  1. You lucky soul - I would have loved to have got to the Mojo but I was too young. I attended "Down Broadway" but was told it just did not compare. I remember my parents considered the Mojo to be a den of sin !!!! But I used to hang on to every word of the older brothers and sisters of my mates who went to the club as they described the sounds and the live artists they saw there. I am a big Small Faces fan - did they ever perform at the Mojo ?
  2. May only be back for 2 days though !!!
  3. Unconfirmed reports that buses are back in the morning folks !!!!
  4. Thanks Mark , Wonder if the Church is still standing ? Or did the Foundations weaken the foundations !!! I'll get me coat cheers Chris
  5. Talking with some old mates a few weeks ago. We were all into Soul Music in the late Sixties. One night we heard of a Soul Night at a place called the ARK somewhere in the Netherthorpe area. Went a few times - they played some good music. In fact everytime I hear "I Thank You" by Sam & Dave I think of the place. But we turned up one Friday night and depite the posters it was closed. I think it was in a Church Hall , anyone else recall this venue ?
  6. Fulwood Hospital - was empty for several years before it was sold to developers - and is now a "luxury complex". The views over the Mayfield Valley are superb from the front of the building. It was originally an annexe for the old Royal Hospital on West St. I think it specialised in plasic surgery . I also recall that Phil Oakey (Human League) worked as a porter there. Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins worked at Middlewood Hosp - in the stores during the summer hols. Cheers
  7. Can anyone recall the words to the Hallam jingle that was played back in 1974 when it first came on air. It was the one that went - "If you live in Sheffield or on the Yorkshire Moors !!! " that's all I can remember. I think it was dropped after a few months. And most people can recall the first record to be played on Radio One in 67. Can anyone remember the first disc to be played on Hallam ?
  8. I was at the demolition of Wadsley Bridge. The midnight scheduled explosion was nearer 1.30 I think ! From 11 onwards there was a large crowd of mostly "well oiled" spectators waiting for the big bang at midnight. I think the pub was supped dry. Midnight came and went - it was obvious that the police and demo experts wanted the crowd to thin out a bit - and it did. I remember feeling very cold when the bridge went an hour or so later. I recall the explosion was a bit of a damp squib as well ! Ah well - at least I was there.
  9. I was there when Charlie Martin was Head. Other teachers I remember - Mr Anion ?? Giles Stanton Latham Mc Nerny ? Pop Walsh Farrell Cherry - Woodwork Swinden - Metal Nuns - Josie ( Evil Nun) Veronica (Nice Nun) A tough school - fights daily - cane ruled -battles with Colley Kids - wrecked school buses - great school puddings - good flat footy pitch - great days.
  10. Trying to recall if there was ever a Mansfield Pub in Sheffield City Centre ? Any idea folks ?
  11. Mojo - incredible line up - Hendrix and Humperdinck on the same bill !!!! What venue in Cheserfield was used ?
  12. Thanks - I did not realise that two shows were on that night. I can remember Andy of Amen Corner kneeling down on stage at the climax of "Gin House". I can also recall Pink Floyds Lightshow - superb (At the time). Those were the days.
  13. I seem to recall this one has featured on this forum before but can anyone tell me who were the support acts when Hendrix played Sheffield City Hall in 67. I seem to remember Amen Corner were one ??? But not sure --- long time ago !!! Thanks
  14. I remember the 66 World Cup in Sheffield. The atmosphere in those few weeks was great. But can't remember the clock ???
  15. Anyone with memories of the BEST cinema ever in Sheffield (even now) Can't remember when it opened but I was there at the first ever film to be shown there. I was only a kid but my mum got a couple of tickets for the UK premiere of a romantic comedy called "Don't Bother To Knock". Widescreen films shown there were superb because of the size of the cinema you could get some distance between you and the screen, unlike the smaller venues of today. Progess ?????
  16. Someone mentioned Violet May in another Thread. I spent most Saturday mornings in the late 60's early 70's trawling round all the second hand record shops and market stalls around town. One of my haunts was Violet's store at the back of the Moor (I did visit her old shop a few times down near what is now Castle Square) What a place - never mind the records the banter between the punters and Violet was priceless. She was a wily old bird - although she often miscalculated the value of some of the Soul imports/demos she had in the shop - so I picked up some bargains. Who was the old guy who worked there - he was on other planet most of the time. She once had a float in the Lord Mayors Parade and sat in a rocking chair at the back of the truck. I presume Violet is no longer with us. Happy Days
  17. As a kid I can remember walking past the "Swan" and odly enough it was painted green. There was also a sign that said "What's behind the green door tonight" and underneath this was often a poster for whichever live artist was on at the time. (Frankie Vaughan had a big hit with the song "Green Door" in late 1956) (I have got a version of this song by a guy called Wynder K Frogg from around 1968 ?) Not many people know that !!!
  18. In the late 60's used to go down to the then LOCARNO on Sunday nights. Remember the DJ was called "Mighty Atom" and I think the guy was only small 4 - 5 ft. Never got too close to the decks. Anyone else remember him ?
  19. Have you got a copy of the Centenary Handbook ? Some good info and photos in there. I had one but it went missing when I moved house !!
  20. Sad news - These days there are few LOCAL people on local radio - back in the 70's both Hallam and Sheffield had locals on who you could relate to. The last time I heard Tony on air he played 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place' by The Animals. As you may know the first verse -- "In this dirty old part of of the city where the sun refused to shine" Tony cuts in at this point with - "Darnall" RIP
  21. I think Hallam went on the air in Oct 74. Listened to it all the time back then -seemed to be fewer ads then. Listened to it a few weeks ago and it only played FOUR songs in the 25 mins !!! Never listen much at all now. Can anyone recall Moffat slagging off ELVIS after he died ? Some Elvis fans beat him up outside the studio later that night. HAPPY DAYS
  22. A bit surprised no one has responded to this one ------ must be some of the old MOJO crowd out there who sampled DOWN BROADWAY. Remember also no alco license so we had to get a pass out and go in the Blue Bell next door (Now Cavells).
  23. Andy - You mentioned Average White Band , I was a big fan back in the seventies and can't believe I missed them. Can you pin a date on the show at all ?
  24. I worked in the Stores Dept at Middlewood for a few years in the 70's. I had a copy of the Centenery Book but managed to lose it !! A fascinating read if you can get hold of a copy. The place had a great atmosphere back then. I don't believe in Ghosts but the site was spooky on dark winter evenings.
  25. I was too young to sample the MOJO so had to settle for DOWN BROADWAY on High St. I went down almost every Saturday night wearing a suit top,my dad's military tie and faded jeans !!!! I was told it wasn't as good as the MOJO but I loved it. Great Motown and Soul Sounds. When it was a bargain shoe basement a few years back I went down those steps again and had a look round. I could not believe how small the place was. Remember the cloak room - a pile of coats in a corner !! Also saw a few live acts there - I recall BANDWAGON - ("Tearing Down The Walls Of Heartache") were good. After a year or two the Stringfellows decided to go upmarket and it closed down. They then opened the PENTHOUSE on Dixon Lane . Lots of steps !!!! and never the same. Any memories of DB anyone ???
