Poll: New Heeley Mosque, what do you think?
Guest_225 replied to Guest_225's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Ruling Sikhs?? India is officially a secular democracy, but if one religion dominates it's the Hindus, not the Sikhs. -
If it was a decent car it was him, he's been spotted round Sheffield before.

I live very close to the new Ecclesall library and I don't mind the design. It's nice to have a library back too. What IS an ugly building is the new block of Swiss Chalet flats that looms up behind the new library and was built on the site of the old library, a lovely old building that was sold off by the council, went through a couple of incarnations as pubs/restaurants and was then left to rot. Supposedly it was unsafe and 'had to be demolished'. The Swiss Chalets are totally out of proportion to the site and bear no relationship to the architecture around them - ugh!

Your Issues, Opinions & Thoughts On Gypsies & Travellers In UK
Guest_225 replied to King Rat's topic in General Discussions
I had the good fortune to attend the huge Stow Gypsy Fair last May and it was a revelation. It was a nice peaceful lively good humoured event and an eye opener on the parallel hidden culture of travellers. Jeremy Clarkson attended the same event and wrote this hilarious account - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,24389-2179074,00.html -

I don't think they do the call to prayer in this country. -

There was a jokey review of the restaurant in the Sun - online at least (I wouldn't BUY it) First mention I saw though was in Popbitch where the Sun and other papers get a lot of their tips.

Errrrrr...... the Surrey one is in Brunei. It was the shanty town in the foreground that gave it away. That and the palm trees..... -

I suspect some people will object just because they are anti-muslim, but you'll find other threads on here complaining about ugly design in buildings that are totally secular in their use. That square block behind the Peace Gardens for instance. People take a strong interest in the architecture of Sheffield. The good stuff gets praised and the ugly stuff slated. -
Great cheese - Tescos range of unpasteurised French cheeses. Fabulous and slightly dangerous too! Waitrose Vacherin - soft stinky stuff wrapped in larch bark. Ray Mears would be proud. It's a seasonal cheese and available now.

You mean they're not going to stay green like other mosques in other cities? It occured to me that there must be some Mosk-U-Like company designing all these modern mosques. -

Now the new mosque is nearing completion, what do people think of it? Is it a good addition to Sheffield architecture and landscape or not? My own opinion isthat it's nasty and cheap looking. Considering the great Islamic architecture in other parts of the world this one looks so poorly designed and badly executed. -
Endcliffe Crescent - once an arcadian landscape
Guest_225 replied to Guest_225's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
It isd (was) the big round green area on this multimap photo - http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=433000&Y=386500&width=700&height=400&gride=433000&gridn=386500&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=pc&pc=&zm=1&scale=5000 Or use the postcode S10 3ED to find it on Google Earth -
I beleive it's available from some Yemeni shops, but does anyone know which one?

Now an ugly building site. I was inspired to go there for a look after reading the Pevsner architectural guide to Sheffield which says - "Endcliffe - A tour of this area should begin in Endcliffe Crescent, an arcadian landscape of villas grouped informally around a large irregular green." I had a look on Google Earth and sure enough there was a large green there, so I went for a look and found it's now being built on by the university and pretty well destroyed. The half of the green not a building site is now a car park. How did they get permission to do this? So what did it look like before, does anyone remember?

Derwent development near Kelham Mills

What's Cornish Place like as a place to live? I've wondered because it's a great old building, but it looks a bit bleak and desolate round there. -
In Romania carp is a popular dish, except they swap the R and A round. I still regret not bringing back a tin of crap.

After recent events I wonder if they're thinking of a name change? http://www.thepoloniumrestaurant.co.uk/ And seriously, I wonder if the sushi restaurant in London will ever open again?

The decline in the value of the dollar
Guest_225 replied to LordChaverly's topic in General Discussions
For those of us who get paid in US Dollars it's a continuing paycut. -
No. it's also on all items that go over £100 in the UK. I like to see if an item is being bid on fairly before bidding and that's not possible now. There's going to be a huge rise in people bidding up their own items from another account and now it's going to be near impossible to detect that. Ebay always relied on it's users to monitor and police dodgy goings on, that's not going to happen any more....
-
For me it takes away all the social aspects of eBay. I've met a few collectors with the same interests as me that have become genuine friends. Now you can't contact anyone unless you have a transaction with them. It will also have the effect of making it impossible for people who have suffered fraud to contact each other to report it to the police. The one time I was defrauded I got together with the other victims to make a collective report to the police - £50,000 fraud catches their attention much better than the £200 I was defrauded of as an individual.
