When this store first opened, sometime in the late 60s as I recall, it was originally as a supermarket. I believe it was Tesco. My Wife, who is from Darnall, remembers it opening. She seems to recall that it was opened by the Beatles. I was working in Darnall at the time and seem to remember some excitement about its opening. Can anyone please confirm.

How many Sheffielders go to Skegness on holiday?
kivvoman replied to Rampent's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
The best thing about Skegness is the A52 road out! -
Seems like hogging the outside lane is an epidemic that seems to affect a great number of drivers in Sheffield. Who taught these to drive? they obviously have no conception of correct lane discipline. They hog the right hand lane maybe because they have to turn right a mile ahead our frightened to use the left hand lane because there is a vehicle parked in it ten miles ahead!

Are Sheffield drivers ignorant as to the proper use of bus lanes? Most of these (Ecclesall and Abbydale Roads are open to ALL traffic except at times clearly shown on roadside signs, and usually applies Moday to Friday only. I regularly use these routes and am suprised at how many drivers wont use them outside these times. Also it is a test failure to not use them when allowed. It indicates a lack of observation and knowledge of the Highway Code.

How do I/can I report an out of control dog?
kivvoman replied to Isabelle's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Nothing wrong with dogs but I do wish that owners would train them not to jump up. Its not everybody who appreciated having their clothes and legs muddied up by unleashed dogs. Some ow.ers actually think its funny! -
I remember train spotting with friends at Victoria in the early 60s when steam was still around mixing with the electrics. We would sometimes access the station up the steps from the Wicker. There was also a lift there but I can never remember it working. Are there any remains of these. There was also an iron foot bridge from the station concourse across Furnival Road (on the city side of the arch) with steps down to street level as I remember. I cant remember the actual date of removal. If you stand on Furnival Road and look up over the arch where the road passes under the site, there are still visible scars where this bridge was attached to the stonework.

Nice to see the masses using their right to protest. Things have never been right since Margaret Thatcher came to power!

On seeing a recent program, The Reel History of Britain, an episode was broadcasted from Park Hill Flats. This set my wife and I thinking, what are/were the landing names. Park Hill, we believe are, in ascending order, Pavement (Shopping Area), Gilbert, Hague Row, Long Henry Row & Norwich Row. Please confirm or correct. Hyde park was more difficult to remember as there were four separate complexes. Names like Dacre, Stepney Gardens & St Johns Gardens come to mind. I Believe, however, that the largest block had names that ran in alphabetical order in ascending order, the top floor being St Johns Garden. Could someone please help and put us out of our misery!

Thank you for your reply. Having looked on Google earth for the location given and the location of the address given on the credit review, I note that they appear to be residential addresses. However, the credit review address, In Crookes, appears to have a very large garden with what looks like a workshop in the corner. Could the locomotives have been built there?

Does anyone know of the existence of a company by this name? Is it still trading and where is/was it located? I believe the company built miniature steam and diesel locomotives for the Isle of Mull railway in the '80s. Any information would be appreciated.

Whats with all the giant spiders?
kivvoman replied to joiner andy's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Conkers definitely work. Been using them for two years but they have to be replaced every year. Clumber park here we come. I recall reading an article some while back about chestnut wood. Evidently, spiders wont live near it as there is a resin in it that spider find distasteful. Fill your homes with chestnut furniture maybe! -
I agree. There has been a feature about this on Watch Dog if I remember rightly. The message was plain and clear. DON'T PAY!

On the M1 a few years back. L10NEL (Lionel) cant remember what car it was.

The atmosphere grabs you round the shoulders like an old friend! -
Expand the tram system to at least the size of the old on closed in 1960. one of the best things to happen in Sheffield in recent years!

Dont forget that Robin Hood was a Yorkshireman! Known as Robin of Loxley in the books I read. Where is Loxley? Sheffield! Burried at Kirklees! What more evidence do you need. Try arguing that with someone from Notts!!!

Is this the same Ronksley's that used to come round Intake in the 50s & early 60s. Based at Coal aston I think. They did great lollies too, my favourite being cider flavour. A great loss when they stopped coming. never knew why. Whilst on the subject of ice cream sellers, anyone remember the horse drawn ice cream cart whick again came round Intake about the same time. I think it was Craig's. He used to rattle a biscuit tin lid to announce his arrival. Next door had to keep their poodle locked up when he came round. The poodle would roll in the horse pee if let out!!!

