  1. Cheers apelike, I don't know how but I'd missed my LG telly stored in the settings. Deleted it and no further issues. I've used Kodi backup in the past, if we're on about the same thing, it only backed up the settings, the collected images etc didn't. With the Fire TV only having 8GB internal storage, I might drop Kodi on it and just use Plex. Thanks for the reply mate, It's appreciated.
  2. And let's not forget one of my pet hates during my time working in education... Projectors and the refusal to turn them off. Not only are they high power users but the lamps are very expensive and have an 'hours' life span. The excuse was "I don't have time" What, 20 seconds a few times a day? Printing is a massive expense in schools and in most cases, no regard for the price of a toner. Trust me when I say, toner cost run into the £1000's each year. The printer is the cheap bit! As I said previous, school budgets can be a joke. But if you are a teacher, try and think how many pencils and glue sticks etc you could buy, by simply cutting down the few outgoings mentioned. Obviously the savings would have to be passed on to teachers and not used for the heads expensive coffee budget!
  3. Some teachers are the most wasteful employees I have ever seen. They think printing, laminating and electricity are all free and can be wasted as much as they want! That it the short version of a very long list. It's not all of them but as usual, the few waste enough for it to start having an impact on everyone. I did witness classroom "borrowing" many times, some if it was need, other times it was laziness or a case of a used up quota and wanting more. I always found it funny watching people deny their skulduggery, when I knew different! Teachers can be very territorial when it comes to their class of children and do what's needed to get the job done. I have seen them dip into their own pocket many times. I've also seen people from buildings, IT and office staff do the same. My point is, all staff in schools need to think about things more carefully. The school gets a yearly budget and if a large chunk of it gets spent on the electricity bills, it will have a knock on effect. At the same time, budgets for schools need a massive review but when you put profit and education in the same place, I see nothing but issues.
  4. I bought an Amazon TV 4k HDMI dongle and it works very well apart from the fact, I can't seem to get it to forget the TV/Sound system I set it up on. I originally set it up on my LG telly with my Sony sound base. What I get now is, no matter which TV I plug the Fire TV into, the volume from Fire TV remote still makes my main TV/Sound system go up and down. I tried a reset of the remote by holding the Menu, back and left side of the circle but as soon as I pair it to the Fire TV, it starts operating my main TV again. I'd rather not reset the Fire TV if I can help it as I've installed Kodi and my library is quite big, as such it takes hours to index everything. Any idea of what I'm doing wrong? Thanks
  5. Not sure if it's the same thing but we used to play something at school called Bulldog. We'd play it in the gym with a medicine ball in the middle, half the class on each side of the gym and go for it. The object of the game was to get the ball to the other side...no rules as such!
  6. I'm not a frequent bus user but your comment on "2p" was a school day reminder for me. I think the busses were the 10 & 89 that I could catch to school. The grand total each way was 2p. A long time ago! Back on topic...
  7. Ah yes, a good wooden trolley with pram wheels was the ultimate status symbol as a kids on our streets. It's a wonder we are still here. Start at the top of Crowder hill, and off we went, all the way to the park at the bottom. We were fine! we had that high spec wooden hand brake on one of the wheels!!! In the Summers it would be Longley Baths. The year round games were tennis and golf (again, in Longley Park) The street games were hide and seek, football, cricket etc. With the odd scrap with lads from other streets thrown in.
  8. Haha.... perezilla! Good one Off to have a look now.
  9. I see. Well. at least I'll know what to do the next time I have a server down!
  10. Yeah just noticed that. It looks like the first egg that was possibly laid by the intruder that's she's booted out! Must be having a "peregrine" moment.
  11. I've had it on most of the morning and she/he was on the eggs earlier. I was counting from the Notts eggs being laid to the Sheffield ones, maybe I'm being impatient but the time difference seems to be a long one now. The 3 chicks at Notts are growing at their usual speedy rate.
