  1. As part of a £20 million scheme of work across South Yorkshire we're refurbishing large water mains to help us continue to supply the best quality water to our customers, reduce the risk of leaks and fuel the next crop of Olympic athletes in Sheffield.

We'll be coming back to the A61 Penistone Road in Sheffield (between Saltbox Lane and Bracken Hill) to disconnect and clean water mains. Work begins next week (Aug 13) and will go on for approximately 6 weeks.

We apologise for any traffic delays, but this work is essential for customers in Sheffield.

  2. Yorkshire Water is currently well underway with a massive operation across the region to minimise the impact of the heavy rain and help those people who have suffered from flooding.

A huge amount of preparation has taken place to ensure the company and its water and waste water facilities are as ready as possible for the heavy rain, with the company liaising closely with all the other relevant authorities and emergency services to align efforts.

With up to 50mm of rain forecast in some parts of the region today, there will be no let-up in Yorkshire Water’s efforts to minimise the impact of the rain and ensure customers are receiving the help and support they require.

  3. It would be interesting to hear if any jobs are being created by the scheme, and if so what kind of jobs, and if they're recruiting from the local area.

The work will certainly have a positive impact on the local economy and we expect around 200 people will be employed throughout the course of the scheme, within various different areas of construction. A priority for us will be to ensure that local suppliers also benefit and we will be looking to source materials such as scaffolding and concrete from people local to the area. In addition, Aecom, who are based in Tankersley were tasked with designing the new works.

  4. Residents in Sheffield are being invited to learn about how they will benefit from a £78million scheme by Yorkshire Water to overhaul the city's iconic Blackburn Meadows sewage treatment works.

We're staging a drop-in event on Tuesday 20 March, at Tinsley Green Community Centre on Norborough Road where residents will have the opportunity to learn more about how the work will not only help to reduce the risk of flooding in the city, but also massively benefit the local environment, improving river water quality and boosting biodiversity.

Built in the late 1800's, the works has since grown to treat the domestic and industrial waste from an equivalent population of 830,000, which includes most of metropolitan Sheffield, as well as areas of Rotherham.

Aging equipment and treatment processes, coupled with the growing demands it is coming under, mean that the time is right for this facility to receive a huge upgrade.

Engineering specialists Earth Tech Morrison will start work from the end of March 2012 to replace much of the plant's treatment facilities, with the project expected to be complete by September 2014.

Once finished, the new improved facility will be able to treat more waste water, more efficiently, and to a higher standard, further improving the quality of treated water entering the River Don. In turn benefitting fish, other wildlife and those who use the river.

In addition improving the Don Valley pumping station and the combined sewer overflow, which are visible from the M1 viaduct, the works will be able to better cope with heavy rainfall.

Drop in dates are scheduled to be between 3.00pm and 7.00pm on Tuesday 20 March.

  5. We apologise for the delays and inconvenience this work may cause, however please be assured we are working as quickly as we can to get this work completed.

Work in the main carriageway will be carried out under two-way traffic lights which will be manned at all times to ensure traffic is able to flow as quickly as possible. You will be able to travel along the A61 Penistone Road at this time although this is likely to incur delays.

From 6 February 2012, we will start at the junction of Wheel Lane to outside 23 Penistone Road. Whilst we carry out the work on this section Salt Box Lane and Wheel Lane will be closed at the junction with the A61 for approximately 3 weeks.

Once this section is complete and Salt Box Lane and Wheel Lane are re-opened, we will then start on the next section between the junctions of School Lane and Norfolk Hill. During this time we will close School Lane from 27 February 2012 and then Norfolk Hill will be one way only (uphill) from 5 March 2012. We will also need to close the junction of Whitley Lane whilst we are on this section.

Suggested diversion routes can be downloaded from our website http://www.yorkshirewater.com/A61 and these will be well signposted while we are on site.

We apologise for the disruption this work will cause, however this essential project is necessary to ensure we continue to provide the best quality drinking water to customers in Sheffield. This £8million project is part of our £376million investment across Yorkshire between 2012 and 2013.

For more information please visit the website http://www.yorkshirewater.com/A61 or contact our site customer service team on 0844 8481096 (Monday to Friday 8am - 5.30pm).

  6. The increase in bills is largely down to inflation and means that Yorkshire Water’s customers will be paying about an extra £1.75 per month in 2012/13. The increase will help fund our ongoing investment programme and the good news is that South Yorkshire (and Sheffield in particular!) will benefit enormously from this.

For example, over the next three years we will be investing about £78 million at Blackburn Meadows Waste Water Treatment Works opposite Meadowhall that will deliver significant improvements to the quality of the River Don. We’re working in partnership with the Environment Agency, the Sheffield-based River Stewardship Company and the Don Catchment Rivers Trust.

We’re also investing tens of millions at other waste water treatment works like Woodhouse Mill at Rotherham and Old Whittington in Chesterfield.

