  1. It depends what you mean by "good". A school can be good for academically able children but terrible for the less able. It can also have good results but produce children with terrible attitudes. Tapton, for example, has results which aren't too bad, but anyone seeing their pupils travel to school on a bus wouldn't want their own children to mix this them.
  2. I have been down Twentywell Lane many hundreds, possibly even thousands, of times and have never seen a ghost. The only explanation that I can think of is that they are "pretend" things. Of course, someone will be along in a minute and will explain that they are not "pretend", they are caused by [insert mumbo jumbo here].
  3. No, it was families having a meal out, but the men keeping hats on. I can't remember the last time that I ate in a restaurant and saw someone with a hat one, and I rarely eat at very fancy places.
  4. I tried Whitbys yesterday and wasn't that impressed really. The cod was Ok and the chips were fine, so no complaints, but not particularly good either. Just fairly ordinary fish and chips. The clientele were also a bit rough with two out of a total of 5 tables having mean eating with their hats on. So not really somewhere I would go again.
  5. I agree. If I had a house near one of the lines then I wouldn't be thinking "OH whoopee I might eventually make a few quid more than its worth after it has been compulsory purchased". I would just be dreading decades of it being blighted.
  6. Airports aren't just about package holidays to spain. Airports serve a number or purposes, such as:- Freight. (Then distribution centres with associated jobs are built near the airport). Business Aircraft (not just jets). Wealthy people are more likely to set up a business where they can get to it. Prestige. Manchester, Leeds and even Doncaster have one. Helicopter Operations (yes helicopters do need a runway). For example pipeline/national grid surveys but there are many other uses. I used to have a business in Sheffield. I now have one at Doncaster airport. I know of several other people in the same position. I also know of one example of a substantial investment that went elsewhere after the airport closed.
  7. Sounds like what might be called a "battery". I wonder if perhaps it might also be a hugely expensive battery? Either that or lots of mirrors or infinite size.
  8. Why not turn up at the march and double the average IQ?
  9. I really hate people who shorten their journey by using shortcuts to avoid heavy traffic. What is wrong with these dimwits, can't they just sit in a long traffic jam like everyone else?
  10. I think he should have said:- "Look, your child is a bit too fat but if I call her 'obese' then you might get on the front page of the Star, which is only one small step from your own episode on Jeremy Kyle".
  11. Yes, the grass is fine but all the structures are old and worn. I don't believe that the majority of people who want to name this manky old stadium after Miss Ennis has actual seen it. I wouldn't want it named after me.
  12. Can I suggest that all the people calling for the Don Valley Stadium to be names after her first take a quick trip there and have a look at it. It is a horrible dump, and it might not last many more years.
  13. Poor lass, she has to choose between a run down stadium or a naff shopping centre.
  14. I think you are being a bit petty. How about Ennisshire? Failing that, how about giving her a gold medal or something?
  15. Perhaps we should call the Don Valley Stadium the "Jessica Ennis Deserves Respect Stadium"?
  16. Don Valley Stadium is a run down dump of a place. The seats are manky, the concrete is cracked, and the whole place looks like it won't be here in years to come. It would be appropriate to rename the stadium after her, as she will probably have the good sense not to be here in years to come either. But if they are to name anything after her, it should really be something new and exciting, not old and worn out.
  17. This shouldn't really be under "Sheffield". All that has happened here is that the nutjobs have used the ridiculous concept that Sheffield accounts are being held up by some secret organisation of giant lizards. No doubt the fact that I am ridiculing their conspiracy theories must now prove that I am also a shape-shifting giant lizard?
  18. If it will light a fag then it is a genuine lighter. If no flame is produced then it is a fake lighter.
  19. Actually it is "You're missing an R".
  20. I dare say that some people think they are helping by posting threads like this. But really we live on the top of a big hill, and it is a bit wet and windy out, nothing to get anxious about. During the winter in the UK it is fairly normal for it to be wet and windy, sometimes very wet and very windy. What is different these days is that everyone can wind each other up on the interweb until they all think the end of the world has arived.
  21. I will send a PM with more details, which I don't want on a public forum.
  22. Well certainly not "ultimate sacrifice" for a start. I prefer words that express what really happened, such as killed, slaughtered, mutilated and such like. Those that came back were pretty much ignored, as all soldiers are until there is a war going on and then they are "heroes" for a year or so.
  23. In the case of WW1, the sacrifice was most certainly not for our liberty. In my mind this event is still most associated with that war, although in recent years there has been an attempt to broaden it out. There is also far too much guff about the "fallen" which is so far from what really happens it is sickening.
