  1. There is something wrong with that crossing. It is very confusing. Where the traffic filters on to one side of the road behind the tram gates people don’t realise which direction the traffic is coming from and step out in front of traffic coming from the barracks direction because they assume it is two lanes of traffic all coming from the Middlewood Rd direction rather than traffic flowing in opposite directions so they step out thinking the road is clear. Yes it would be sensible to wait for the green man, but people don’t. And that crossing is dangerous because there is a death or serious injury there every few months. In comparison to other crossings without the traffic filters that is a hell of a lot. So yes, that crossing is dangerous. ---------- Post added 16-06-2018 at 15:49 ---------- Was he elderly? It frequently does seem to be elderly people who are hit there as the crossing confuses them.
  2. If they’re also adding a few extra shops and parking I am in favour. As long as we get something back like! Wish they would put some flats in the barracks though, liven the shops up down there and get a bit more custom in. It could be really nice there if they smartened it up a bit.
  3. I saw this and I thought it meant flats above the Hillsborough barracks. That would be a good idea and that shopping centre needs it, it’s desperate for footfall. Not sure it’s a good idea at the exchange.
  4. This is England and all the follow ups?
  5. Yeah, but your boss not regularly emailing you to tell you how to think and vote is a bit more sinister than isolated issues.
  6. Worked at and attended both. Sheffield Uni is the best academically but has really fallen down the ranks and has problems at the moment. It has a Vice-Chancellor who draws a humongous salary and has fabulous conditions but it presiding over staff with increasingly poor conditions like fixed term contracts and less than stellar wages. Yet apparently he still feels he has the right to regularly email all his staff lecturing them on the issues of the day and telling them how to vote in elections and referenda. It got a poor rating in the teaching awards and IMO a lot of lecturers view themselves as researchers first, for whom students are an inconvenience to be avoided when possible. It’s administratively dreadful and impossible to get anything done. Hallam on the other hand is not as good academically. There are a lot of less academic students so learning progressing it bit more slowly and can be side tracked plus it tends not to fly off into the heights of intellectualism (which is sometimes a good thing). But the teaching is good and most of the teaching staff (and other staff) see students as the centre of the Uni and genuinely care about their well being and achievements. It’s administratively well run. Sheffield tends to have wealthier, cooler students who are also much <removed> and less friendly. Hallam’s students are less well off and cool, but much warmer and approachable. Plus you are less likely to be politically bullied or pressured at Hallam or pushed into conforming with a dominant political agenda in the student body which you will be at Sheffield, by staff as well as students. I far prefer Hallam as you might have guessed. ---------- Post added 26-04-2018 at 08:26 ---------- Oh, and the Chinese students are incredible. Hard working, friendly, polite. Might take them some time to settle in, but they get there and do wonders for our economy whilst integrating without many problems. ---------- Post added 26-04-2018 at 08:28 ---------- Oh, and the Vice Chancellor screws over his poorest paid staff while he gets a massive salary but is a proud lefty. Says it all really.
  7. 90% of the litter around here is caused by those ridiculous paper recycling boxes with no lid so the paper blows all over the street.
  8. It’s still there awaiting recovery so def City Rd now. Poor little lost unloved ambulance. I might adopt it. ---------- Post added 22-04-2018 at 09:46 ---------- Just incase anybody is interested, it was finally ticketed and then immediately moved. It was obviously a privately owned ambulance thinking they’d get away with it because the wardens wouldn’t ticket an ambulance.
  9. That's a stupid answer, I've had the same experience with one parked on Blackstock Road for over four hours, they were only to pleased that someone had took the trouble to report it. Sure you did. Never heard of anyone losing an ambulance before.
  10. Because they have more important things to do? Turns out it’s a private ambulance awaiting recovery. Don’t understand why it’s not been ticketed.
  11. I can’t think of any other reason. It’s been there before the weekend, so surely it would have been picked up by now if it was broken down? The ‘resource’ has been sat there doing nowt for nearly a week.
  12. It’s on one of the bends towards the bottom just before Ripley Street. Been there since before the weekend and it doesn’t look decommissioned. I assume the drivers don’t take them home and park them outside their gaff all week. I wondered if it was a traffic calming measure as it’s forcing all the traffic coming downhill to slow down as it goes to near enough one lane. Just wondered if anyone knew that was a thing that happened...
  13. What’s the link for Sheffield Online? Can’t get it from google.
  14. I saw him once in Paris donkeys years ago. Didn’t approach him as he had his son with him and I don’t think it’s fair to interrupt kids time with their parents just because they’re famous. He had a baguette and a bottle of wine and his son was in a vintage pram. Met him once in London at the Astoria where I checked his coat in, nice guy to chat to. My Dad worked for the London Institute which St Martins is part of and remembers him as a well liked student. Funnily enough I’ve never met him in Sheffield or met anybody who has, which is weird seeing as we’re both from here.
