Connie Grant also had a place on Psalter Lane before she moved to West Street. If I remember rightly her formation team appeared quite a few times on Come Dancing.

I used to live on Hobart st in the 50's and I remember there was a bakers or some such on the corner of Langdon Street and when it was cold, but too early to go home we used to stand with our backs to the wall where the ovens were and keep warm. The Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough used to live on Langdon St. I moved onto my own house on Fentonville St in '66 and worked behind the bar in the new Cross Guns. It was a great place to live then, sadly now, not so much. I moved to North Anston in the 70's as the Housing Associations were moving in problem families and it had started going downhill.

Well said Tzijlstra. Takes somebody not born here to remind those who were what a great place Sheffield is. I'm a Sheffielder born and bred and proud of it. As you said Brilliant access to city AND countryside all within half an hour. Come on Sheffielders, where's your pride?

Hi echo beach It is indeed a small world. When I lived on Fentonville St my back gate opened on to Croydon St. There was a couple who lived opposite who also moved to Coal Aston in the early 70's. They had twin boys who would have been about 10 at the time. After my dad died in 1969 my mother carried on living in Hobart St until the early 70's, when she moved to the Herdings. Not sure of the exact date she left.

Hi echo beach ( if you're still around) Not been on here for quite a while so don't know if you still read this. I lived at 21 Hobart st. Moved there in 1957 and lived there until I left home aroung 1962Our house was about halfway down. There was a family called DaBell who lived at 19 and somebody called Wade who lived down the bottom on the other side. Ian was the sons name. I remember Tony's fish and chip shop. He was Polish and did great fish and chips. There was a hairdressers round the corner on Clubgarden Road. Mollie ran it. I finished up living on Fentonville st in the late 60's and early 70's and worked behind the bar in the Cross Guns.

Hi Grinder The correct word is obstreporous but I like the Sheffieldism best. It means awkward as in a right okerd little beggar. This is the first time I've heard it in years. I also wer called it a lot as a kid.

Hi sandraroger. I used to be best mates with Ann Coggin. She used to live on Sharrow Lane with her Mom when we were at school. Don't know about Margery Staniforth but as far as I can remember Ann married and lived up Millhouses. Don't know what he did but he drove a Rolls. My name was Janet Whiting.

Hi Vera I remember going to the dance, I think it was on a Monday either just before or just after we left school which would be '59 ish. Can't remember the chap's name who ran it though. The memory lapses get longer and longer.

Hi Jack Thanks for that. You're probably right about there being two families. I don't remember Roger Kay but I certainly remember Pamela Clarke and Jean Hancock. Unleass I'm totally mistaken, Jean was a tiny little thing. Tony might not have been called Marsh. Two or three of the kids had different fathers I think. Regards

Hi Jack Yes, Christine definitely lived across from the Vine when I knocked about with her. They could have moved later. A girl named Kath Fowler (who we also knocked about with for a time) lived somewhere near Pickerings but I can,t remember the name of the road. I remember Steve's name from the Marsh clan and I think Chris had a brother called Tony who was a year younger than her but, Tempis Fugit and the memory fades as to the names of the rest of them. Hi Roger Janet Whiting, as was, here. Now Jan Beresford. Finally, somebody from school whose name I recognise. I'd almost given up. Not a sign of anybody in ages and then two come along at once (bit like buses I suppose). I heard from Vera Parker nee Hardwick last week and now you. There's someone called Jack Hewitt and someone called Hetty on the Forum and they certainly seem to know a lot of names from the year I was in, but I don't recognise their names. Perhaps you do, although I think you must have been in the year above me if you left in '58. I left Christmas '59 The David Whiting you mentioned was, or is my cousin and he had or has a sister named Carol. Their dad was my dad's brother and he kept the Vine at the end of Hodgson Street. One of my mates was Christine Marsh and she lived in the end house across from the Vine. She had about 7 brothers and sisters. One of my best mates from school was Judy Milner and she is Vera's cousin. It would be nice to keep in touch. Regards JanB

Hi scousemouse I know what you mean about Hornsey being fond of the cane. She was also very fond of laying it across my fingers. As you can probably imagine, I couldn't stand the woman. I left at Christmas 1959 (what a long time ago) and Aizlewood never gave me my leaving certificate, inspiring or otherwise. Knowing him though I don't suppose I missed much. Like you, I've done ok for myself

Mr Wragg also taught at Pomona St. He took J4, which was the scholarship class back then. He used to give us tests every week to get us ready for taking the 11+. We had to move desks every week according to how we'd done. He became the maths teacher once we'd moved to Greystones. He was a great teacher and a nice man to boot.

Hi Jack. Long time no post. No, I wasn't a member of either gang as most of my life at that time was taken up with dancing classes. My parents were strict and wanted to know where I was every minute so if I wasn't dancing I was at home. Your opinion of Knutty seems to be shared by a lot of people on the Forum. I only saw him once after I left school and that was at Sherbert Plus and he was with his wife. I do remember in my much much much younger days at school he once asked me to go out with him but I said no as he was smaller than me and a year below me. Not so cool in those days. Hi mickowl91 Can't place the one on Surrey Street (it's a long time ago). There was also one on London Road just above the Disc Jockey. It was taken over by a German woman late '59 turned it into a coffee bar and called it The Continental.

Hi old tup Lin Hongs was called the Golden Tiger when I used to go in the 1970's. Used to get a good meal in there.There was also the Silver Palace at the bottom of London Road next to the Hermitage. First one I ever went in was The Rickshaw in 1959. Had their special and it was all laid out on a bed of fried lettuce. I thought it was really strange but it was good. Also used to go in the Golden Dragon up the side from Woolworths and the Canary on Charles Street.

Hi Plain Talker I lived on Hobart Street in the late fifties and had an auntie who lived on Mount Pleasant Road. Also remember the Golden Tiger Chinese. Had many a Sunday lunch in there. Loved their Special Chop Suey and Chicken Maryland (you don't see that dish anymore).

You lucky people, not having to go through your whole time with 'Old Mac' as a teacher. She was the most hated teacher in the school by my year. She was originally at Pomona Street. We thought we might lose her when we all went to Greystones, but no such luck.
