I started working at the Dial when I was 15 years old as a bottle collector back in 1971. Stan was in charge of us and Keith Ripley was the steward.

Who remembers being caned at school?
Big E replied to paul0726's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I remember getting 4 strokes of the stick for taking some booze into school. Also was a member of the "red hand" gang who got a fullwhack smack on the arse in front of the class. -
Sorry, I said that I spent six months in the toolroom, it was in the drawing office, I did my apprenticship as a toolmaker. I was there at the same period of time Peter Parker, Trever Rowbottom, Morris Grainger, Brian Gunny, Tony Ronksley, (saw him at the speedway), Joe Pye and Jock Miller. I was in the toolroom when Jock's son, John was there. Hello Last Orders. I will get over to visit you eventually. This forum has brought back some happy memories and names from the past. And hello to you Sneaks, not seen you for a few years. Are you still living at near the Kentucky at Middlewood and doing any DJ ing? Hope your keeping well.

I worked at Rabones from leaving school at 15. Started my apprenticship in the toolroom in 1971 and got made redundant in 1982ish, I think. I spent 6months in the toolroom with Ian Skinner and Dave(?). I recognise lots of names mentioned and have got very fond memories of my time at Chesterman's.

Earl Grey Pub - Ecclesall Road, do you remember it ?
Big E replied to SnifferDog's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I used to go into the Earl Grey after getting some overtime in at Rabone Chesterman's on a Saturday morning. The landlord was called John Emery who later went onto be the landlord at the Shakespear Inn on Bradfield Road in Hillsborough. I think John retired a few years ago. -
Wisewood school - left 1973, anyone else that era?
Big E replied to owls57's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I left Wisewood around 1970ish. All the teachers mentioned were there. I remember Mr Lily and the deputy head (forgot his name) both playing the saxophone. Anyone remember "come here Jimmy" Mr Haydock. Also remember getting 4 strokes of the stick for taking some booze into school - happy memories!
