  1. There are two or three empty arches at the canal basin. They wouldn't hold enough people to make a viable entertainment business and don't curently have running water or gas. They can be leased from The Canal and River Trust - which is a charity with limited resources. A few people are looking at taking on Arches 18/19. The Canal and River Trust have plans to turn one or two of the arches into toilet facilities, but I guess the funding for that comes second to canal repair and maintenance. They are currently replacing the lighting and the windows on all of the arches. The canal basin has very little to do with Sheffield Council. Leeds canal goes through the city and onwards. Sheffield's is a dead end. The people building the canal should have thought about 21st century entertainment quarters and carried on to Kelham Island.
  2. Hello all. The Dorothy Pax has been opening on temporary licenses and is still waiting for full licensing. If you check out the Facebook page there are some gigs coming up before Christmas and the ihope is that it will soon be fully open, with food available.

  4. I went there a week ago for a meal. I haven't been for ages. The waiting staff couldn't have been nicer. The food and wine were very good. I would recommend giving it a go. I loved it.
  5. Please note that if you want to come - it is bookings only. You can PM me for this.
  6. Thanks. Points noted. Nowhere is always perfect or to everyone's taste. Sorry you didn't like the quality of the food. It wasn't my restaurant (I am Nicky's friend) but the prices had to provide a wage to the cook and also take into account the overheads of running a restaurant. As it says in the Star article it was difficult to fill the restaurant during the week. This was hopefully the best idea to bring Kumquat Mae back. The event is priced at £14.50 for three courses and the pub is lovely.
  7. Kumquat Mae is in the Star today. Thanks for your comments - PM me if you are interested in hearing more (or join the FB group). http://www.thestar.co.uk/food/Kumquat-comeback-gets-big-boost.6157833.jp?CommentPage=1&CommentPageLength=10
  8. The restaurant closed nearly two years ago now. So it's not so much a change - it's a rest. But they do say a change is as good as a rest.
  9. It's one-off events at different venues for customers who miss the place - there seems to be lots on the Forum. Nothing to fear for other restaurants. Please join the Facebook group and let others who may be interested know.

  15. Saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - 7/10. The special effects and story were really brilliant but it was spoilt slightly by being nearly three hours long. It was a bit too long.
  16. Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist 6/10 Frost / Nixon 8/10 Milk 9/10
  17. Finally got to see Roisin Murphy at the Manchester Academy last Friday. She was amazing.
  18. We went out on a Friday. We only really go out on the scene once in a while in Sheffield nowadays. We all thought everyone must be saving their money. It was just bad luck and bad, bad, bad customer service / attitude / mis-understanding from a certain bar. Shan't be bothering to go back there even if they have Madonna playing live on Xmas Eve whilst giving out free Rolex's...... It really annoyed me (obviously). Won't ever beg to spend my money in a bar. They won't miss me and I won't miss them I suppose. It is up to them who they have in their bar and how they treat people. We ended up meeting friends in straight bars, having a wicked time and trying the lions lair later.... Just wanted to post that for people who don't go out all the time it is quite difficult to fall on a busy lively good night with no hassle on the gay scene sometimes..... I'm glad there are so many places to try and I know that misunderstandings happen in all bars between staff and customers but what a waste of money and effort! I am only glad I hadn't dragged more friends with me. The reason we are going to Manchester is because you KNOW it will be busy with a good atmosphere. I will go out in Sheffield again and don't want to dis or upset you people who work hard to make it good but I am being realistic.
  19. It was Friday night. Maybe 1 or 2 weeks ago. It was around 9pm?? and 1am we tried the Lion's Lair. The first time it was dead and the second time closed. Think we just fell unlucky and didn't realise you close until 3am???. I can't wait to go to one of these after parties nights..... will keep checking dannybreeze's page for info etc... We didn't want to walk to Dempseys as friends seemed to be having a good time in a (shock horror!) straight bar....! lol.
  20. My second foray onto the Sheffield gay scene with 3 friends recently was an utter disaster. Lions Lair was dead (it was quite early to be fair), Affinity was dead and tried Sanctuary. It looked so nice inside. But yes, it was dead.... I suppose it was nowhere near pay day for most people...... Then my friend tripped on the stairs going out of Sanctuary for a cig. Got told he was drunk (if only!) & wasn't allowed in again.... The staff wouldn't ever have noticed if there had been more than 10 people in there. Went to go back to the Lions Lair and it was closed...... So spent the night walking around looking for a busy bar and getting unnecessary hassle from over zealous staff....... Realised we could have spent a few quid more and been on Canal Street.... See you there Friday if you are going....
  21. Go to http://www.moneysavingexpert.com There are lots of money off vouchers for restaurants such as Ask, Pizza Express and Cafe Rouge.
  22. How infuriating. I think these people need to wake up. Maybe you would be better off asking for their manager. At the end of the day it is a customer service job. You are their customer. Their manager might be more experienced and knowledgable about re-training etc. Funnily enough there are some job centre vacancies in Sheffield advertised on the DWP website. You could be the change from within....
  23. It might not be all that bad. There are four years until 2012. It's possible alot of the job losses will come from people leaving and not being replaced or voluntary redundancies even....
