  1. We should have a minute for the poor guy that owns the 250k Rolls Royce Wraith. He must have the initials MB (think he is a local estate agent) but can't obtain MB1 so has had to settle for M 81 respaced to M8 1. MB 1 has been owned by Max Bygraves and last sold for 170k in 2002. 1 MB sold for 190k in 2015. I bought 230 JAB about 5 years ago here. When I lived in the states I paid $15 a year for "UK" and "UK James"
  2. Closed as of this weekend. Good location, plenty of footfall. Wonder if it was the actual restaurant not doing well or costs of rent etc?
  3. Got another "To Let" Greene King sign out front today..... Id be surprised if it was doing 7k a week. https://www.greenekingpubs.co.uk/node/9101/pdf 374k turnover - VAT leaves 311k. Tied on beer wine etc say you make 60%. 186k. Minus rent 38k. Now at 148k. Open 14 hours a day so 2 staff just to cover each day. Plus Kitchen 2 so a minimum of 6 F/T staff I would guess. And maybe 4/5 P/T that would be circa 90k. Leaves 58. Still got business rates, gas, electric, insurance etc. The PDF estimates 38k profit potential. Which might not be far off if you can make it do the headline take. But say you only do 5k a week and you are losing money and working for free.......
  4. A massive warm warehouse, with open entry points 12 hours + a day. Hardly a surprise, maybe you need better things to do than tell tales.
  5. And the winner of oddest post goes to........Kevin! -Not come to an entire city maybe as they are gay, wow. -There are a lot of safe places. Would I take them to Page Hall no. But the city centre, West st, Ecclesall road and surrounding all perfectly 'safe'. -PDA's are not always appropriate for straights, gay, bi, trans or other. -You could always try Dempseys as a bar which is Sheffields best gay offering. -This weekend is also Sheffield pride, maybe pop along and see for yourself how the community is here.
  6. Jackie and John Tompkins just bought it, will be open soon.
  7. I believe the membership card was something on the licence from it being a private club prior, not for restricting the customer base!
  8. Been sold to an arm of Marstons..... "THE ECCLESALL ROAD MEMBERS CLUB HAS BEEN ACQUIRED BY MARSTON’S PREMIUM BARS AND RESTAURANTS DIVISION Pointing Dog on Ecclesall Road has been acquired by the Revere Pub Company, the premium division of Marston’s. The amount of money paid for the three bars has not been announced, but we do know that current staff will be kept on during the takeover, which is set to begin in May. Marston’s has also acquired Pointing Dog’s sister bars in Bakewell and Cheadle. Despite Marston’s having more of a reputation for sticky tables and 241 meals, and the Ecclesall Road set expecting an air of exclusivity when drinking at the Pointing Dog, the Revere Pub Company says it keeps the independence of the premium bars it takes over. So don’t panic Pointing Dog patrons, you’ll probably still be needing a members’ card, so you can drink away from the riff raff!"
  9. The constructive part is I and probably most others, don't need patronsing with a list of self indulgent ridiculous 'rules'. If I am paying for something i expect to get what I have asked and paid for not a fraction of it......Any business owner that thinks his door staff are best placed to decide on a dress code/someones eligibility to come and spend in their business is either naive or stupid.
  10. Interestingly you quote 2 really well run businesses! Cubana had been around for years and built its business before moving to larger premises, and the Botanist is part of a massive buy out "KNUTSFORD based pub and restaurant operator New World Trading Company (NWTC) has been sold to private equity firm Graphite Capital in a deal reported to be £50m. With 14 outlets nationwide under five brands – The Botanist, The Oast House, Smugglers Cove, The Trading House and The Club House – NWTC was founded by the late Tim Bacon and Jeremy Roberts as part of the Living Ventures group." My money is on the 2 you mention long outlasting this.
  11. Serious assault on Saturday night. 1 critical in hospital, 1 arrested and released on bail....
  12. Well, 4. One of which is yet to open in Knutsford, a slightly different climate to West St. They wouldn't be the first business to get Sheffield wrong. Oddly it also has 50 glowing reviews on Facebook, call me skeptical. The music is no different to Maida Vale, I am not sure this can be compared to Kasbar by a million miles.
  13. Anyone else had the misfortune to visit yet?! They have obviously spent a decent amount on the refurb, but I am not sure it is tasteful. The decor is a mix of dark and brothel red. I think their house rules were written by Alan Partridge, seriously, they have not researched Sheffield at all....here are some of my favourites. - If our prices are too high feel free to take your monkey nuts elsewhere - No name dropping, no brown nosers, no free loaders - No scallywags or riff raff - Dress code, weekend rockstar, doormans discretion - Our bartenders are professionals and should be treated as such. The list goes on. These are on the back of all menus, should anyone forget. No draught beer, no cider, and £5 + bottles. Ordered Gin and tonic, ask them to use a measure if you want any actual gin in it, they free pour as they are clearly so highly trained, he stopped with gin before i counted to 2. ( I can free pour and he was miles out and under). It will undoubtedly be heading the way of Bar and Grill and Tropeiro. We had one and left, there is no reason to return. They should have let Hooters take it after all.
  14. Uber. Cheaper and better than all of them.
  15. Probably, the sign said anti social behavior.....
  16. Will be on a tied lease. I haven't bought any 'local' beer for a while but when you have pubs that can get it at £65 and you have to pay £105, you are at an automatic disadvantage.
  17. The menu has prices. http://www.millerandcarter.co.uk/restaurants/yorkshire-and-the-humber/millerandcartersheffield/mainmenu
  18. Grosvenor Casino, Queens Rd. HD projector screen, 4 50" TV's with sound. Food and drink till 5am.....
  19. There is almost no money to be made in a lease hold pub co pub unfortunately. When you competitors are buying beer for £60 and you are paying £120, you have no chance. Then if you do make it successful the pub co just up the rent. I would be surprised if many leasehold operators clear more than 25-30k a year. Thats with almost no holidays, working 6 days a week and weeks of 60-70 hours.
  20. He isn't..... http://ok2bme.ca/resources/kids-teens/what-does-lgbtq-mean/
  21. What does it matter? Unless there is a camera, average or fixed, and or speed humps nobody does 20 anyway.
  22. It is slightly odd when you look at what operates successfully within 50 yards (in some cases 10 yards!) Cavendish, Revolution, The Hop, The Forum, Common Room all been around for years and operate well, you would assume from longevity. It must be a marketing/brand issue because what they offer is not that different when it comes down to it. Be interesting to see how much longer it lasts. Only a few months left of Student money, May to September is the cities lull in terms of midweek student trade.
  23. I worked for Dominoes in my Uni years. We used to call (Using the managers phone! As people didn't all have mobiles back then). People used to rob the drivers, steal the bikes and vandalise the cars. Usually in known areas or tower blocks, it wasn't the usual thing but better safe than sorry!
  24. Posted about it in December. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1492974