On top of that we’re currently £14 million to improve Rivelin Water Treatment Works, where new treatment processes are being installed to protect customers’ drinking water supplies. This will benefit more than 100,000 homes.

Whilst we appreciate that this is coming at a difficult time for many people this increase will help us deliver significant benefits for the local environment.

If you have genuine concerns about how you might be able to afford the increase we may be able to assist you.

  7. We supply Sheffield with great tasting, top quality water. But to keep it that way we need to keep investing in upgrading and replacing our pipework.

On 6th February, we're starting an £8 million investment to refurbish and repair some of our water mains in Sheffield to ensure customers continue to get great tasting, top quality water.

This essential work will lead to the closure of some local roads and traffic delays on the A61 Penistone Road in and out of Sheffield (near Hillsborough football ground). Some customers may have to take alternatives routes for their journeys to work or school.

Further information on how this work may affect you can be found on our website http://www.yorkshirewater.com/A61

  8. It's already renowned as one of South Yorkshire's most beautiful locations, but Yorkshire Water's Langsett reservoir site, between Sheffield and Barnsley, is taking on an increasingly festive look thanks to some anonymous festive helpers.

For it seems that one of the site's pine trees has been singled out for special festive honours this year, with the tree bearing more and more Xmas decorations every day - a Christmas miracle for site warden Gordon Danks, particularly as he has no idea who or what is putting them there.

  9. Last week the Government published its 'Water White Paper' that outlined how the water industry will need to operate in years to come.

We were really pleased that the Government included in the document our proposal to introduce social tariffs to ensure that everyone in the UK has access to an affordable water supply.

At Yorkshire Water we are 100% committed to helping our customers and currently have a number of options for customers who are genuinely struggling to pay their bills which were highlighted within the 'White Paper' as industry best practice.

For more information on these as well as the additional added value services we provide, please visit our Public Affairs blog

  10. Schools in South Yorkshire are being encouraged to take up the offer of a free educational school trip to Yorkshire Water's water treatment works near Sheffield.

The interactive educational centre provides pupils aged between nine and 11 with an insight into the journey of water from source to tap - linking in with the national curriculum subject of water.

Pupils are taken on tour of the water treatment works by trained education guides to see how the water coming in from the reservoirs in the area is treated and then sent out to taps all across the Sheffield area.

Spaces for FREE education session for the next few terms are booking up fast so any schools wishing to register should visit http://www.yorkshirewater.com/educationcentres or call the education team on 01274 692548.

  11. A project which will significantly reduce the risk of internal and external flooding in a notoriously flood-prone area of Chesterfield will go on public display later this month as Yorkshire Water consults customers over the company's planned work to significantly upgrade parts of its sewerage network in the town.

  12. Every year, we take tens of thousands of clean water samples from across the region. Earlier this year, we started a programme of work to replace lead clean water communication pipes where levels of lead are above the new requirements, which will be applied from April 2013. We're only responsible for the section of pipe from the road up to the boundary of customers homes, so where we find lead supplies, we always tell customers and provide them with the contact details of a contractor in case they wish to replace their section.

We're investing £18million in Leeds replacing lead supply pipes as investigations have identified this as an area with a high number of lead pipes.

  14. Winter 2010 was one of the most severe we've seen for many years, with thousands of customers left with frozen pipes and no water. As part of our winter campaign we're giving advice on how to protect pipes and properties during a cold spell, but we'd also like your help. What did you do last winter to protect your home from the frost? Perhaps you knitted some insulation for your pipes or just popped round to check on your neighbour's house over Christmas - either way please share your tips with us and help millions of others across Yorkshire get ready for winter!

  15. The blend of water that our customers are being supplied with in some areas of Sheffield has changed. The proportion of soft moorland water has decreased and has been replaced with river derived water which tends to be harder. The water blend might vary at different times of the day and from day to day.

As a result you may notice that your kettle develops a slight build up of scale. This is due to increased levels of naturally occurring calcium bicarbonate. You may also notice a difference in taste although this is not harmful in any way.

This blending of water is a routine procedure which takes place for operational reasons in order to balance water stocks in the region.

More information on water hardness is available in the water quality section of our website - http://www.yorkshirewater.com/waterquality

  16. We've education centres across the region at fully operational sites where children can learn about the water cycle, the environment and how we ensure Yorkshire has a constant supply of fresh drinking water.

Our education centres at Headingley, Esholt and Ewden have been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge.

  17. We'd like to thank all the people who came to see us on Saturday, the event was really successful.

We have noticed a couple of comments from people regarding leaks - we take leakage very seriously & are currently investing £33 million throughout the region to help tackle this. The investment will see us take steps to improve the robustness of our pipe network and help reduce leakage.

  18. Over the next five years, we'll be investing £3.5 billion into Yorkshire to support a huge capital programme, over 1,000 local businesses and many thousands of local jobs. For every £1 we spend we'll generate almost double this in terms of economic activity in Yorkshire. Read on to find out what this means for South Yorkshire...
