  1. What really makes my blood boil is the absurd deployment of staff on the 52 route to "check" on drivers.

for what must be around £8 per hour every day, so minimum £64 per day they monitor the busses at one checkpoint in town, to be specific on the wicker.

Now, I don't know how many busses are on the 52 route, but for £60 per bus PER YEAR they could have these vehicles tracked automatically. Probably giving much more advanced statistics (such as when drivers illegally wait 6-7 minutes at a stop with their engine running. when they have got ahead of their schedule etc) but no, let's not get with the times and let's employ a person who will fudge the figures because it's their colleagues they would be ratting on.

First of all, most buses in Sheffield ARE tracked automatically by a system called asis.

Secondly, why is a driver waiting his time 'illegal'?

I sometimes forget how little the average Joe knows about bus operation, then I read the forum and I'm reminded by ill informed clap trap like this.

With a leather strap on its leg?

some falconers keep buzzards. usually the more unusual variants.

Buzzards are normally scavenging birds of prey, road kill ect. They will go for the easy pickings , frogs , toads or large insects. Again, attacks on people could only be territorial, they must have been near the nesting sight.

Again, if it were a buzzard (and like most scavenger species, they will also take live pray, if the situation presents itself), the attack could have been territorial.

  5. Mali is but just one African country that the western interests are now taking seriously. One assumes this war is a first for most, and that they are unaware the USA has moved into 35 Aftican Countries, under the guise of terrorism of course.

These chosen countries by the USa also have interesting amounts of mineral wealth.

The reality is its a scramble for Africa, and the real enemy is of course China, got to keep them out, thus controling resources, one can control China's economy, and bring this country back under western control.

A bill has just been passed that allows the USa to use nuclear weapons in a first strike scenario, if it considers China a threat. It had already/previously drawn up plans for a war, theoretical of course, with China in 10 years. Got to get Syria and Iran sorted out first, getting their mineral wealth within western corporate influences.

I'm sure the US military has plans for a theoretical war with every nation on Earth. That's what military planning is all about. If they didn't have such plans in place they wouldn't be doing their jobs properly.

  6. Seeing as this issue crops up at least twice a month, maybe we can approach it a different way.

Clearly, people believe that First is responsible for buses not running on time. So perhaps someone can explain exactly what it is that First are doing (or not doing) to cause this situation?

And while we're at it, rather than just moan, perhaps someone can explain what they would like to see done to improve the situation? I'm sure First (as well as every other bus company in the country) would be very receptive to any suggestions that improves bus punctuality.

  7. I hate being late but sometimes it just can't be helped due to traffic congestion etc. Our buses don't get adjusted until they're at least ten minutes late or in exceptional circumstances. The half hour services don't get adjusted at all, otherwise that leaves people standing an hour waiting for a bus. Most of the drivers including myself prefer to catch the time up ourselves. I used to work for first bus and the management are terrible. Since I started working for stagecoach, I've noticed how slow the first drivers are at doing anything and are always blocking the bus stops up so nothing can get in or out.

I may be in a somewhat unique position here to offer my take on this, as I've recently made the switch from Stagecoach to First. I have to say, my impressions so far is that First are a far better company to work for than Stagecoach, who try and wring every last drop out of their drivers (by having ludicrously long shifts) then hang them out to dry when the driver needs the company to fight his corner.

I can't speak for the previous management at First and I am aware that there were issues having talked to some of the older drivers, but my impressions of the 'new' First have been backed up by other ex-Stagecoach drivers, all of whom ive talked to, prefer working for First.

As for your other points, I won't stand (well, sit actually!) and slag off Stagecoach drivers, I still have many good friends at Ecclesfield, but what I will say is that I find that I'm adjusted less at First than i was at Stagecoach (even with Radio Free Jamaica in charge of the acis ;) )

  8. Whenever there's an anouncement of an asteroid or meteor near-miss, I always wonder

if the powers that be would actually tell us peasants of an impending collision.

Surely you would want to keep the population in blissful ignorance.

