  1. I was born in 1957 and in the late sixties we used to bike or walk for miles, sometimes we would be away all day, and nobody was worried about us, we used to go sledging on a hilly golf course near us, and yes we ate everything that is bad for you these days, we were poorer than the neighbours and didnt have a car, in all my school days I was never dropped off at school and trudged in all weathers, arriving at school soaking wet, but we didnt seem to get ill, we had those bouncy moon hoppers, pogo sticks, and the dolls were, Cindy & Patch, I remember you would buy stereo or mono records, as stereo had just come out, we got our first record player with seperate speakers, and we would gather around to hear the sounds coming from the different speakers,
  2. I worked every Saturday, and most holidays, in the indoor market in Sheffield, between 1972-74, I worked on a menswear stall, there were jeans, trousers coats etc, and in those days people has different inside leg measurements for the trousers and I used to get dirty comments about me holding the tape measure, I only held the bottom they were welcome to hold the top. There was a lot of memories in those 2 years, once or twice we got evacuated with bomb scares
  3. Did Raif Caldicott have a wife that also taught skating
  4. I started going there in about 1968, went for lessons every saturday morning, before the rink opened to the public in the morning. they were the group lessons, you progressed through each step and got a certificate, then could go on to the dancing, waltz, foxtrot etc, I still have the certificates even though it was all those years ago. Used to like the music, there used to be a DJ sometimes, Sometime during the sat morning session, the music would change and the dancers would go round, then everyone back on the rink again, dont know if anyone remembers that, I was about 11 years old, went for a few years. Those skates they hired out were awful, I had some of my own for my birthday.
  5. I remember as a kid, biking from Wincobank to Keppels column, we also used to go down to Woolley Woods, and I too remember all the bluebells and bracken, is the woods still there, if so, is it safe these days for kids to play in. I never went up the column, but went to Wentworth also on the bikes, it was like an adventure, as there was still countryside in late 60's, we used to sledge down Concord Park also, a bit off the subject.
  6. I live in Auckland, New Zealand, been here since 1974, and have hardly met anyone from Sheffield, plenty others from Liverpool, Manchester etc. and heaps from Coventry and round those parts, they must all be in Oz. Cycleracer, you are correct, I was 16 when I came here, and love it when can find English sweets etc, just memories of the past, but dont think I could cope with the cold weather and snow again thats why we live in Auckland Been to Australia and my husbands family is in Perth and Newman
  7. I am looking for Lorraine Hunt, we were together at Hinde House School, until we left in 1974, she was living on Newman Drive in Wincobank at the time. I came to live in New Zealand and we lost contact. Her older brothers were David and Steven Hunt, and she married a Steve Green, who also went to Hinde House School but was a few years older. Her Father was Terry Hunt, and her mothers name has slipped my mind. She later went to live in Dore, and I have not heard since. Any information would be appreciated Nadine
  8. I remember the ice cream man coming up the street in the van, and taking a mug to the van for him to fill with ice cream and lots of rasberry sauce poured on the top, then would take it home and eat it. We used to long for a Mr Whippy also, before the days of the soft serve ice cream from Mc Donalds etc. Although I have to say you cant beat a caramel sunday. I remember traffic lights also, with the three colours of ice.
  9. I have just had a look at the website too, Liked the article on the Yorkshire Terrier, I have one, and believe me, they may look like a lap dog, but in every way they have a Yorkshire personality. Feisty, and likes to be boss,
  10. Cycleracer That's a bit of a contrast in holidays from Butlins to cruising the canary's!!!! I know which one I would prefer, although I suppose they are similiar in the fact you are in a place with organised entertainment and babysitting etc, wirh the same bunch of people, but would be more glamorous, and the views much different.
  11. PT, you are very knowledgable on this slang thing I still use siling down, teamin down, and here in NZ they couldnt understand me, as for gormless that is a great word. What about pikelets, and crumpets, the white things with the holes in the top that you toast and butter, They are crumpets here, I called them pikelets, but pikelets here are a flat brown thing made of batter, Crisps are in a bag, but are chips here and the things from the chippie are "hot chips". As for pronouncing things, here scones are pronounced scons, and yogurt is pronounced yo-gurt, as in yoyo. Rugby is football and football is soccer, I tell you, There is now a kiwi dictionary, does anyone know if there is a Yorkshire dictionary.
  12. People call babys bonny meaning "nice looking, healthy and I have also heard it to mean chubby also, Someone called my Grandson who is 5 months old bonny the other day, and he is a bit chubby, but also a cute looking healthy baby, so I took it as all of those meanings. Chip Oyl, is one I remember very well
  13. Timo I will try and counsel him, in marriage we all have our crosses to bear. Dont forget he is a kiwi, not English like me, so that could explain things. I wonder what Cliff thought of Hinde House then. Do you remember that Gary Glitter had a road manager in Brightside, that was about the closest I ever came to celebrity.
  14. Timo, dont forget that crazy horses thing he did with his knees, flapping them back and forth. I think it was the bachelor boys days he remembers from his youth. I laugh at him, and wait for it "He likes country music", I am trying to educate him over the years. By the way have tracked down my sister now, she saw my posting on this site. My old man is a bit old fashioned me thinks!!
  15. Timo I have to say my husband quite likes Cliff Richard, and we have a bit of a joke about it, because he is too good to be true, and I am not a big fan. Do you remember his white suits and he danced with his thumbs sticking up, if you know how I mean.
