  1. Lets not forget that the steel industries in other companies were heavily subsidised meaning they could produce cheaper steel. Also countries like India can pay their workers very little and have to spend little or nothing on Health and safety meaning less production costs. Our governments are and were short sighted as shown in this government's refusal to loan Forgemasters £80 million to invest in a process which would have made much more money for the company and the country As for the unions asking for more pay and less hours many were just looking for parity with our European neighbours who typically worked a 35 hour week compared to our 40 and generally for more pay. Also countries like Germany rewarded workers for doing overtime by taxing overtime pay at a lesser rate making it worthwhile
  2. remember one of them was the bloke who used to present look north always thought it a bit odd but having said that he was decent enough
  3. thanks. We do I used to belong to the Hunter archaeological society when I lived in Sheffield. Many years ago (20+) there was an outside broadcast van parked up there with a small caravan transmitting the snooker. I used to stand and watch the snooker for a while until it got to cold or too windy or both.
  4. good question. When I used to walk the dog on Wincobank hill there was an old battered sign saying it was a sight of special interest or something. I think it was an iron age fort or something. Wonder if the signs still there (it was over 25 years ago)

  10. my grandma worked in a chip shop before and during the war. She once told me that in the war they used to make a cake which was two slices of potato with meat spam (?) in the middle then battered. Maybe that was the prototype who knows?
  11. What about Dennis Skinner he's speaks out about what he believes in and doesn't always toe the party line

  14. I'm with you geocol. If Mr plod is who i think he is i remember him as well respected by us kids and if I remember right most of us called him sir without prompting. He was a place of safety if we needed and sometimes a clip round the ear but not that often I might say. I don't remember being stopped from playing footie that often on the rec that often. Yes it migt've been noisy at times but at least our folks knew where we were

  18. I would like to know your background Buller boy because you appear to have a very low opinion of people or perhaps a high opinion of yourself. It's a sad fact of life that a lot of town centres are run down with shops opening and closing with great regularity. Doesn't make the people down and outs.
  19. Is this the same Thatcher who said 'let Liverpool decline' after 1981 riots? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16361170 Where exactly was this funding? The north was a hindrance to Thatcher and the Tories. Still is as shown by the governments decision not to loan Forge Masters £80 million Sheffield Forgemasters' £80m nuclear parts loan axed http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10341119 A loan that would have made them a front runner in the Nuclear industry and created jobs.
  20. always remember knock 3 times being played a lot