This particular space rock only has to have the lightest kiss on a similar object and

it may well be on a collision coarse with our little planet with no possibility if

    missing us.

On skygazing, or whatever it was called, they asked some NASA chick what could be done if an impact was forecast. She gave some credible sounding scenarios where the asteroid could be pushed it pulled off its trajectory, but I reckon whilst these theories would work, in practice I doubt we have the technology to implement them.

So we'd most likely be boned!

The war was essentially between two of the US's allies. Publicly, they had to remain neutral, but in reality, their help was weighted heavily in favour of the British.

  10.

But it's the attitude of the United States that still grates most of all. Their reluctance to support us against the Fascist Argentine Junta is well known. Initially, in April 1982, they even refused us permission to use the US operated airfield on Ascension Isla

nd (a British Crown Colony for Heaven's sake) to refuel RAF aircraft. In 2012 the US does not recognise our legal claim to the Falkland Islands which Hillary Clinton's staff insolently refer to as "Las Malvinas".

The next time the Americans want our support in a military venture (and, yes, there seems to be a big one in the offing) we should tell them to take a hike."

Yes, but because they do not explode properly they were cheap.

or, given the missile fired to ship sunk/damaged ratio during the war, they decided that the exocet was better at the time than harpoon, for example?

  13. Tightening the licencing of handguns would be a step in the right direction.

Why anyone would need an assault rifle outside the parameters of armed conflict is beyond me. But in all fairness so would a handgun...but I guess it has to start somewhere.

    ---------- Post added 18-12-2012 at 10:22 ----------

Is stockpiling food and guns an American thing? Is there another country that does this? What is it they are "Prepping" for?

Actually, I believe there are preppers in this country too (if the Discovery channel is to be believed!) although personally I've never met one.

As to what they are preparing for, I 'spose it varies on the person, but the gist of it is some form of crash of society - economical, viral, political etc. basically an end of world apocalyptic type scenario.

  14. Holidays are normally accrued, such that if you get 25 days per year , you will accrue 25/12 = 2.08 days holiday for every month that you work there. If you have accrued enough holidays when the time off arrives you will get paid. That is how it usually works.

I suspected that may be the answer. Thanks for replying:thumbsup:

  15. I recently joined a new company and they have agreed to honour a holiday which I had booked prior to joining them.

This may well be a daft question, but as I have never been in this position before I'm clueless about this, but by honouring does this men they will pay me for the week I'm off or simply allow me the time off?

Thanks in advance for any help:)

  16. Delays in bus times maybe, but disappearing buses?

For the record I've also had a similar problem on Friday nights when trying to catch a bus into town from Grenoside. Last Summer a bus didn't turn up and the following bus was over 10 minutes late.....No Christmas shoppers or Wednesday game then.

I wonder if the bus companies sometimes pull buses off the less popular routes to try and save money, although the driver yesterday did say the disappearing bus had left the depot.

In my experience the Supertram is great, but buses are very unreliable.

    Regards

    Doom

Wow, a whole 10 minutes? Did you contact the Star?

The Supertram may well appear good in comprison to buses, but remember that the tram doesnt have to compete with traffic, given that it has priority over other road uses.

As for the missing bus, it most likely did leave the depot but was delayed in the match/pre-Christmas traffic, meaning it was 'adjusted' in an attempt to get it back on time. Bus companies have to be very careful as to their motives for pulling buses from the time tables - saving money wouldnt cut the mustard.

  17.

Neither actually, lived in area since before you were born (1955) and telling it exactly as it is

    ---------- Post added 08-12-2012 at 08:20 ----------

Yes they are outside bus depot and cause disruptions because they block inside lane off and anyone wanting to turn left is stuck behind them on a very busy main road

I don't think you even know what you're saying any more. Only one route changes driver outside the depot -the 88. Which as you've had explained to you numerous times now is done at the specific instructions of Stagecoach Sheffield NOT as you claim down to the laziness of the drivers.

  18.

