  1. There were three - One was the Park Cinema, another called The Kinema ?? What was the other called across from Barracks ? Went there a lot as a kid - Jerry Lewis and Norman Wisdom films went down well.
  2. Anyone out there ever seen Dusty Springfield in one of her rare appearances in Sheffield. City Hall or Gaumont. Cheers Chris
  3. Radio 270 anchored off Scarborough was the strongest signal in the Sheffield Area in the Mid Sixties. Good Music and good DJ's
  4. The Silent Witness that was filmed in Sheffield is on TV tonight folks
  5. Sad to say that Levi is not in the best of health at the moment. Duke Fakir is now the only original still performing with a very good current Tops. Met the Tops at a Radio Sheffield Sat Morning Live show from the old Radio Sheffield Shop near Town Hall back in early Seventies. Roxy Music were there same time -- spoke to a very bored Bryan Ferry as well.
  6. The sad news that Renaldo Benson of the Tops passed away last week reminded me of the great nights we had with the Tops when they came and performed at the Fiesta every year in the early Seventies. With a few City Hall performances for good measure. Been giving the Tops records a good spin this week ! Any one else with any memories of the group ?
  7. Did the Small Faces ever appear at the MOJO ?
  8. Did anyone out there go to see the Small Faces perform a one night stand at the Rank back in the late Sixties. I was there but memory now hazy. I recall it was a good night - but I don't think Steve and the lads were on very long.
  9. Thanks for the Booker T info folks. Spoke to a mate of mine from way back who told me that the support act for that concert was BLUE MINK. I always thought that Blue Mink was a seperate show. So there ya go. Cheers Chris
  10. Booker T is best remembered for - Green Onions - Soul Limbo (The Cricket Tune) and Time is Tight. All instrumentals.
  11. Went to see Booker T at City Hall in early seventies. But can't remember the support acts ??? Anyone out there who went to this show ? Cheers Chris
  12. I was a regular at Down Broadway on Sat nights. Often kept waiting outside for Stringfellow and his brother to open up the club. No drinks license so had to geta pass out to nip into Blue Bell next door. Pity it was so small but had some good nights there.
  13. Thanks Pietro Pattison,Tew,Roebuck and Senior all now come to mind. Senior - he was the sums teacher. I also recall that a handbell was rung at the end of dinnertimes and "playtime".
  14. I attended the Junior School at Southey 1955-61 I am struggling to remember the teachers at that time. I lived on North Hill Road . Great playground and grassed area - ideal for footy as I recall. Anyone out there with a better memory ?
  15. I can recall a few dancers who fancied themselves at the Ark. As at all venues some were good and others thought they were. I was a crap dancer - and I knew it - so I was a watcher ! Thev only "dancer" from the Ark I remember was a tall blonde guy who attracted a lot of female attention. Some good music played though. Take me bak -great days.
  16. Going through some old singles from the sixties in my record collection lasty night. Found "Needles and Pins" by The Searchers and that took me right back to the moment I bought the record after having it played for me by the staff in a shop down Hillsborough. It wasn't Wigfalls or Woolies but some independent electrical shop located I think near the present Woolies. Anyone recall the name of the shop ?
  17. This morning's Sheffield Telegraph has almost a full page tribute to Dave.
  18. I would hope there is a tribute to Dave in the Telegraph on Friday. So far no mention in the Star ?? Yet the Guardian and Independent carry tributes. Cheers Chris
  19. Lorna , Has the local press covered the news yet ?
  20. Sad news , Never met Dave but loved his column in the old Blues and Soul Magazine. He brought a touch of class to the Soul Scene. Went down to London in the seventies to buy some records from his shop and have a chat. But would you believe it there was a note pinned on the door saying that the shop had closed early to enable Dave to travel up to Blackpool. I was amazed when he turned up in Sheffield to engage in his other great passion - films. A guy worth listening to - whatever the subject.
  21. This is something that Radio Sheffield and the Star would be interested in. Why not contact them - they may do all the conversion work for you .
  22. That's right - I went down to London one weekend to visit the shop - see Dave and take in Aretha Franklin at Hammersmith Odeon. Got to the shop and to my surprise it was closed -with a note on the door explaining that Dave had shut early to go 'Up North' to a dance venue !!! Aretha was superb so the journey was well worth it. Cheers Chris
  23. Reading the Metro on the bus this morning. On page 19 is a review of a new CD - 'Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol.4' Back in the late sixties I was an avid reader of Blues and Soul Magazine and I loved to read Dave's column - it brought a touch of class to the Soul scene. Does Dave still live in Sheffield ? He often had letters published in the Star and I know some years ago he was involved with the Anvil Cinema.
  24. Number 1 was Shakey -- This Ole House Number 2 was Bucks Fizz - Makin Your Mind Up OH DEAR !!!!!
  25. Thanks for the Small Faces info. I did get to see them in Sheffield in the late sixties at the Top Rank Suite. It was a short set but good stuff. Would have loved to see them at City Hall. Cheers