  15. Fairly sure I know her and her Dad is Indian from a Hindu family.
  16. Immigration officers were involved in the raid so probably not going to be called John or Dave. The main issue with race in grooming was that it was not being dealt with because of the race of the perpetrators. Given these raids seem to be taking place rather than cover ups happening I would hope that this would show this issue is being overcome.
  17. I've noticed recently that I have not been receiving letters sent from the Hallamshire? All my other mail is arriving fine so not a problem at my end. But I am regularly receiving reminder calls (and the odd reminder letter) from the hospital chasing me up about appointments for which I have not received a letter. It's for more than one clinic and more than one family member. This makes me think that the problem is at their end and letters are not going out properly from their mailroom. Anybody else experiencing similar problems?
  18. You said it had frightened 'them' off. 'Them' being international students. The largest contingent of whom are Chinese. It's also been brilliant for exports which is key for South Yorkshire and should bring us more and better paid jobs. I'm not too concerned with the fall of the pounds effect on cost of living. It was an illusion which meant we were paying less for things than they were worth. I have found shopping around and in season ameliorates a lot of it. I can live without salads in winter.
  19. And tell me please, how has Brexit frightened the Chinese? Which is where most of our international students live? On the contrary, the falling pound has made our courses and the cost of living here considerably cheaper and more attractive for ALL non-EU students and I'm sure will see even more of them coming. ---------- Post added 12-01-2018 at 11:01 ---------- This is absolute rubbish. There was a spike in reporting via one method (online) which can quite possibly be put down to post referendum hysteria as there was not a corresponding rise in convictions. Even if it was a genuine spike, the police where very clear it was no different to those seen after other major national events and died down to normal levels very quickly. So your presentation of this as some sort of sustained epidemic is absolute nonsense. ---------- Post added 12-01-2018 at 11:20 ---------- I voted out. I love our overseas students and think they bring great benefits to our city. I also think Chinese investment in our city is doing great things. I'm really pleased that the drop in the pound will have made us even more attractive as a study destination and I hope our future trade deals mean we will be even more attractive to the Chinese and other countries as an investment proposition.
  20. Checked stop hates page and there is nothing the reply relates to. ---------- Post added 21-12-2017 at 14:38 ---------- If they'd made a tweet like that about victims of, say, race hate crimes, would you be quite so chill?
  21. They might be right wing but the people they are mocking are not. The tweet is also obviously structured to be facetious. ---------- Post added 21-12-2017 at 14:31 ---------- It's not in reply to @stophate. They just cc'd them in because apparently pointing out SYP facilitated abuse for years is 'hate'
  22. Just thought I would put this out there as I think all us Sheffielders should be aware of what our taxes are going to fund. Someone put up a post on Twitter making reference to police arresting the parents of abuse victims if they tried to protect them from grooming gangs. SE Sheffield NP responded by putting up a facetious 'Ok. Will do. Thanks.' reply. Considering they did exactly that for years isn't it pretty shocking we are paying someone to post mocking it? Link below. Contains bad language so don't look if easily offended. https://archive.is/0x2aH
  23. That Syrian lad Yahya with all the chocolate in his bag got nicked after the attempted bombing at Parsons Green and he turned out to be totally innocent. The guy who really did it used his ID to buy bomb equipment because he'd once lived in the same foster home. I suspect in this case there is probably guilt somewhere, but sometimes other people get sucked in because they visit certain addresses or have lived with certain people.
  24. I'm from London so I'm aware of those clubs. If you mean the actual gentlemans clubs on Pall Mall, no they have very little of that sort of activity. If they do it's very well hidden and certainly not tolerated by management. The equivalent sort of place in London would be somewhere like the Fridge bar in Brixton or various dives in Clapton. And you wouldn't get MPs openly bragging about going out in them either. Not if they had any sense, which O'Mara clearly doesn't. Look, it's not about being 'in touch'. MPs create laws which send people to prison. They say some things are wrong and deserve censure and create the laws which do that. For an MP to take on a job which means they are responsible for creating those laws and the oversight of the organisations which enforce them, then boast about somewhere which is pretty well known for flouting a good few of those laws is hypocritical and stupid. You can't be part of something which sends many people to jail for doing things you are perfectly happy to overlook and tolerate in your personal life. ---------- Post added 27-10-2017 at 22:49 ---------- Yes. Exactly. It's not okay wherever they do it. But with this guy it's much more about his lack of judgement than anything else.
  25. I think they meant they wanted them to be in touch with ordinary working people like nurses, steelworkers, cleaners, builders. Not speed dealers, rent boys and fences. ---------- Post added 27-10-2017 at 15:13 ---------- Not that I have anything against Dempsey's. I've had some wonderful evenings there. But I am certainly not fit for public office.
