  1. Maybe pick up some yak trax or similar (rubber grips that fit round shoes) and then do whatever route you'd normally do? I've worn mine for 5 milers and such and it doesn't feel any different running in them, except you don't slip! That would be my suggestion as all the pavements here are icy and the alternative is running on the road, which is hardly safe.
  2. Its the classic Sheffield Forum "route to an answer": Sensible question asked Unnecessarily confrontational response immediately given Circuitous patriotic debate Reference to Hitler Answer reached This was a comparatively efficient thread though as: 1.We got to an answer 2.No reference was made to Islam 3.No reference was made to EGGS BENEDICT 4.No one said they didn't like Toby Foster
  3. I've just been offered a gig there, so something must have changed!
  4. Hey up mate. Best places round here are up toward Scarborough. Cayton Bay does board and suit hire, has showers and stuff and I think they do lessons. Also a good campsite just near.
  5. I don't think thee are any anymore (there used to be Kumquat Mae in Abbeydale Road - though I never really liked it). Blue Moon is good as a cafe but it's very much a cafe not a restaurant. The Riverside has a regular vegan food night arranged by Make No Bones vegan catering, who I believe are looking to set up something permanent but haven't yet. So Pure On Raw or there are loads of good veggie options to be had in the various places down London Road (obviously and elsewhere, but the range of international restaurants which better represent vegetarianism seem mainly focused there).
  6. Try the closed Facebook group "Only rockabilly musicians wanted" - join that page and post up what you're after. You're very likely to do better than you would on here. If Steptoad's not busy in other bands at the minute though, he's a top double bassist.
  7. Its a shame you're pro as my band and my old band would probably both be all over you trying to get you to join! Got a mate who wants to improve his bluegrass fiddle playing so I'll let him know about your site
  8. Thinking on (and again, no idea idf there's one at Meadowhall as I've only ever been twice), I'm pretty sure H&M do 32/36 as well if Levis are too steep. Good luck anyway
  9. 90% sure that Levis stores carry that waist/leg combination. Don't know if there's one in Meadowhall though I'm afraid
  10. Thanks Farhad. Particularly good to get a pretty positive opinion from you as I know both from here and from people I know who've come to train at yours that you know your stuff! Reckon I'll get myself down there and see if I can remember how to throw flashy kicks and if my legs still bend that way...!
  11. Due to various reasons (injuries, fatherhood, work) I've had to jack in the martial arts stuff I was doing but there's a TKD class in Crookes that I could get to and would probably be involve a lot of similar techniques to some of the WAKO kickboxing syllabus I did many years ago. Just wondered if anyone had any (informed, ideally!) opinions of DS Taekwondo who train at the Wesley Church up Crookes. Its run by David Shillabeer, I believe. Appreciate there are myriad good schools for kickboxing, TKD, muay thai etc in Sheffield and I'd love to be able to train at them, but I can only manage really specific hours, training session durations and stuff because of work, bedtimes, location, etc, so suggestions of alternatives aren't really what I'm after, just views of anyone who knows anything about the school. No disrespect to anyone involved in the school by asking for opinions, by the way, but as I don't know much about TKD it makes sense to gauge others' views as well as coming along to check it out myself. Thanks
  12. Don't know where the Walkley Gym is, but I go to Maxx Fitness sometimes. Really cheap and you don't have to be a member, got about 6 running machines, some concept 2 rowers and about 6 cross fit machines, then an array of (pretty old, but functional) machines, a pulley thing (don't know what they're called), smith press, big free weights area, abs area and a punchbag in its own space. It's friendly enough and not usually a problem getting at whatever you want to use, except maybe the smith press. If you want to lift stuff and do a bit of cardio, its spot on.
  13. I have a reasonably big building job involving rotten floor joists that needs doing and need quotes from reliable, insured builders, but don't know any other homeowners to get recommendations from. Anyone got a genuine recommendation for a firm they've used? The recommended tradesmen thread in Property & Housing is either explicit or thinly veiled adverts, so if it seems like I'm posting in the wrong place, that's my reason! Thanks
  14. The gent who leads the tastings at the Blake, and the Sheaf View, and also who writes some or all of the whiskysheffield blog is a guy called Jeff - jeffdrinks on Twitter. If he's free and up for it, get him and a room and you're sorted. He knows his stuff, whether you're talking scotches, bourbons or whatever.
  15. Sorry you've had a duff experience with the forum. I have to say though, my experience has been different - I've joined two bands on here, one I left after a year and a bit, one I'm still in, I've been offered gigs and I've found cool gigs, bands and festivals to check out. Having looked at your post re: gigs I'd make two suggestions: 1.I don't know what kind of music you do from that post. That's pretty crucial as it depends what type of promoter would be interested. I wouldnt expect anyone to reply with a serious gig offer unless I could point them to some tracks online. With the ease of home recording nowadays, its not really a barrier. 2.I've never seen anyone have much success coming on here asking for gigs. People sometimes come on asking for bands, replying to them's far more likely to get you booked. If you just say "here I am, I want a gig", it kind of feels like you're trying to put the effort of getting you gigs onto promoters when really its down to the band to do the legwork until you're well enough established that gigs find you. Honestly not being smart or having a go, just some advice based on posts I've seen on here that might bring you a bit more success. I would add I have had my time wasted by a couple of people on here, so I'm not saying you don't have a point in some cases! I've probably done it too though...