As a kid in the late 50s & early 60s we would often catch the Circular to Graves Park. The big treat would be to go on the rowing boats. As we got older, some kids would even drop a hand line from the boat for a bit of illicit fishing, hoping the Parky wouldn't catch them. Anyway, a recent visit found the boats gone and the lake covered in lilly pads. What happened to the boats? rumour has it they were stopped after a girl was drowned. Other parks also had boating lakes, these included Forge Dam, Hilsborough Park & Western Bank Lake which I recall also had a motor boat named Queen Elizabeth. Anybody Confirm. High Hazles and Millhouses parks also had smaller lakes with paddle boats on them. It would appear that all these have also lost their boating lakes. Are there any boating lakes left in Sheffield?. It would seem a sign of the times that they probably be subject to vandalism. I do not count Rother Valley Country Park among these as this has a dedicated watersport facility.

When did the Don last freeze over?
kivvoman replied to TeaFan's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
It probably never froze over before the 80s. All the polution chucked in from industry would have lowered the freezing point by several degrees. Same would apply to the Rother, remember its distinctive smell. -
Now winter has arrived!! it appears that the silly season for driving with front foglights lit when road conditions are clear are back with a vengance. Its usually the younger drivers that have picked up this habit but some oder driver have picked it up too. What these drivers may not realise is that it can be very distracting, especially on wet roads, for oncomming traffic as they can cause dazzle. Also it is a Road traffic Offence as these lights must only be used in fog or falling snow when visibility is less than 100 yards as with rear high intensity fog lights. Please switch them off. And before you ask, yes I do have front foglamps on my vehicle!

Has anyone mentioned Walkers at Beighton. I believe that was its name, i remember buying a front tyre there. it became Coopers Car sales. Also I used to hear my Father mention Horrige (or was it Orridge) and Wildgoose. Cant remenber where it was but I think they sold spares. I remenber seeing Bill Bevers racing in the 1958 & maybe 1959 Isle of Man TT before they stopped him due to his age. Jack Wood had a shop at Handsworth, I bought a brand new MZ from him in1983. Not a lot of power compared with Jap bikes but unbustable and handled like a dream with decent tyres. Also Charlie Freeman and his sidecar passenger Billy Nelson who would ride solo in the junior and Senior races. (Why were there never any prices on his bikes). Nice to see where his bike shop was is now called Freeman's Court.

Why is it thet so many Sheffield Drivers have no sense of lane discipline? It seems that even when dual carriage roads are empty, there is always some numpty hogging the right hand lane. Is it because they may be turning right two miles ahead or there MAY be a vehicle parked in the left hand lane. What ever the reason rule 137 of the Highway Code states you should stay in the left hand lane and use the right hand lane for overtaking and turning right (but not two miles ahead!) ant to move back in to the left hand lane when it is safe to do so. These drivers are also prone to drive well under the speed limit thus causing annoyance and frustration to other drivers who would like to travel at the speed limit but can't overtake without making an illegal undertaking manoevre. So please those of you who travel along Retford Road at about 0645 in the morning through Woodhouse Mill, if traveling towards Handsworth, as there is very little traffic about, you DONT need to be in the right hand lane until at least passing the Princess Royal where you can then move to the correct lane at the bottom of Furnace Lane.

Yes you would recognise me. Bags dragging on the floor, face as long as Norfolk Street, shuffling along!

Thank you for giving positive views of Sheffield. To many out there are ready to slag it off, yes it does have its problems like any other big city but in recent years it has come on magnificently. Look at Melenium Square and the Winter Gardens for example. I was born and bred at Intake in the Fifties and remember what a smoky hole it was then. Ok I now live well out of the city but regularly visit the City Centre using the excelent Supertram. Pity its not being extended in the near future.

Does anyone remember Sunny a one man outfit. He had a yard, in the early 70s, up a side street on the right as you went up Broad Street towards Hyde Park. He usually had an array of tatty looking bikes but there would sometimes be a gem amongst them. A Royal Enfield 250 Turbo Twin was one I missed out on. He ran an old 1950s Morris van for deliveries. Also John Street Motorcycles, again in the early 70s another one man outfit. I bought a D10 BSA Bantam from him in 1971. Not the best of bikes but provided me with much enjoyment for the next 18 months. As for Pollards, is it still trading. It was in 2007 when I last had a bike tested. George Pollard was still knocking about then, unfortunately not in the best of health, but still taking pride in showing my wife and I his bike and car collection. Is he still alive?