Erm no they don't and speaking as someoe who travels that route every weekday mostly in rush hour they don't have a build up outside Morrisons because that bus stop is set back from road and does not block traffic flow.

    You really are dim.

I DROVE all the routes mentioned whilst at Stagecoach upto a couple of weeks ago, so I KNOW where the driver change over points are and what kind of tailbacks are caused by doing the driver change overs there.

For you to suggest that there is no disruption to the traffic flow caused by the build up buses, especially at peak times leaves me to believe that either you're lying about your knowledge of the area, drive around with your eyes closed or you're just a troll.

    Which is it?

  19. You really are a bit simple arent you?

Bus drivers don't 'decide' where to change drivers, we do it where we're instructed to by the company which employ us. Failure to do so would result in disciplinary action.

Stagecoach do change overs for the 87, 265 and 83/83a outside of the Morrisons stop at Ecclesfield, a stop that is also served by the First 76 route as well as the 29 and the X10. During peak times it is impossible to access the stop to change driver or simply load/unload passangers without causing major disruption to the traffic flow. And you want to add the 88 (every 10 minutes) to the mayhem?

No they don't, we are stuck behind them all the time. You may be told what changeover to do but whats to stop you hopping on the bus and doing the changeover outside Morrisons

    Erm, yes they do:huh:

As for you're other point A/ once wind reached management (and it would, trust me) the drivers responsible would be disciplined and B/as I have already explained adding yet another changeover (on a 10 minute service) to an already congested stretch of road would result in near total gridlock.

Still, as long as you don't have to wait a few minutes, who cares if other people are held up for ages on end, right?

  20. You're joking right? When you are on your way home from work and bus drivers block an entire lane of rush hour traffic while they change drivers when they could easily do it in a less awkward place two minutes round corner and disrupt nobody:roll::roll:

    ---------- Post added 05-12-2012 at 21:39 ----------

Not totally true though, lets take the Junction of Norwood Avenue and Herries road, the bus stop is a few meters (yes meters) from the Junction and on a blind bend, only enough room for one car to queue behind a bus therefore forcing others to queue on Herries causing another issue there, naturally certain car drivers will try to pass the bus if it's unloading passangers going to the NGH, so in my opinion it's a major FAIL by the planner because it's in a very dangerous place and on a slight bend too, I could name others but just haven't got the time.

The one next to the Premier shop? If it is this one, it's siting (which isn't great, I will admit) is exacerbated by the fact that so many car drivers park illegally in the bus stop there, forcing the bus to pull wider and blocking off traffic in either direction.

I don't know if it just a Shiregreen thing, but most of the bus stops restrict/stop the flow of traffic. And at school times can totally gridlock certain junctions!.

Also, bus stops 200 yards apart!whats all that about?

1 example being Nethershire shops.3 bus stops from there to corner of Beck road.

I would add Lowedges Road to this, but there are many, many more. I call them lazy stops. There is little or no point in having so many stops so closely situated.

  21. Scania in Worksop do it I believe, Peter Smyth in Mansfield do it too - but old kit and very expensive.

If you are looking for your cat D, it may be worth applying to Stagecoach or First as they run Driver Academy's and will put you through it as part of a 1 year contract (I think), great for gaining a years experience and free training / travel.

    HTH

Can't speak for First, but Stagecoach take a payment from your wages weekly to pay for the training. The amount varies between depots, the most being £10 per week for two years.

  22. There is no ‘working out’ required, it is fact. The timetable indicates that there should be a bus at 19:50, then one at 20:00, then one at 20:10, then one at 20:20, then one at 20:30 and then one at 20:40.

However there is regularly no bus at 19:50, 20:00, 20:10, 20:20 or 20:30. However 4 buses then turn up at 20:40.

Is that ‘worked out’ satisfactorily for you?

Satisfactory to work out you're a moron with zero idea of driving in a big city, yes :)

  23. im in killamarsh and we had one bus every half an hour they took that off .We now have the 71 every hour 7 days a week and a bus every 10 min to peaks .
