facts like this using the forum, sorry that other users don't understand that.
  11. Tobi should come back, makes me laugh and we all need that first thing in the morning.
  12. Sure it will continue to be a good restaurant. Alfredo is very experienced and a very nice man. Deserves to do well.
  13. We ate there yesterday for the second time. They are now doing a 2 course set lunch of either bruschetta or soup and a full size pizza for £7, what a bargain. All our food was excellent and the service was very attentive and friendly. The restaurant was quite busy and the majority of the customers appeared to be Italian, which must be a good sign! We had the 2 course lunch, a glass of wine each and expressos, all for £24. Will be going back.
  14. 4 of us had lunch there yesterday and it was delicious. We had 6 tapas which were actually lovely anti pasti, all homemade, we then shared two pizza slices and had 4 coffees, all for £20. there was homemade tiramisu on offer but we didn't have enough time. The service was charming and efficient. I really hope they do well it is such a great addition to this part of town.
  15. I love these pics, I met my husband in the courthouse 35 years ago when it was still functioning as both sheffield magistrates' and crown courts, we were both working there I hasten to add. The place was quite beautiful in those days, sad to see it as it is now but the pics are great.
