  1. You mean the one that had been closed for 8 years almost? I doubt it has any relevance to the current hotel business of Sheffield! Having worked in some Sheffield hotels you would be amazed at the 'occupancy rate' Sheffield manages to maintain. Between the Arena, Ponds Forge, Meadowhall etc there is huge demand for rooms.
  2. I suspect it will be like the Broadfield, look at the change they made there!
  3. Bang to rights. Park parallel to double yellow be it pavement, verge etc is illegal. Go to Old Trafford every week the council there must issue hundreds in the exact same spots week after week.
  4. Yes it has closed, he has retired I believe. It had been open since the 70's the dining scene of Sheffield has changed somewhat since then. I remember the 80's before we even had Mcdonalds that your choice for 'American' was Yankees or Sams. You can now get great burgers at so many places that going for a burger is no longer a thing I guess. I couldn't even list the amount of places! Shame to see it go, the poster at the bottom of the stairs amused many a teenage Sheffield boy...... http://www.popartuk.com/sport/tennis-girl-pp32602-poster.asp
  5. A colleague once said to me ( we both do 20k+ a year so see our fair share of idiot/poor driving) That you just have to imagine why they are driving like that, take out the fact it is poor driving and maybe they are racing to see a dying parent/child/grandparent etc. They may not always drive like that and are actually a reasonable person! Makes me be a little calmer !
  6. What does CAMRA have to do with it? Nothing. The campus closed in 2008, that is a pretty slow demise. Lawlessdan seems to have the most insight, clearly it wasn't making any money and the operator decided it was better closed than open. Seems to have been run by Parity bars, a quick Google suggests they have had financial issues. https://www.insidermedia.com/insider/yorkshire/lender-takes-control-after-bars-deal-sours http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/tfg-capital-backs-takeover-of-parity-bars-1-7242296 Looks like they also operated the Varsity Bars too at some point, both of course closed too. "The company currently known as Parity Bars Limited was known under the name Varsity Bars until 2014-01-24 then the name was changed. " Around there you have the Porter Cottage, The Lescar and The Stag, all do relatively well from what I know. Just up you have the POW and soon to be Miller and Carter a bit further out. Even the Banner isnt too bad, but probably a different clientele.
  7. I often eat them due to being away for work. £20 for 10oz rib, with all the sides + a fiver for a glass of wine I think is good value. Unlike many places where the meat costs £20+ and then you are charged £4.95 each for any sides! M&B must like the area, they already have the POW and the Rising Sun. Pricing is here for the Manchester site, http://www.millerandcarter.co.uk/restaurants/north-west/millerandcartermanchester/mainmenu
  8. Miller and Carter coming soon, finally.....Due to open at Parkhead, in the Toby Carvery site in April. Really solid brand, and great value. I am a fan, looking forward to it. http://www.millerandcarter.co.uk/
  9. Grosvenor Casino and Fresh Direct have arranged again to donate....The event this year is on the 14th December at Niagara sports centre...... 100kg Potatoes 50kg Carrots, 50kg sprouts 20kg of turkey and 200 Pigs in Blankets. 250 crackers to give. Unfortunately I am in London with work, but we hope everyone has a great day!
  10. Been open what 8 weeks ish? And already halving drink prices on Fridays and Saturdays. That says it was too expensive to start with. A lot of competition in that little area, they will need to do something as Sheffield has always been very price sensitive. Cant say I am a fan of the Z list 'Celebrities' they bring in either, in fact it would persuade me to go elsewhere knowing someone from Towie was there doing a guest visit.
  11. Depending on where the puncture is, depends whether it is repairable. Personally I would replace, it is the only thing that holds you to the road. Tyres are not worth 'saving' on.
  12. Looks like they will skip November, and just have Glitterball on the 16th December.
  13. As Steve Baxendale owned Niche and then opened Tank with a business partner, it would make sense that he still the operator of Niche.
