  1. Hillsborough Inn,the building is still there but no longer a pub. On a slow afternoon the landlord would let us pull our own beer
  2. Used to visit my grandparents in the late 40s. There name was Glaves, I think they lived on Valentines Rd
  3. While researching the English composer George Butterworth I found he was an officer in the Durham light infantry which was one of the regimentā€™s stationed at the barracks.Alas he was killed in WW1
  4. I seem to remember buying at different times,a trumpet,banjo, and camera from the shop on Infirmary Rd
  5. They sold lots of things other than paint.White Lead,,Red Lead,Linseed oil, Dryers, pumice blocks ,brushes etc,etc
  6. On the subject of travel agents,my grandson who is interested in all things Titanic has a copy of a poster advertising Titanics Atlantic crossing.Booking at Thomas Cook ,Fargate ,Sheffield

  15. In my recent endeavours at bread baking I was not able to replicate the taste of my grandmotherā€™s brad cakes..I seem to remembered the yeast was called balm and was the texture of firm putty..Am I mistaken, when I googleā€œbalmā€ there is no indication it is yeast
  16. There used to be a bake shop on Parkside Rd.When I was going to Hillsborough infants school, must have been around 1945 I was given milk money,I think it was a penny. I used to walk up Parkside Rd to school.We would sometimes buy a tea cake with the milk money At the bake shop By the way there was a photo on the BBC Sheffield website showing 75 anniversary by some residents of Parkside Rd
  17. The newsagents I do remember. I used to buy my cigarette Tabasco and liquorice rolling paper there, along with the Daily Worker and the Daily Telegraph

  19. I must have a memory block.For the life of me I cannot remember this cafe. I must have been up and down Snig Hill hundreds of times from 1945 to 1966 was it opened after 1966?
