darra replied to Chris M's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Did you know Martin? I used to hang around with him a lot. Did you know he was a chef at the Crucible as well. Didn't know he DJ'd at the Daisy though must have been after I left Sheffield. Remember him and his group playing gigs there though -

The old 'Ice Cream' Families of Sheffield
darra replied to PopT's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Remember in the very early 60's a van used to come round where we lived on Darnall road selling ice cream. He used to put chocolate sauce on top that when solid the minute it hit the ice cream. Sheer magic when your only six years old. Any body else remember going out with Mothers mixing bowl to get a load of ice cream and a hand full of wafers for Sunday tea? -
The old 'Ice Cream' Families of Sheffield

I used to live on Andover Street flats and there was a shop run by Tony Cairo which used to sell the best ice cream ever.Great shop one of the ones that used to open 25 hours a day 8 days a week. Tony was the bloke who invented the hard sell. Very rarely did you leave without buying anything even if he didn't have what you had gone in for. A legend and a genuinely nice bloke. -

From what I remember being told the company was founded in 1774 on the site of a brewery. The company was a temperance company which meant that any one found drinking alcohol on or of the premises whether working or not would be sacked immediately. The company trademark was THESSCO and yes it was owned by Charles Engehard who incidently owned the racehorse Nijinsky. It was Engelhard who eventually sold the company around 1984 which resulted in a large percentage of the workforce being made redundant,me being one of them. -

I worked there for 11 years from '73.Yes you did have to walk through a metal detector on the way out.You also had to empty out your pockets and put everything in a platic bag and put that on a conveyor belt. -