  16. I play in two bands that fit that bill. One is a duo playing the darker end of old country stuff (couple of tracks at https://www.facebook.com/TheWildSonsOfGentlemen) and the other a 5-piece playing a mix of traditional bluegrass covers and newer takes on it (Steeldrivers etc). I can't point you to any tracks as yet but we're due in the studio shortly. Both bands are pretty new but have already made their bones live and have quite a few gigs booked around Yorkshire in the next few months. Get in touch if you want to know any more, otherwise best of luck anyway!
  17. The Wild Sons of Gentlemen would love to support anything of the more country/americana stuff that passes by the Greystones. We're a two-man outfit comprising one multi-talented fella on guitar, vocals, harmonica and such and a one-trick-pony on double bass. Songs range from a bluesy, country feel to raucous slap-bass driven honky tonk anthems, from the cold-blooded murderer to hopeless drunk to the card player risking it all on a bad hand. We also do a few covers from Hank's "I Saw The Light" to jazz classic "St James Infirmary Blues" and some old-timers like "Rabbit In The Log". We're on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheWildSonsOfGentlemen or you could always catch us at the Washington on the 13th.
  18. I'd just chime in on this one that Chi Sau, as I understand it, isn't really meant for practical application in combat - its a training method. Ip chun's quite clear on this in one of his books where he describes it as "an exercise, a training process, and from it one should learn something - and I don't mean how to knock down one's opponent. Chi Sau should be regarded as a bridge between forms and free-fighting". Appreciate Ip chun's not the definitive Wing Chun source though. If generally you mean why Wing Chun isn't seen in the cage, I think there's a different kind of technique applicable in that scenario to on the proverbial street, though I'm sure many would disagree. From what I see, cage fighting is generally becoming less a mish-mash of arts as it once was and is more homogenized into its own adaptive yet quite consistent style (to the extent you see "MMA" classes everywhere now). But I'm no expert. Dave - Sorry to have carried on replying to the off-purpose bit of the thread. What you're trying to arrange sounds great, and if I were further along with my Wing Chun I'd be up for it, but I've just come to it recently (also learning from Richard) and have a fair bit to learn before I get into Chi Sau.
  19. There's been a couple of attempts to get something like this together over Sheff Forum in the past, I believe. I think there's definitely an opportunity for a band doing this kind of stuff - I can't think of anyone locally doing it and none of the bands from out of town seem to pass through, or not with any regularity at least. Personally I'd prefer to see something more "period specific" but that's just me, as Chip says everyone seems to love the Hot Rods' Artic Monkeys cover so I think you could mix things up a fair bit. Now all you need is the rest of the band!
  20. You can google record valuation sites which might help you recognise if you've got any rarities with a particularly high value (for example http://www.popsike.com/php/quicksearch.php?searchtext=Elvis&thumbs=&currsel=&sortord=). Otherwise you could figure out a price you;d be happy with with and stick them on Ebay - usually if you price something too high, people will either let you know its unrealistic or at least come in with lower offers once the auction ends. "Premier record fairs" also hold regular record fairs at the Workstation in town. You could always list your records and ask advice from one of the stallholders there. Google them for their next event if you're interested. Selling records is a tough one though, as even if something is theoretically worth a fair bit, you've got to find the person who's looking to buy them - all the tougher in January when everyone's skint! Good luck and if you settle on a price that seems sensible, let me know on the offchance I'm got some cash spare!
  21. Can't help with the band, but make sure you come on here and let us know if any of the bands you try and kick off start gigging. You always post looking for musicians for bands I'd definitely want to see!
  22. Just a little pedantic point (on Sheffield Forum? No!!!), but a message saying people are gay, get over it doesn't promote homosexuality, it promotes tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality. If the driver were being asked to drive a bus with a massive sign on the side saying "Procreation is for pussies: GO GAY", THAT would be promoting homosexuality (and I'd get a photo of that bus) Refusing to drive a bus with a message on the side which basically says don't persecute people who are just getting on with what feels right to them, and probably doing it pretty unobtrusively to boot, is a different matter altogether.
  23. Shame you're playing the same night as Hot club of Cowtown are in Sheffield, otherwise I'd have come down. Have to catch you next time
  24. sorry to jump on your thread but if any of the banjo or mandolin players fancy joining a bluegrass/old time country duo (bass and guitar/harmonica), drop me a pm! Cheers!
  25. There's a woman who teaches it at a dance studio in Huddersfield, called Sharon...Finch I think.