  14. I don't believe Uber and Pub Co's to be that similar. Uber has introduced competition to an industry that for a long time has had little. (From a customer perspective). Enterprise has little or no benefits for the customer or owner of the business. Uber has benefits. I don't drive taxis, I don't work for Uber, but I use taxis. I like cashless, I like being able to see the driver coming, I like the rating system, and I like the free referrals of which I have had a lot. I do have a couple of cab driver friends which is where most of my discussion has come from. I find both industries interesting. But there are plenty of issues surrounding the taxi trade of which I am sure you know more than me. But the deregulation has been good for Uber clearly. What doesn't help is the issues around crime (Girls assaulted in cabs), taxis that quote £50 to go from Town to Totley when it is busy and often the general arrogance of some drivers thinking they have a right to a living by being less than honest. I have had zero issues with Uber as yet. And am now well in to 50+ 'rides'. City/Mercury as was on the other hand I have had late drivers, no show drivers, drivers who think I don't know they are going the longest route, 10 minutes on call hold pre app. Almost all businesses have loyalty schemes, and Uber has recognised their users by rewarding them, you are lucky to get a thanks when paying most of the time. My only moral issue is with their paying of corporation tax, but then I also use Amazon. You also have to assume their drivers are declaring their income for tax (i'm sure all cab drivers do this meticulously ) This does put in to 'Local' economies as they earn and spend in this country. If there was a cashless pub, that had no queues, and served drinks 20% cheaper than everywhere else, I would probably go too! We are realistically only 15 years away from fully driverless cars, at which point I am afraid the taxi trade will face a whole new plight. Like with all things it is survival of the fittest. The PubCo model is almost proven not to work, Punch sold off huge amounts of pubs, Enterprise have done the same. And they are now working on new models, like Punch's Falcon model that purely works on income to wage spend. Look at pubs like The York and The Broadfield, both failed as PubCo, but once Freehold, do very well. There are now some great pubs/bars in Sheffield, but you will find mostly they are Freehold/or managed.
  15. The stocktaking is a joke! It takes maybe 4 hours tops for a pub that size once a month. £40 an hr, nice work if you can get it. They only want to do it to make sure you aren't actually making any money behind their backs...... I looked at the other leases they have too, it seems a target of £290k is attached to almost every pub they have closed. If true they would run it themselves and have managers on 25k a year.
  16. http://www.enterpriseinns.com/run-a-pub/pubs/pages/tap-and-barrel-sheffield.aspx Rent 10k a year, Turnover 290k (allegedly)!, 7800 rates a year. No way that place takes 5k a week. If it did the margin they offer is around 50, rates and rent 350 a week. I would guess it is nearer 3k a week minus VAT, leaves 2.5k of which have is profit £1250 minus the rent and rates £900. 2 staff on minimum wage doing 40 hours = £576. Leaving £324, pay the electric of circa £50pw, water £10pw, general maintenance £25pw. Council tax on living space £25pw. Leaving £215, now if you worked only 40 hours to run it, pay yourself £5.37 to be in charge. (You wont even hit taxable income levels). £11,169 PA You can see why they are closing!
  17. I am "engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation" Hence I am professional.
  18. Rods dogs was sold, months before it closed, to new owners. And I posted in April about them no longer owing La Vaca, they have moved back to Chile. I very much doubt your rumours are true.
  19. Lola-Lo was the old Varsity opposite Cavendish, that is now opening as Bar and Beyond in the next few weeks.
  20. As Grosvenor is the biggest operator in the country, and holds the largest tournament in the UK (Goliath), why not Grosvenor on Queens rd? Schedule is on their home page. https://www.grosvenorcasinos.com/local-casinos/sheffield
  21. Taxi prices to rise.....All the more reason to use Apps like Uber. They were giving away free rides on Saturday 9pm-2am up to £10. I have added up all my free rides, I am up over £150. On top of this a £5 ride in a City Cab or £6 ride in a Black cab is only £4 on Uber. Petrol is almost at its 4/5 year low and they want more money! Cab Fare Increase agreed. 20p surcharge for hire from station 20p drops,The fare at present drops at 30p intervals, the proposed increased (agreed by committee today) will mean the fare drops at 20p intervals in future Tarrif 1 from 7am till 8pm £2.60p Tarrif 2 from 8pm till 7am £3.10p
  22. Its free. And you can bring alcohol as long as it is not in glass. Tramlines attracts circa 65,000. Half of that is 32,500. Pride attracts about 4k. Bad news.
  23. The added cost of Dev Green I heard was around an additional 15-20k. Including staging, fencing and security etc.
  24. FairFX pre load card. No worry about loss, top up from an app. 1.174 at this minute. I have been loading (Saving) for a while so did very well from 1.38 a while back! I use it for both Dollar and Euro and it is very good. https://www.fairfx.com/