  12. All done so time to wait and see if the calls still drop. I'd forgot about Android FRP. Not a problem if you've owned the phone from new but may cause problems if you bought it used. There seems to be plenty of info online if you're not sure. FRP
  13. Just started a full restore on the S8. Nearly forgot to swap the mobile banking app but most of my files go to SD so just removed that...just in case. I'm not sure what difference it make but I still do a couple of deletes on the cache, then go for full reset, needed?
  14. It's been a while but I seem to remember something like APN settings. These are the settings that your network provider give you that you put in your phone to connect to various services. You should be able to find the settings online or give them a call. I'm not sure it's the same type of problem but my S8 constantly drops calls. It seems the answer to that is a factory reset. Not something I want to do but if it needs it, I don't have much choice. I'll be changing the SIM to another phone first to make sure it's not a 3 issue.
  15. This bit made me laugh and I really would like a person such as a teacher to explain the finer points of using them to you. Do know know what an interactive whiteboard is and how they work? The main bit the children see looks the same, as in a big screen they read/work from. The nuts and bolts that make them work can be very different. Not sure what you're on about with this bit. What does this number represent? There is a vast difference in the the price of Server. CAL and PC licenses. To just post a number like this is meaningless. Are you saying that MS charges £450K for a single copy of 10 pro? Ok, let's look at this bit. We are a Windows run School/Company that decide we are going for the "free" Operating System that is Linux. Can you imagine the cost due to downtime, training and changing the current software either to a new one, or buying the Linux versions? Free isn't a word that comes to mind! Yes it can be done but it certainly won't be free. The cost to tax payers? Just a thought, it might be worth you voicing your opinions and thoughts instead of quoting a bloke from.... I have worked in Education and large business and can only pass on what I've seen and done. When it comes to an OS that users were used to, it was mainly Windows and macOS. Linux was tested but never quite did everything required at the time. As I said, you let us know your opinions and likes/dislikes, simply posting quotes from around the net is a bit pointless in our discussion. Or is it a case you just hate Microsoft and Windows and will say or post anything that appears to show how bad they are? If that's the case...fine, Not the best grounds for a discussion but you're entitled to your opinion.
  16. Oh well, on to the next. She lost after having a fairly good lead.
  17. If the real price is £1.47 million for what's listed, someone is having their pants down! While they are at it, they should sack their IT department for not doing simple stock management. Any person in charge of an IT department and are doing their job right, would never wait until everything is out of date and do it all in one hit. Plenty of UK schools use linux or mac. The software budget is only a small percentage compared to hardware and depending on their infrastructure and used software, may need to keep with Windows or mac etc in order to keep downtime and staff training to a minimum. I worked in education for a long time and feel free to ask any teacher/teaching assistant what the impact would be if they were given different interactive whiteboard software or another operating system on their class PC. I wish it was as black and white as you think but in the real world it tends to be more complicated than saving a few quid per PC on the operating system. Many factors come into play with large networks, not just finding a few links that fit your way of thinking.
  18. I've tried many times. I don't disagree with her when she says that the spare cash she has, she enjoys doing other things. I've offered to pay 50% of the cost but I think she might be holding out for the full 100% rate from The Bank of Dad. University is all but finished now and it's time for her to see how the big wide world works and how a lot of jobs have the "must hold full UK license" on them. Admittedly, not all but it does open up more IMO.
  19. On any other day, yes, without doubt. Problem was, when you have guests and the Ooooh, goes to an Oh! I used a bit of host politeness and binned it.
  20. And you did the right thing. I know the code for the newer AMD Chips/Chipsets has been updated many times since release. Some say to update the BIOS if things don't work, my opinion is that they don't update it for no reason. I tend to keep mine up to date. Don't worry about PXE, chances are you will never use it on a home network.
  21. As always, that's a two way street...or should be. Some folks just see the vapour and scream from the roof tops that it's killing them, instead of finding out what it is. As I said in my other post, the smell is subjective to the flavours people use. You mention a study that shows a 95/5% ratio. Do you have a link? And I'm not asking for a link as proof, I'm asking because I'm curious as to what the 5% is.
  22. Yes. Some we got for New years day, as you say, wrapped so we didn't see. Bought a few days before but when it was opened, it was way past eating!
